"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/22/2009

At the midway point of Sunday's show, we took a few minutes to talk to old friend, Rick Hayes, about what he's been doing since he and the Gibson Brothers parted ways last fall, and, of course, his "Highlight Review" CD called Fly By Night. In addition to our conversation, we played a good number of tunes from this successful CD.

We also took a few minutes to celebrate the birthdays of two music icons: Johnny Cash (born February 26, 1932) and Dr. Ralph Stanley (born February 25, 1927) by playing BG versions of Cash songs and playing just a bit of music from amazingly broad catalog of Dr. Ralph.

New music was on the bill, too, as we played a couple of tunes from the much-anticipated all banjo CD from comedian Steve Martin, as well as the latest recording from eastern Massachusetts band, the Pine Hill Ramblers.

Jim & Marti join you next Sunday -- doubtless, you'll want to join them 'round about 4PM....

Amy

BG shows to know about: 2/28 & 3/1

Two pieces of live BG information for you this weekend...

On Saturday, February 28th, there is a show at the Killingly Grange Hall featuring the duet Spirit Fiddle, as well as CT band, Shady Creek. Showtime is 7PM, doors open at 6PM. Food is available at the hall. The Killingly Grange is located at the corner of Route 101 & Dog Hill Road in East Killingly, CT. For more information, call Nick Anderson at (860)564-1018.

Bluegrass at the Firebox Restaurant in Hartford continues on Sunday, March 1st. This week's featured band is from eastern MA -- Blackstone Valley Bluegrass. Music starts about 5:30PM, and runs until 8PM. There's no cover charge for this show. The Firebox is located at 539 Broad Street in Hartford.

(Also, Blackstone Valley BG will be playing at the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret on Saturday night, February 28th. Showtime is 8PM.)

A little chat with Rick Hayes -- Sunday, 2/22...

A brief programmer's note for you...

Rick Hayes (http://www.hayesproductions.com/) -- most recently known to a whole lot of folks as the mandolin player for the Gibson Brothers -- will be joining us on the air via the telephone during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe. Rick and the Gibsons parted ways last fall, but Rick has stayed busy playing music, building instruments, and enjoying the success of his solo recording released in the summer of 2008, "Fly By Night." In fact, this recording received a "Highlight Review" in the February 2009 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited. We'll talk about this achievement and more on Sunday's show -- BG Cafe starts at 4PM, we'll talk to Rick about 5PM.

Please join us! In southern New England, we're at 91.7 on your FM dial, or listen online anywhere at www.whus.org.

Bear Minimum in Northbridge, MA -- Friday, 2/20/2009

Fresh from the showcase stage at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, Bear Minimum (the offshoot of the Bear Bridge Band) will make an appearance on Friday, February 20th at the Grass Roots Coffeehouse in Northbridge, MA. Show starts at 7:30PM -- doors open at 6:45PM. This coffeehouse is held in the Rockdale Congregational Church, 46 Fowler Road, Northbridge MA.

Yes, this duo features my brother, Dave, (aka "Tex"), as well my "other brother," Dave Shaw, but I've seen them play to a great reception in several places, and have no reason to think they won't present a fine show on Friday night. Please come out and see them if you can.

Concert promoter and fine musician, Bob Dick, presents these shows in Northbridge. He says, too, that there will be some fine hot food and desserts available, so come on out to the show.

For more information, call (617)429-0347 or email Bob -- aplandbob@aol.com.

See you there!

Three Classic Country/BG fill-ins for Amy...

For three consecutive Tuesdays mornings, I got to play two hours' worth of Classic Country & BG at WHUS. As always, this was a whole lot of fun, as it gave me an opportunity to play music that is seldom heard on the airwaves....or at least those airwaves north of, say, Virginia. Of course, another subliminal reason for playing this music is that it might expose the BG music to some who've never heard it, and are not "regular" listeners of the BG Cafe. Don't know if that happened, but it's always worth a shot.....

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/8/2009

Sometimes, three hours can seem like a long time; other times, it can pass in the blink of an eye. To me, it seemed like the clock this Sunday was going extra fast -- don't know if it felt that same way for any of you. However, there were lots of things I meant to tell you and songs I meant to play, but I just didn't get a chance this time around. Maybe next time....

Anyhow, we managed to squeeze in a quick chat with Nick Novia -- a CT musician (Big Apple'achia, TrueGrass) -- who has been putting together the live BG presented each Sunday evening at the Firebox Restaurant in Hartford. While this all started as an experiment, Nick's been busy bringing in some great regional bands on Sundays for 3+ months, and there's no end in sight. Obviously, this timeslot presents a bit of a conflict in your BG Cafe radio listening, but it's certainly a great thing for you to listen to (and support!) the live BG once in a while. Another great reason to go to these shows: they're FREE. If you'd like to be put on Nick's email distribution list for what happens at the Firebox, just drop him an email: bigappleachia@gmail.com.

We managed to throw in some new music from a couple of fine young instrumentalists -- fiddler Patrick McAvinue ("Rutland's Reel") & banjo picker Mark Delaney ("Sidecar"). Both of these CDs are from the Patuxent Music label. In addition, we heard a tune from the latest CD by the Songs From The Road Band -- a grouping of sidemen from the Asheville, NC area.

In case you've not heard, Jim & Marti wrapped up their excellent Red Rooster Party program at WHUS this week. While it's sad to think that show has departed from the airwaves (for now), it's great to know that Jim & Marti will stay in the rotation for the BG Cafe. Rumor has it that Jim plans to add some "Roots of Bluegrass" segments in his future weeks on the air. That's definitely something for all of us to anticipate....

All three of us will be at the Joe Val BG Festival next weekend -- hope to see you there! There will be a UCONN basketball game preempting most of next Sunday's BG Cafe, but listen for Susan Forbes Hansen to play some folky Bluegrass for an hour or so after the game ends, and before her Sunday Night Folk Festival starts at 7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 2/1/2009

This show featured a live telephone interview with Del McCoury on his birthday. The Del McCoury Band will be performing at The Little Theatre in New Haven on Sunday, 8 February, so we thought it would be a good idea to talk to Del. The discussion was delightful. Del recalled the 1950s and 1960s days of the Baltimore bluegrass hot bed, and related how his most popular recording in recent history, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", was pitched to him by Connecticut resident Dick Bowden. If you missed the interview, you can hear it again here.

We also celebrated other bluegrass birthdays: David Parmley, Tom Gray, and Del's bandmate and fiddler - Jason Carter, by playing some of their recordings.

The songs were mostly vintage for this show, but we did slip in a few new recordings from Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, Special Consensus, Balsam Range, Mac Wiseman, Dry Branch Fire Squad, New England band Crossover, Audie Blaylock and Redline, and Pam Gadd.

Tune in next week when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.
