"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/25/2018

Ralph Stanley
(February 25, 1927 - June 23, 2016)
For Sunday's edition of Bluegrass Cafe, we shared lots of music from performers heard at last week's delightful Joe Val Bluegrass Festival (as always, presented by the Boston Bluegrass Union), some new music, selections from a few different LPs, and a whole lot of music from Ralph Stanley, who was born on February 25, 1927.

Among the new selections for this week were two songs we had not previously played from Becky Buller's "Crepe Paper Heart" recording (which was released on February 14th), a single from a forthcoming project by Massachusetts-born Michelle Canning, and both "sides" of a new CD single from Terry Baucom's Dukes of Drive, who performed last week at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival.

For something different, I brought a few LPs from the home library, and enjoyed playing them.  Older LP music included tunes from the Good Ol' Persons, Tim O'Brien, Appalachian Express, and three songs from a record from 1967 on Zap Records by the Country Gentlemen:  "Live From The Stage Of The Roanoke Bluegrass Festival."

Thanks again to our friend, Jim Beaver, for sitting in for last Sunday's radio show.  We'll look forward to being with you again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

Playlist - 2/18/2018

Hi Folks.

If you were at home instead of the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, perhaps you were surprised to tune in to Bluegrass Cafe (an hour later than usual because of sports) and hear a voice from the past.  Indeed, former BG Cafe DJ Jim Beaver (that's me) moved to Mount Airy, North Carolina several months back, but happened to be in town working on selling the old house and was available to step up to the microphone while Amy and Cathy were at Joe Val.

Since my record collection is in Mount Airy now, the bulk of the music I played was limited to record acquisitions I've made in the weeks I've been in Connecticut working on the old house, plus whatever was in the studio. If you noticed the classic and obscure bluegrass music, that is the reason.  That, plus I like it.

Of note was the performance by David Davis and the Warrior River Boys Live at Country Corner Coffee House in South Hadley, Massachusetts from March 19, 1994 now available on CD from David Davis himself.

Also there was quite a bit of vinyl on LP and 45 singles including recordings from Bill Berry and Paul Chaney: Jim McCall & Bennie Birchfield, Albert Parsley & Landon Messer; Dub Crouch and Norman Ford; Hack Johnson with Allen Shelton; Bill Box, and The Pinnacle Boys.

The playlist is below.

Be sure to tune in next Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/11/2018

Joe Val -- more than just a great Bluegrass festival
We are one week away from a very important event in the world of New England Bluegrass:  the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival.  To that end, Sunday's show celebrated Joe Val with an interview Cathy Day conducted with Ira Gitlin about the Joe Val Kids' Academy, musical selections from a whole bunch of Joe Val performers for 2018, and several songs from Joe Val, himself.  We even gave away two Friday passes to JV, courtesy of the fine folks at the Boston Bluegrass Union.  It should be a great festival ~ to learn more about it, click here.

While there wasn't a ton of new music on Sunday's show, there was some.  We included selections from recent recordings by Remington Ryde, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, Shannon Slaughter, Jerry Wicentowski, and a song from the forthcoming new project by Sideline.

My plan is to stay for Sunday's Joe Val festivities next week (for the first time in several years!), so the plan is for our old friend, Jim Beaver, to join you on the WHUS airwaves next Sunday afternoon.  Should be fun!

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/4/2018

Wilma Lee Cooper
(February 7, 1921 -
September 13, 2011)
Football, schmootball!  Our goal for today's Bluegrass Cafe was to play LOTS of fine Bluegrass -- everything from brand-new music from brand-new bands to classic songs from classic performers.  Think we might have attained that goal, and sure hope you agree!

The classic performers in the list below are sort of obvious (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, the Stanley Brothers, a whole bunch of Mac Wiseman, just to name a few).  In addition, there was a single from a forthcoming recording by a new group called the Highland Travelers, a new song from Becky Buller's "Crepe Paper Heart" recording (to be released on Valentine's Day), and recent music from Kristy Cox, the Wilson Banjo Co., Volume Five, the Steep Canyon Rangers.  We also remembered the birthday of Wilma Lee Cooper (born February 7, 1921) with three songs from these mountain music legend.

The Highland Travelers -- a new band formed from
parts of fine bands (the Boxcars and Rambler's Choice)

If you enjoy football, hope you enjoyed the game.  If you think football is dumb, hope you enjoyed our Bluegrass Cafe. :)

Thanks for listening!  We'll be looking for you Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.
