"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/4/2022

As it always seems in the month of December, you blink and notice that a few days have passed.  :)  I am incredibly tardy in posting our Bluegrass Cafe playlist from the first Sunday of December, and we stayed home for a "Snow Day" this past Sunday, but still...it's high time to share the playlist from our December 4th radio show...if I can remember back that far...

It looks like our Letter of the Day for the December 4th show was "D."  To that end, we shared music from several "D" performers, including David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, Hazel Dickens, Bob Dick, Dailey & Vincent, Jerry Douglas, Dry Branch Fire Squad, John Duffey, and the Dillards, just to name a few.  We also put two "D" brothers in the spotlight for a couple of reasons:  December happens to be the month of each of their birth anniversaries, and also, while these brothers did not sing "Bluegrass music" (they performed even before Bluegrass was "invented!"), there is no doubt that the music and harmonies of the Delmore Brothers (Alton & Rabon) have influenced and inspired many performers in the Bluegrass world.  We included ten Delmore Brothers songs, performed both by the brothers and by a bunch of other fine folks, including the Traditional Grass, the Louvin Brothers, David Peterson & 1946, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and the Feinberg Brothers, among others.

We shared music from a few other December birthday celebrants, too, including Bobby Osborne, Chris Jones, Jack Cooke, Jim Eanes, and Chris Hillman.

Barring any other storm activity (and assuming we can get into the Student Union during the UConn Winter Break), I hope to join you on the WHUS airwaves this coming Sunday afternoon -- December 18th -- from 4-7PM.

Until then, enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist -- 11/27/2022

Our last Bluegrass Cafe for the month of November followed Thanksgiving.  To go along with the holiday, I was feeling both GLAD and GRATEFUL to be back on the radio after a week's absence.  As I didn't have a particular plan for how the show should go, I ended up spotlighting many Bluegrass performers with a last name or band name that begins with the letter "G."  To that end, we heard from performers as varied as Jimmy Gaudreau, Richard Greene, the Gibson Brothers, the Good Ol' Persons, Josh Graves, the Grascals, Pete Goble, and others.  We also included New England "G" bands such as Grass Routes, Gopher Broke, and Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters.

Thanksgiving's passing means the arrival of Christmas music.  We shared a few  selections from several new Christmas recordings, including new full albums from Becky Buller and Williamson Branch, and Christmas singles from Authentic Unlimited, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and Rick Lang.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We'll look for you once again this coming Sunday, 4-7PM.

See you then!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/13/2022

At last, here's the playlist from Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  Our show on this Sunday had no particular "theme," so we started out with an hour's worth of songs recorded by performers with a band name or last name that began with the letter "N."  Why N?  Why not?  :)  Actually, "N" was chosen in honor of the month of November.  To that end, we heard from performers as varied as the Kody Norris Show, Northern Lights, Mark Newton, Nu-Blu, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and Alecia Nugent, as well as New England favorites, the Neon Valley Boys and Northernbound.

For something slightly different, we also cast a bit of spotlight on four albums I brought along from home:  "The Early Days Of Bluegrass, Volume 10" by Connie & Babe (Rounder), "Modern Sounds Of Bluegrass Music" by the Osborne Brothers (Decca), "Play It Like It Is" by the Country Gentlemen (Rebel), and "We'll Still Sing On" by the Johnson Mountain Boys (Rounder).  Three songs from each LP were shared during the show.

This Sunday -- tomorrow, November 20th -- I will not be in the studio to share a live version of the Bluegrass Cafe.  The lose plan is to have a re-airing of our Bluegrass Cafe which originally aired on November 21, 2021.  I plan to be back in the studio for a live presentation of our program one week from tomorrow -- Sunday, November 27th.

Hope you and yours have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/6/2022

Before the week completely gets away from me, here's a look back at Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe!

We had no particular theme for this show, although we did include a couple of "leftover" ghostly tales from the previous week's mostly-Halloween show.  We also had a little bit of newer music to share from the likes of Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Theo & Brenna, the Lost & Found, Tina Adair, Steven Moore, Nick Chandler & Delivered, and the Gibson Brothers.

In addition, we celebrated the November 6th birthday of the great
Junior Sisk, and belatedly celebrated the 85th birthday of Grand Ole Opry legend and Country Music Hall of Famer, Bill Anderson (born November 1, 1937).  Ol' Whisperin' Bill is still a very prolific songwriter, and our tribute to him included several Bluegrass covers of a few of his songs, as well as the man himself singing a classic on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.

Hope you've had a fine week, so far, and we'll see you on the radio again this coming Sunday, 4-7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/30/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was the last one to air before Halloween, and as you might expect, our playlist was dominated by tunes about ghostly trains, mysterious lights, empty coffins, and, of course, little ghost girls looking for a ride home.  Hope these songs served to create a proper "mood" for our October 30th show.

It's been just over a year since the Bluegrass world lost a true legend:  Roland "Sonny" Osborne (October 29, 1937 - October 24, 2021).  We remembered this Hall of Famer with a few songs from the innovative Osborne Brothers, as well as some songs from the Osborne Brothers' song catalog which have been covered by others.

And there was a smattering of newer music, too, from the likes of Nick Chandler & Delivered, the Foreign Landers, the Gibson Brothers, Anthony Howell, Sister Sadie, Appalachian Road Show, the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, and the Gospel Plowboys.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween.  We'll be looking forward to seeing you once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

See you then!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/23/2022

Though it took me forever to post last Sunday's playlist for our Bluegrass Cafe, this week's list will be posted much quicker.  :)  During Sunday's show, we remembered "Everybody's Grandpa," Lewis Marshall ("Grandpa") Jones with several songs both performed by and written by him.  Though this Country Music Hall of Famer was born in Kentucky and played a banjo, he certainly isn't considered a "Bluegrass performer," but he definitely is "Bluegrass-friendly."

There was a bit of newer music in this week's program, as well, with selections from a forthcoming recording by Billy Strings (with his father, Terry Barber), as well as recent releases from Darren Beachley, the Tim Raybon Band, the Kody Norris Show, and Seth Mulder & Midnight Run.

Hope you have a fine week.  We'll be looking for you next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/16/2022

Here it is, October 23rd, and I still haven't posted our playlist from the Bluegrass Cafe of last Sunday, October 16th!  Sheesh.

Earlene Pike (10/15/1953 - 8/11/1972)
Our highlight from the show on the 16th was sharing some music from the late
Earlene Pike (October 15, 1953 - August 11, 1972).  Though this native of Sterling, CT left this world very young, her music will always be remembered and shared on our Bluegrass Cafe program.  Thanks to her brother, Gordon Pike, for keeping the Pike legacy of fine music going.

The rest of the playlist included songs for October birthday celebrants, as well as newer music from the Kody Norris Show, Chris Davis, Larry Cordle, Junior Sisk, and the Appalachian Road Show.

Check out a new edition of our program this afternoon from 4-7PM.  We'll see you then!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/9/2022

As you might expect, the Coal Miner's Daughter, Loretta Lynn, figured prominently into our programming during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  Though Loretta was a Kentucky girl and was an admirer of Bill Monroe, her songs were so uniquely suited to her that there aren't so many covers of her material in the Bluegrass world.  Still, we found a dozen Loretta Lynn tunes to play in her honor, both Bluegrass covers of her songs and from Loretta, herself.  She was an original, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and her loss will be felt forever.  Still, how fortunate we are to have been able to enjoy her music and her talents for as long as we did.

We also remembered several folks with early- to mid-October birthdays, including Jason Barie, Barry Berrier, Josh Crowe, Kent Dowell, Leigh Gibson, and John Lennon.  And there was a bit of newer or recent music from several folks, including a brand-new song from Sister Sadie, as well as recent releases from Appalachian Road Show, Junior Sisk, Rock Hearts, Rick Lang (with Becky Buller), Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, and the Little Roy & Lizzy Show.

Hope you were able to join us for Sunday's show, but if not, you've got another chance coming up this weekend.  We'll see you Sunday from 4-7PM.

See you then!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/2/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our first for the month of October, and the first show as we begin our 41st year of broadcasting Bluegrass music at WHUS.

For this edition of the program, we belatedly celebrated the September 26th birthday of a Country Music legend, Marty Robbins.  We included several Bluegrass covers of Marty Robbins classics -- some songs he wrote and some he did not.

We also celebrated several Bluegrass birthdays from early October, including those of Chubby Wise, Terry Baucom, Blake Williams, Ray Deaton, Sammy Shelor, Johnny Williams, and Lynn Morris.

And we couldn't forget what would have been the 76th birthday of the late Robert Fraker -- a good friend and wonderful musician and songwriter who was one of the founding members of the Bear Bridge Band.  Though he has been gone for 5 years now, Robert's music lives forever.  We included music from Bear Bridge, as well as a couple of recorded versions of Robert Fraker songs.

We couldn't forget that the IBMA Awards ceremony was held on Thursday, September 28th in Raleigh.  We shared music from a few of the winners, including selections from Molly Tuttle, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Del McCoury, Rick Faris, and Dolly Parton.

Thanks for listening, and we'll be looking for you this Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.
