"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/27/2014

Short summary of Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe:  there was LOTS of music from one of the newest announced members of the Country Music Hall of Fame; a special in-studio visit with a local Bluegrass impresario; and a few songs from newer Bluegrass recordings.  Were you with us?

So nice to see folks honored while they're still around to enjoy it --
congratulations to Country Music Hall of Famer, Mac Wiseman!
On April 22nd, it was announced that "The Voice With A Heart," Mac Wiseman will be one of the 2014 inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame.  This is an amazing honor for a true Bluegrass and Country Music legend, and is richly deserved.  To honor this extremely distinctive vocalist, we played several songs that Mac recorded with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs when he was one of the original Foggy Mountain Boys in 1948, a couple of classic tracks from 1949 when Mac joined Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, a few songs from Mac as a soloist, and a couple from a record Mac made in 1998 with two other Bluegrass legends:  Del McCoury and Doc Watson.  Big congratulations to Mac!

We welcomed an in-studio visit with a "Colonel Buff-Orpington" commanding
Quite a cast of characters getting ready to entertain
at the Firebox on May 18th!
Dick Bowden's Flying Circus.  This is a big show coming up in the Bluegrass series of Sunday afternoon shows at the Firebox Restaurant, 539 Broad Street, Hartford CT, and is sure to feature a cast of talented characters that may be familiar faces to some in the New England/New York Bluegrass community.  If you're going to be in the Hartford area on May 18th, this may be a great show for you to check out.

And, we still had time to share a few songs from newer projects from folks like James King, Dolly Parton, Dave Adkins, Blue Highway, the Seldom Scene, Darren Nicholson, and Feller & Hill.  We even included a couple of very brand-new recordings from projects by Danny Roberts (the Grascals mandolin player has a solo CD) and Bradford Lee Folk & the Bluegrass Playboys.

Be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe beginning at 4PM, won't you?

Have a good week!

Amy

Playlist - 4/20/2014 - Easter

Hi Folks.

Bluegrass Cafe for Easter Day was in fact the final three hours of a seven-hour radio marathon for me because we had a full Red Rooster Party and another fill-in prior to the show.  As such, my blabbing was at a minimum and we were able to present 59 songs in our three-hours.

While the show consisted of our usual mix of classic, deep catalog, and new music; the last hour of the show was primarily gospel and inspirational music related to the Easter theme.

New music included the title track from Dolly Parton's new album which appears to be targeted towards bluegrass, music from Feller and Hill, Rhonda Vincent, Don Rigsby, Turning Ground, Jim Lauderdale, Bill Emerson, The Grascals, a new single from Becky Buller, Nitro Ride, Rich In Tradition, Alex Leach, and The Seldom Scene.

The Heritage Corner brought forth music from Bill Box and The Dixie Drifters, The Lynn Morris Band, Carl Sauceman and the Green Valley Boys, The Hillmen, Vern Williams & Ray Park, Bill Clifton, and of course The Johnson Mountain Boys.

Hope you enjoyed what you heard!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/13/2014

After a week's hiatus due to the broadcast of a UConn Baseball game, we hit the airwaves this week ready to go!  It was an absolutely gorgeous, early Spring weekend in eastern Connecticut -- just a fine day to listen to Bluegrass music (as if there's a bad day for that particular activity)!  Sure hope you were able to join us...

The "third Stanley brother," George Shuffler (1925-2014)
Since the last time we joined you on the air, another Bluegrass legend has left us:  on April 7th, Bluegrass Hall of Famer George Shuffler died at the age of 88 years, 361 days.  During his nearly 20 years of working with the Stanley Brothers, Shuffler was both an amazingly dynamic bass player, as well as one of the originators of the guitar style known as cross-picking.  An argument could easily be made that without Shuffler's cross-picking, the guitar might have remained more of a rhythm instrument in the Bluegrass world.  We remembered George Shuffler on Sunday with a bunch of classic Stanley songs on which he was the bass player, as well as a few guitar songs from Shuffler with the Stanleys, as well as on his own.

A bit of new music has arrived at WHUS since the last time I was in the Bluegrass Cafe, so I couldn't help but share it.  The newest disc from the Seldom Scene is called, "Long Time...Seldom Scene" and is the first recording from the band since 2007.  It's a dandy, too, so we gladly featured it today.

We also featured a couple of songs from the newest recording from a northern New York band known as BearTracks.  This wonderfully fun group used to include resonator guitarist Junior Barber and two of his cousins, Tom Venne and Julie Venne Hogan.  However, since their last band recording, Junior has retired from touring, and fiddler Harry Ralph and banjo picker Scott Hopkins have joined Tom and Julie.  It's a totally different sound for BearTracks -- and extremely enjoyable!  Their new recording is called, "Makin' New Tracks."

Other newer music came to us from recent recordings by Darren Nicholson, a new gospel recording from Volume Five, Tom Mindte, Ralph Stanley & Ralph Stanley II, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell, Special Consensus, and Rhonda Vincent.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard at some point during today's show, and that you'll be sure to join Jim on Easter Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy
