"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/25/2021

Our 52nd "homemade" Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole lot of fine Bluegrass music of both the classic and newer variety.  Hope you were able to join us!

"Norman Otto Namron" -- a mandolin
picker well-known to Phil Zimmerman

We shared several songs featuring the late Phil Zimmerman -- a Connecticut musician who passed on April 23rd.  Phil was an enthusiastic performer with several bands over the years (including Traver Hollow, from whom we heard several selections), and was also a top-notch photographer who travelled to many of the first Bluegrass festivals in the 1960s.  Phil recently made a generous donation of his Bluegrass photographs and ephemera to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame so that future generations will be able to enjoy his works.  Click on this link to read a fine remembrance of Phil Zimmerman and his works.

There was some good newer music to be heard during Sunday's broadcast, too, including selections from the Industrial Strength Bluegrass recording, Eddie Sanders, Matt Dudman, Dale Ann Bradley, Amanda Cook, Lakeside, Greg Blake, Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and a couple of tracks from the brand new recording from Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass.

Thanks for listening, and please consider joining me once more next Sunday, won't you?  4-7PM is the time and WHUS is the place.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/18/2021

If you are a fan of the music of the Louvin Brothers, today would have been a fine day to check our Bluegrass Cafe!  We played loads of Louvin tunes (covers and the Louvins, themselves) in honor of the birth anniversary of elder brother, Ira Louvin (April 21, 1924 - June 20, 1965).  We also celebrated the upcoming birthday of Bluegrass Hall of Famer Doyle Lawson (born April 20, 1944), and enjoyed lots more music, classic and new.  Hope you were able to join us!

Friendly reminder:  if you are a songwriter, the deadline for the 2021 Podunk Songwriters Contest is rapidly approaching.  Look for everything you need to know by clicking here.

While there wasn't quite as much brand-new music to showcase during this week's program, we still shared a few new (and new-to-us) tunes from the Industrial Strength Bluegrass compilation on Smithsonian Folkways, Nick Chandler & Delivered, Nu-Blu, Unspoken Tradition, Jason Davis (with Dan Tyminski), the Kody Norris Show, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, and Alan Bibey & Grasstowne.

Thanks so much for joining us for this session in our Bluegrass Cafe, and we will look forward to seeing you again next week, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/11/2021

During our 50th (!) "homemade" edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, we shared a whole bunch of brand-new music for 2021, as well as a few classic favorites, and a dozen-song tribute to the "Poet of the Common Man" - Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016).  Hope you were able to join us!

It seems that many Bluegrass performers have been recording while they haven't been able to play to live audiences, so that means we have a whole lot of new music to enjoy.  To that end, we shared selections from the brand new "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" collection from Smithsonian Folkways, as well as songs from forthcoming or recently-released recordings by the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Marty Raybon, Audie Blaylock & Redline, the Kody Norris Show, Merle Monroe, Lou Reid, Bobby Osborne, Rick Faris, Barry Abernathy, Carolyn Eyerly, and the Grascals.  Phew!

We couldn't let the birth anniversary of the great Merle Haggard pass without remembering his wonderful music, so we did that, mostly in a Bluegrass style.  Many performers over the years have recorded music from the Hag Songbook, but we chose tunes from Lost & Found, Jim Mills, Linda Lay, the Gibson Brothers, Beartracks, the Spinney Brothers, the Big Dogs with Tony Trischka, Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams, Rickey Wasson & J.D. Crowe, and the Ernie Thacker-Junior Blankenship Band.

Hope you have wonderful week, and do consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Take good care -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/4/2021

Happy Easter!  Hope you are enjoying a safe, socially-distanced holiday with family and friends!

Our Bluegrass Cafe for this day included (of course) a full hour's worth of Easter-themed Bluegrass music.  There have been a good number of songs recorded with an Easter theme, so hope we were able to play one of your favorites.

We remembered a wonderful Bluegrass performer in song -- Hazel McGee of White Mountain Bluegrass -- as she was born on April 2, 1941.  Sadly, Hazel died on October 27, 2014 after a long battle with cancer, but anyone who ever heard White Mountain Bluegrass perform live knows that this band was incredibly important in the history of Bluegrass, especially here in New England.  We shared several songs featuring her strong lead vocals.

There was a bit of newer Bluegrass to share, too, including several selections from
the brand-new "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" CD on Smithsonian Folkways, as well as single tunes from
Jesse Brock, Doyle Lawson & Alan Bibey, Rick Lang with James Kee, and Rick Faris.  We also heard recent music from Barry Abernathy and Dale Ann Bradley.

Thanks for joining us for this week's show!  We'll look forward to seeing you again next Sunday, 4-7PM.  In the meantime, if you'd like to check-in with a question, comment, or question, please do:  send email to bgcafe@gmail.com, or check out our Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
