"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/31/2014

On this last day of August of 2014, we started the show with a boatload of songs pertaining to the same subject:  work.  It's Labor Day weekend -- time to celebrate hard-working men and women...by taking a day off from work!  Sounds like a great deal, doesn't it?  Our songs of work came from a bunch of different performers including the Carter Family, Richard Bennett, Cherryholmes, Dailey & Vincent, Blue Highway, Shannon Slaughter, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, and IIIrd Tyme Out.  Happy Labor Day, everyone!

We featured a whole bunch of music from 2014 recordings, some of which were issued very recently.  This music came to us from performers including Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, Nightflyer, Larry Sparks, Breaking Grass, Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, Shawn Lane, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, James King, the Spinney Brothers, Crowe, Lawson & Williams, the Roys, Balsam Range, and the Seldom Scene.

Our air schedule at WHUS changes three times during the year, and the changeover to the Fall schedule took place this last week.  Click here to see the Fall schedule for WHUS 91.7 FM.  New this semester, the station has also launched a second broadcast webstream, and some of the programs you've grown used to hearing on the radio have moved to that location.  For instance, if if you'd like to listen to James & Cathy Ward's "Bluegrass Rules" program, you will only find it now on WHUS2 on Tuesdays from 2-4PM.  To get to WHUS2, just visit www.WHUS.org, and click on the button that reads, "WHUS2."

Hope everyone has a fabulous week!  Be sure to check out Jim in next Sunday's "Bluegrass Cafe," won't you?

Playlist - 8/24/2014

Hi Folks.

This was the last Bluegrass Cafe of the WHUS summer schedule, and we are happy to report that we will continue in the fall at the same time, 4-7pm ET on Sundays.  Also, if you are into older string band and early country music, Jim & Marti's Red Rooster Party will be back in its time of 2-4pm Sundays just prior to Bluegrass Cafe when not preempted by UCONNed sports.

We celebrated the birthdays of J. D. Crowe and Carter Stanley with sets of their music and included new music from J. D.'s latest collaboration with Doyle Lawson and Paul Williams.

We also remembered banjo picker Greg Corbett who died unexpectedly the day before the show.  Greg had been a significant presence in the later Country Gentlemen with Charlie Waller, and had gone on to play and record with CG alumni in The Circuit Riders after Charlie's death.

New music included a track by Scott Walker from The Patuxent Banjo Project, a song from Al Jones & The Spruce Mountain Boys, Tom Mindte, Steve Gulley, Turning Ground, and the new album from Ohio group Nightflyer which we featured.

We also introduced the new collaboration between classic soul singer Sam Moore (Sam & Dave) and Siler City NC group Nu-Blu (who had just played the local Podunk festival a couple of weeks ago.)

The Heritage Corner produced some rarities for this show including vinyl from Everett Alan Lilly & Don Stover; old 45s from Buzz Busby & Leon Morris; Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings & the Twin River Boys; The Wilson Brothers (from Georgia); and Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis.  We also played some great re-releases from Charlie Moore & Bill Napier, and Carl Story.

Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring next Sunday, so don't forget to tune in.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/17/2014 (plus, a semi-Bluegrass fill-in, 8/14/2014)

Sunday's radio show featured a good deal of newer Bluegrass, some classic tunes, and a whole bunch of songs inspired by one iPod on shuffle!  Programming ideas come from the strangest places sometimes, eh?

Hylo Brown working with Earl & Lester
(and Paul Warren, too)
This weekend, while I was listening to a shuffle of the 5,000+ songs loaded on my iPod, I heard Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver's version of Hylo Brown's "Your Crazy Heart."  Hearing this song made me remember how unique was the voice of Frank Brown, Jr. -- known professionally as Hylo Brown (1922-2003) -- and that, in turn, made me think that he'd written some pretty great Bluegrass songs that ought be heard this very afternoon.  And so, we included the aforementioned DLQ song, as well as Hylo Brown-penned songs by Jimmy Martin, Tony Rice, James King, and IIIrd Tyme Out, as well as several selections by Hylo, himself.  Fun!

Since we're getting so close to IBMA's World of Bluegrass festivities, it always seems like there's a ton of new music coming out this time of year.  We played a good deal of that on Sunday's show, too, from performers including a brand new "trio" recording from J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, as well as Darren Nicholson, Danny Roberts, the Roland White Band, Chase & Melissa Johner, Dick Smith (from "The Patuxent Banjo Project"), Breaking Grass, Nightflyer, Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, Larry Sparks, Missy Werner, and Steve Gulley.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday afternoon, and that you'll be sure to join Jim next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/3/2014

Sunday's radio show featured a whole bunch of music -- some classic, some brand-spanking new, and some in-between.  All of it sounded pretty good to me!  Hope you thought so, too...

This Les Leverett photo captures six Grand Ole Opry
stars who traveled to NYC to play a show at Carnegie
Hall on November 21, 1961.  From the top:
Minnie Pearl, Jim Reeves, Faron Young,
Bill Monroe, Patsy Cline, Grandpa Jones.

As I've been trying to do this summer, I did a fill-in this past Thursday morning at WHUS.  During these fill-ins, I tend to play a lot of the classic country music that I really like, and this past Thursday was no exception.  When playing a song on Thursday from Jim Reeves, I realized that this year is the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that took his life -- July 31, 1964.  Jim Reeves was just one month short of celebrating his 41st birthday when he died, and while he wasn't necessarily a big songwriter, he did record a whole lot of music during his relatively brief recording career.  Some of those titles have been covered in the Bluegrass World, so we marked the anniversary of the passing of Jim Reeves with 5 Bluegrass covers of songs he'd also recorded, and even included a 1957 classic from Jim Reeves that is probably his most covered in Bluegrass music, "I've Lived A Lot In My Time."

During Thursday's fill-in, I had a question from a Bluegrass Cafe listener asking about the origins of "Shady Grove."  I had no answer for her on Thursday morning, and even after doing a little bit of research before Sunday's show, I still didn't have much of an answer.  Since the question had been asked, though, it inspired me to find a few different versions of this old folk song that has been recorded hundreds of times over the years.

Summer is a big season for new Bluegrass releases, and we've added bunches of them over the last few weeks.  Today's newer tunes came from Missy Werner, the Roland White Band, Rachel Burge & New Dawning, Steve Gulley, Larry Sparks, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Flatt Lonesome, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, the Spinney Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Balsam Range, and a track from the new banjo recording from Patuxent Music called "The Patuxent Banjo Project."

We also shared music from some of the upcoming performers at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in nearby-to-Storrs, Hebron, CT, next week:  August 7-9.  The Podunk performers we heard from included the Steeldrivers, Donna Ulisse, and Dave Adkins (with Edgar Loudermilk).  See you at Podunk!
