"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/29/2017

Happy almost-Halloween!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured 60+ minutes' worth of Halloween-worthy songs including tales of witches, murders, ghosts, and mysterious lights.  Of course, if we were only allowed to play one Bluegrass Halloween song, it's likely that song would have to be a true classic from the Country Gentlemen:  "Bringing Mary Home."  When I was a kid, just looking at the album cover for that LP used to scare me quite a bit, but the song will live on forever...as it should.  Included with our spooky tunes was a new entry for 2017 -- "Sam Jocelyn's Ghost" from the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band.  Creepy!

We remembered two fine Bluegrass birthdays, too.  Martha Hearon Adcock celebrates her birthday on October 29th, as does a bona fide Bluegrass legend:  Sonny Osborne.  In fact, Sonny turns 80 years old today, so happiest birthday wishes to both Martha and Sonny!

Hope you heard something you enjoyed during this week's Bluegrass Cafe -- and that you will consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a spooktacular week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/22/2017

Somehow or other, we have now reached Wednesday, and I am finally getting around to posting Sunday's playlist for our Bluegrass Cafe.  Better late than never seems to apply here, I hope...

Louis Marshall Jones
(October 20, 1913 - February 19, 1998)
During the broadcast on Sunday, we celebrated some October birthdays, including those of Bob Amos, Eric Gibson, Joe Mullins, Fred Pike, and Larry Stephenson.  Most notably, we shared several songs written and/or performed by a true character (and Country Music Hall of Famer), Grandpa Jones.  We also heard a couple of selections from a fine gospel group of which Grandpa was a charter member:  the Brown's Ferry Four.

The rest of the show was sort of a mix of music -- some classic Bluegrass, some newer.  Among the newer were tunes from the Kevin Prater Band, Eddie Adcock, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Feller & Hill, and Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice.

Big thanks once again to Cathy and Keegan Day for sitting in on the Bluegrass Cafe which aired on October 15th.  Hope you'll be hearing them again on the air some time in the not-too-distant future.

And we will look for you again this coming Sunday -- October 29th -- for another Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/8/2017

The main feature on Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was the sharing of a dozen tunes written by a wonderful Bluegrass musician from the midwest who died this past week:  Aubrey Holt (August 15, 1938-October 5, 2017).  Holt, along with his brothers and uncle, were some of the founding members of the Boys From Indiana -- a very popular Bluegrass band beginning in the 1970s.  In addition to being a fine musician, Aubrey Holt was a fantastic songwriter whose songs have been covered in the Bluegrass world many times, including songs by bands which include relatives of Aubrey Holt: his son, Tony Holt & the Wildwood Valley Boys and his nephew, (Tom) Feller & Hill.

We also pulled out our Feature Letter of the Week once again, this time choosing performers with a band or personal name that begins with "H."  Among them:  selections from Hot Rize, Bobby Hicks, Clay Hess, Hammertowne, Rick Hayes, the Hagar's Mountain Boys, Bill Harrell, Randall Hylton, Billy Hurt, the Hillmen, and a few more H's thrown in for good measure.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and especially hope you'll be sure to join Cathy Day on the program next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

See you in a couple of weeks!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/1/2017

The last week of September found a whole lot of Bluegrass types down in Raleigh, North Carolina enjoying the World of Bluegrass events.  One of the highlights of the week is the annual International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards -- sort of the Bluegrass version of the Grammy Awards.  During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared music from several award-winners for 2017.  We also spent the first 30 minutes of the show recognizing the four newest inductees into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame:  Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, Bobby Hicks, and Roland White.

Marty Robbins
(September 26, 1925 - December 8, 1982)
We remembered Martin David Robinson -- forever known to the music world as Marty Robbins -- by sharing several Bluegrass versions of songs from the Marty Robbins Songbook, as well as the extended-length version of Marty singing his own 1959 classic, "El Paso."

In addition, there was some music from 2017 recordings, including the Still Pickin' Trio, a track by Shawn Camp from the Mac Wiseman "I Sang The Song" collection, Feller & Hill, Eddie Adcock, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, the Grascals, the Molly Rose Band, the Gibson Brothers, and Flashback.

Be sure to join us for our next Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!
