Sunday in Storrs, CT was kind of a dreary day -- sort of rainy and not all that warm. We've had some absolutely spectacular weather this summer, though, so no one can complain too much. We tried to keep the music on the "sunny side," so I hope you were able to hear something you enjoyed...
Jimmy Martin, the self-appointed "King Of Bluegrass" and a very colorful character in the world of Bluegrass, would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on August 10th. Jimmy Martin's music continues to be recorded today -- for instance, Josh Williams has a version of "The Last Song" that is currently climbing up the National Bluegrass Survey -- so we paid tribute to Jimmy with about a half-dozen tunes by or about him. Clearly, many folks in the area are still great fans of Jimmy Martin and his music, as we heard stories from a couple of local musicians about times when Jimmy played show dates at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT, or at a BG festival in Maine. Three musicians who are alumni of Jimmy's Sunny Mountain Boys -- J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson, & Paul Williams -- have recently released a recording of several Jimmy Martin gospel tunes called, "Old Friends Get Together." This is a GREAT recording, and we had a copy to give away to one lucky caller. Well, we could have easily given away a dozen copies to folks who called wanting that CD. Even five years after the death of Jimmy Martin, it's great to know that folks are still enjoying his music.
We tried to shine a bit of a spotlight on some fine Bluegrass musicians from New England. There are certainly plenty of them, so we shared some music, new and not-so-new, from the likes of White Mountain Bluegrass, Southern Rail, the Bear Bridge Band, Stonewall Bluegrass, Bear Minimum, the Old Time Bluegrass Singers, Acoustic Blue, Fred Pike, Sam Tidwell & the Kennebec Valley Boys, the Pike Family & the Pine Hill Ranchers, and Bob & Grace French.
And we still had time to squeeze in new music from projects by Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford, Marty Marrone & Tangled Roots, Sidetrack, and Maro Kawabata.
Jim (and maybe even Marti) will join you on the air this coming Sunday for lots of great music -- do join them, won't you?
Have a great week -
