"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 7/24/2011 - Johnson Mountain Boys Reunion

Hi Folks,

When Dudley Connell announced two Johnson Mountain Boys reunions for 2011 after a 15 year hiatus, I immediately began making plans to be at the events. The first one was this past Thursday 7/21 at Musicians Against Childhood Cancer, or "MACC," near Columbus, OH. I attended, and was certainly inspired by the music performed by Dudley, David McLaughlin, Richard Underwood, Marshall, Wilborn, and new member Michael Cleveland. For this show I played many of the songs performed by the Johnson Mountain Boys during their reunion concert. Most of the JMB catalog was originally released on Rounder Records.

Most of the other songs on this show were from artists who performed at MACC or will be performing at Podunk. This included new music from Paul Williams and the Victory Trio, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Donna Ulisse, Jerry Salley, Michael Martin Murphey, and songs from an upcoming Mark Twain project by Ricky Skaggs and Rhonda Vincent.

Tune in next week when I will be back, and perhaps have Marti with me.

Jim Beaver

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/17/2011

We had another beautiful Sunday afternoon in eastern CT, so hope it was equally nice wherever you might be.    As we always try to do, we filled our three hours of "BG Cafe" with some new(er) music, a couple of giveaways, and today, a chat with a fine BG performer who'll soon be appearing in Hamden, CT -- David Peterson.  On Tuesday, July 26th, David Peterson & 1946 will make a stop at a club called the Outer Space, as they journey toward a couple of BG festivals in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia later on in that week.  For more information on what promises to be a fantastic, traditional BG show, visit www.guitartownct.com.  And, of course, thanks to Dave for coming on the WHUS airwaves with us! (Lest there be confusion, Dave visited us today via telephone -- the photo comes from his last in-studio visit back in May 2010).

There has been quite bit of new music released over the past few weeks, and we tried to include a bit of it in Sunday's show.  Some of the new music comes from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Ricky Skaggs, Cumberland River, the Bankesters, Lonesome Highway, Michelle Nixon & Drive, and Thomas Porter & Copper River Band.

Giving away CDs is a fun thing to do, no matter what time of year it is.  On Sunday, we gave away copies of CDs by the band, No One You Know, as well as fiddler, Patrick McAvinue.  Thanks to the fine folks at Mountain Fever Records and Patuxent Music for supplying these great discs...

Hope you enjoyed Sunday's show, and I especially hope you'll be sure to tune in next Sunday when Jim is back with some great music in the "BG Cafe."

Have a great week -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 7/10/2011

Hi Folks,

This was beautiful summer day in New England -- perfect for having the radio tuned to Bluegrass Cafe for the late afternoon activities. To add to summer pleasures, we gave away a couple pairs of Saturday passes to the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival that takes place July 14-17 in Oak Hill, New York.

We debuted some new music including songs from The Bankesters, Thomas Porter & Copper River Band, Dana and Lauren, Michael Martin Murphey, and Val Storey.

We also paid tribute to the life of Kenny Baker (photo at top), the great Blue Grass Boy fiddler who passed away July 8. We played some of Kenny's fiddling from his 1976 album of Monroe songs (with Bill Monroe on mandolin) and a twin fiddling album he did with Joe Greene in 1968.

Festival and concert season is going full blast now, so we hope you can get out and hear some live bluegrass this summer. Besides Grey Fox coming up in a couple of weeks, we have the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival -- 2010 IBMA Event of the Year -- coming to East Hartford August 4-7, and many great concerts coming as well. A good resource for schedules is at the web site of the Connecticut Bluegrass Music Association.

Amy will be with you next week, so don't miss the action as Amy makes the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/3/2011

As you might expect for a show airing on the day before Independence Day, we kicked off Sunday's BG Cafe with a few tunes of a patriotic nature.  We sprinkled in a few other tunes with American themes throughout the program, and even included a song which commemorates the last day of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, which happened on July 3, 1863.

We always like to play new music on the air at WHUS, and while we included several songs from recently-released CDs this week, much of this music was by performers who can easily be considered to be legends in the world of BG.  There are two fine box sets from the folks at Gusto Records, featuring the music of the Stanley Brothers and Reno & Smiley.  There are also reissues and compilations from Rebel Records which contain great music by the late John Duffey (with both the Country Gentlemen and Seldom Scene), as well as the McPeak Brothers and Larry Sparks.  Other new and/or newer music came from Donna Ulisse, as well as Volume Five.

A couple of acts with New England ties have new recordings, too.  Acoustic Blue is a western Massachusetts-based quartet who was recently featured in a Bluegrass Unlimited article.  Their new recording is called "Timeless," and it's sure to be considered another gem by their many fans.  The other act with a new CD is a duo now based in Idaho, Peg (Chase) & Ed (Vande Voorde).  These two met while Ed was a member of the mostly New Hampshire-based band of the 1990s, Stonewall Bluegrass (pictured here with Ed on the guitar, joining Tim Mowry on mandolin, Gary Filgate on banjo, and Pete Soukas on bass).  Peg is a great songwriter, too, so to go along with music from the Peg & Ed CD, we included a song from Stonewall Bluegrass's 1993 cassette, "I Won't Be Troubled Anymore," as well as a tune written by Peg Chase and recorded by the Bear Bridge Band in the early 1990s called, "Women Of Sorrow."  Great stuff!

July 4th is, of course, the birthday of the U.S.A., but it's also the birthday of a few BG folks of note:  Jimmy Gaudreau (born July 3, 1946), Peter Rowan (born July 4, 1942), and a man semi-jokingly referred to as the "Uncle of Bluegrass," Bill's older brother, Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903).  To honor these three, we included tunes from each of them.

And if all of this wasn't enough, we had a few day passes to the upcoming Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival for listeners.  Be sure to join Jim next week, as he'll also have a few Grey Fox tickets to give away -- consider that just one more reason to join him for next week's BG Cafe.

Hope everyone has had a Happy 4th!

Amy
