"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/26/2008

It was another great bluegrass day with great New England fall weather, and you let Marti and me know it by keeping the phones ringing during Bluegrass Cafe. Thanks a lot!

We gave away a few CDs to callers as we do from time-to-time, so you can add to your music collection just by keeping your dial on 91.7 or your browser on whus.org

I got my hands on some classic bluegrass recently re-released on CD -- Jim Eanes, Bobby Atkins, Mark Atkins and the Original Countrymen -- and I was happy to bring that great picking and unique singing your ears.

We also saluted some historic calendar events such as Snuffy Jenkins' birthday (10/27/1908), Mike Hartgrove's birthday (10/27/55), Bill Monroe joining the Opry (10/28/39), and Jimmy Martin's recording of "Train 45" (10/30/2008) by playing songs of these great bluegrassers.

We also want to wish Jack Holland (I sometimes call him "John") a very happy birthday (Meg squealed on him). Jack is a great bluegrass supporter and runs a very fine New England bluegrass blog. Check it out at this link.

Amy will keep the banjos and fiddles ringing next week.

Jim

Live Bluegrass music in CT -- this weekend!

If you're in search of some live BG in Connecticut this weekend, here are a couple of options for you:

Nick Anderson kicks off his series of shows at the Killingly Grange Hall this very evening (Saturday, 10/25) with two bands: Pine Creek & Nick's own band, Shady Creek. Music starts at 7PM. The Killingly Grange is located on the corner of Route 101 & Dog Hill Road in East Killingly, and is easily accessible from Interstate 395. For more information, call (860)564-1018.

On Sunday, there are a couple of possibilities....

From noon-4PM, GrassRoutes will be performing at Roses Berry Farm, 295 Matson Hill Road, South Glastonbury. Admission is FREE. For more information, call (860)633-7467.

On Sunday evening, TrueGrass takes the stage at the Firebox Restaurant, 539 Broad Street, Hartford. Music happens from 5-8PM with no cover charge. This is third week in a row that the Firebox has offered BG on Sunday evenings -- Nick Novia is working with the restaurant to keep the music going for the next several Sunday evenings. A call from "BG Cafe" listener Dick Bowden last Sunday revealed that the music was great at the Firebox, and the restaurant itself was easy to find. Check it out, if you're so inclined. For more information, call (860)246-1222.

As always, we encourage you to get out and support the local BG shows whenever they happen.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/19/2008

Sunday's show was another fun one for me. I got to play a good mix of old & new, as well as a few "locals" thrown in for good measure. Enjoyable for me, and I hope for you, too.

In years' past, I always used to go over the Bluegrass calendar each week and spotlight performers who were celebrating birthdays or other significant events that week. I hadn't done that in a while, so I tried to reintroduce it this week. We'll see if I can keep up with it in future shows....

Jim & Marti join you for next week's Cafe -- do join them!

Country Corner kicks off 2008-2009 season....

This Saturday, October 18th, Dave Helman will kick off his 18th season of shows at the Country Corner Coffee House (also known as the South Hadley Falls Congregational Church Fellowship Hall), 11 North Main Street, South Hadley, MA. The featured band this month is one from the northwestern corner of Connecticut -- NorthernBound. The Paden Brothers (Harry, Steve, & Ray) along with Mike LaRocque have been playing in this configuration for more than 14 years, and they are favorites wherever they perform.

There is a new fifth member of NorthernBound who (unfortunately) won't be at Saturday's show: Cathy Day on fiddle. WHUS Bluegrass listeners may recall Cathy by her maiden name -- Cathy Bumgarner. While an undergrad at UCONN in the early 1990s, Cathy was on the air at WHUS as one of the broadcasters of Bluegrass.

While Dave & Rose Helman haven't completely set the lineup for all of the Country Corner shows this season, here's what they have lined up so far:

November 15th - David Davis & the Warrior River Boys
January 17th - Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition
February 21st - Jen Larson & Straight Drive
March 21st - TBA
April 18th - Crossover

For all shows, the doors open at 7PM -- the show starts at 8PM. For more information, call (413)467-9394, email info@countrycornermusic.com, or click here.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/12/2008

Though many listeners were enjoying the great Gibson Brothers concert in Canterbury, we kept the folks who couldn't make it to the concert entertained with some of the best in bluegrass music on Bluegrass Cafe.

We pulled some rare gems from our collection to augment lots of great new music. Two especially interesting rarities were the tracks from Don Stover's recording "Live at Davis & Elkins College", and Mark Newton, Larry Stephenson, and a Who's Who of guests "Live at Mr. B's". Both of these albums were recorded in the 1980s.

Tune in next Sunday when Amy will keep the banjos and fiddles ringing.

Jim & Marti

Possible BG (& BG-related) shows in New Haven -- your opinion is requested....

Folks -

Chris Wuerth of GuitartownCT Productions -- producer of BG shows in New Haven at the Little Theater -- is looking for opinions on potential shows to book for 2009. He has a list of potential shows (granted, not all performers are 100% Bluegrass), along with projected ticket prices, and is seeking opinions. You may either leave your comments below, and we'll forward the info to Chris, or you can email him directly at info@guitartownct.com.

Don't forget his upcoming shows: Tim O'Brien comes to the Little Theater on Sunday, November 2nd, and Cherryholmes on Sunday, November 18th. Both shows begin at 3PM. For more information on these shows, click here, or call (203)430-6020.

Read on to see Chris's email....

GuitartownCT is in the process of scheduling shows for 2009. Here are some of the artists we're considering, and approximate ticket prices we would have to charge to afford them. These are all pretty big names who command top dollar to perform. We try our best to book the performers that you want. We would appreciate your feedback on which of these artists you prefer, and whether you would pay the estimated ticket price. If the response is positive, we can bring some amazing shows to The Little Theater next year. Thanks for your support in helping us bring great music to New Haven. Chris Wuerth

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/5/2008

On Sunday, we started the show playing some tunes from a few of the big winners at this year's IBMA Awards. It seems that 2008 will be remembered as the Year of Dailey & Vincent. For a full list of all of the award winners, click here.

We also played 7 songs in tribute to "Mr. Teardrop" -- one of the many monikers bestowed on the late Marty Robbins through the years. Marty (who was born on September 26, 1925) sang all kinds of music throughout his career. While I've never heard that he sang any Bluegrass, it really wouldn't be too surprising if he had. Like the music of many country singers of his era, plenty of Marty Robbins tunes have been recorded in the BG style, and it seems only appropriate to include a bunch of them in celebration of what would have been Marty's 83rd birthday.

On top of that, there was new music from the brand-new offering from the Daughters Of Bluegrass ("Bluegrass Bouquet" on Blue Circle Records) and a band from Italy called RedWine.

Next Sunday is a day with a lot of live BG -- a big benefit in Orange, MA and the Gibson Brothers in Canterbury, CT. If you can't make it to one of those events, we cordially invite you to check out Jim & Marti in the BG Cafe.
