"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/28/2021

Howdy!  Here we are, already -- the last Sunday of February!  Hope you're doing well, and that you were able to join us for the 45th "home-made" edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

During Sunday's show, as always, we shared a few songs from folks who would have celebrated (or, who still celebrate) birthdays during this week.  Four of these birthday celebrants are members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, including
Doug Dillard, John Duffey, Don Stover, and Doc Watson.  We also remembered the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills, with a Bluegrass medley of his songs.

We also shared a few songs from two important albums in the history of Bluegrass music:  the Lonesome River Band's "Carrying The Tradition" (released 30 years ago this year), and the first "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" collection from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band who were joined by a whole bunch of their musical heroes (3-LP set released March 1, 1972).

Hope you enjoyed something you heard during today's broadcast, but here's a program note for the next two Sundays:  due to UConn Baseball broadcasts, our Bluegrass Cafe will air from 6-9PM on both March 7th and March 14th.  Hope you can still join us...just a bit later than "normal."

Stay healthy, and have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/21/2021

Happy Sunday!  Hope you were able to listen to our program this week, as it aired a bit later than our normal 4-7PM timeframe.  For the first time in nearly a year, our broadcast has been impacted by a UConn Sports event.  We will take that as a positive sign that COVID restrictions are easing back a bit, perhaps?  Either way, we'll keep you informed about changing times as much as we can during this Spring.

The show started with several selections from the late Joe Val, whose namesake festival sponsored by the Boston Bluegrass Union didn't get to happen over Presidents Day weekend.  We will keep our fingers crossed that there will definitely be a Joe Val Festival in 2022, but for now, it's always good to listen to his music.

There was a tiny bit of newer music to share this week, as well, and so, we heard a couple of tunes from California Bluegrasser Matt Dudman and his new CD called, "Poa," as well as newer songs from Larry Cordle, the Lonesome River Band, and Merle Monroe.

Several more Bluegrass birthdays were celebrated, too, included those of Don Reno, Little Roy Lewis, Ralph Stanley, and Pete Wernick.  We also remembered two Country Music Hall of Famers born one day apart in 1932:  Faron Young and Johnny Cash.  Both of these country legends have had their songs recorded by Bluegrass performers over the years, so we shared some of those renditions.

A good portion of our show was devoted to remembering guitar picker, Aaron "Frosty" Foster.  From the time he was a young boy, Aaron would spend summers travelling with his devoted grandparents, George and Etta Crawford, all over New York and New England attending Bluegrass festivals, and Aaron caught the "bug."  He learned to play the guitar (very well!) and then, attended East Tennessee State University to study in their music program.  In the blink of an eye (so it seemed), Aaron was picking with the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, playing in his own band (called Dreamcatcher), making his own records, and most recently, performing with the Amanda Cook Band.  Every summer, though, Aaron would still work at his "home" festival -- Vermont's Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival -- and lead the Kids' Academy.  He was always smiling and friendly, and clearly, he loved Bluegrass music.  Sadly, Aaron died on February 10th at the age of 28.  It's difficult to understand why this had to happen, but Aaron will be fondly remembered by everyone he touched in his short lifetime.  Read more about the fundraising efforts on his family behalf here:  Friends and fans chip in to help Frosty’s family - Bluegrass Today

Thanks so much for listening this week, and we'll look forward to visiting with you again next week.

Have a good week, and stay healthy!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/14/2021

It's February 14th, so I guess that means it's time to say Happy Valentine's Day!  Hope you've had a nice day surrounded by the things (or people!) you love.

Our radio show for today included lots of songs concerning matters of the heart -- and so, there were songs both of broken hearts and songs filled with positive love stories.  We may share a few more from both categories in next week's show, so hope you can join us.

February may be a short month, but it is one filled with lots of birthdays to be celebrated.  This week, we shared songs from several birthday celebrants, including Dudley Connell, David Davis, Claire Lynch, Mark Newton, and Don Rigsby.

We also remembered another Country Music Hall of Famer whose birthday would have been celebrated on the day this show was recorded (February 9th) -- Ernest Tubb (February 9, 1914 - September 6, 1984).  E.T.'s songs have been covered by lots of Bluegrass performers over the years, and we shared a few of those in tribute to the Texas Troubadour.

This show was completed and submitted for airplay to WHUS before the sad news came on Thursday of the death of a fine Bluegrass guitar player, and all-around nice young man, Aaron Foster.  If you have ever attended a Bluegrass festival in the northeast over the past 10+ years, you have likely seen Aaron jamming, playing on a stage, or directing a Kids' Academy.  Read this fine remembrance of Aaron (also known as "Frosty") that was published in Bluegrass Today on Thursday, February 11th:  Aaron "Frosty" Foster, gone way too soon at 28 - Bluegrass Today  Sincere condolences to Aaron's family and many friends, and we'll be sure to share some of his music during our broadcast on February 21st.

Enjoy your week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/7/2021

Sunday turned out to be a snowy day in eastern Connecticut, so it was fortunate that our show was recorded earlier in the week, and there was no need for a trip to the WHUS studio.

It was another super week for Bluegrass (and Bluegrass-friendly) birthdays.  We paid tribute to several folks with February birthdays, including the late Wilma Lee Cooper (who would have turned 100 years old on February 7th),
Donna Stoneman, Red Allen, Charlie Moore, Jim McReynolds, and David McLaughlin.

We also remembered the birthday of a multiple-Hall of Fame songwriter, Boudleaux Bryant.  Neither Bryant nor his wife, Felice, were Bluegrass performers, but if for no other reason, they will always be important to Bluegrass, as they were the songwriters of an Osborne Brothers' standard, "Rocky Top."

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and that you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday from 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week ~ stay healthy!
