"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/29/2011

Outside, it was a beautiful Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend, while inside, we had LOTS of great music to share on the ol' radio. Hope you were able to listen in for at least a bit...

Keeping in the festive, celebratory mode, there were a couple of significant folks in the music world who marked their birthdays this past week, so we put together a couple of different sets to observe those special days. The show opened with four songs which have come from the very prolific pen of Bob Dylan, who turned 70 on May 24th. Granted, Dylan IS NOT a BG performer by any stretch of the imagination, but his songs have been appreciated and covered in many different genres, including Bluegrass. While we could have played more Dylan tunes, we limited ourselves to just four from the Seldom Scene, the Hillmen (featuring Vern Gosdin), Earl Scruggs, and the Country Gentlemen. (And for the record -- no pun intended -- Bob Dylan has recorded some BG, as he joined none other than Ralph Stanley on Ralph's double CD from 1998, "Clinch Mountain Country.")

Two more folks who celebrated birthdays this past week have closer ties to the BG world. It's really not very unusual to pick up a new BG CD these days and find at least one tune written or co-written by Tom T. Hall and/or his wife, Miss Dixie Hall. The Halls both celebrated birthdays this week -- Tom T. turning 75 on May 25th and Miss Dixie celebrating her own birthday on May 26th. While it would be very easy to fill the entire three hours of the program with music written or co-written by the Halls, we included seven tunes in this set from performers like Charlie Sizemore, Longview, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Linda Lay & Sammy Shelor, Big Country Bluegrass, the Crowe Brothers, and Tom T. Hall himself.

On a personal note, my own brother, Dave (a/k/a "Tex") Orlomoski celebrated his birthday today, so I couldn't NOT play a tune or two he sang with the Bear Bridge Band.

Memorial Day tunes were a must, of course. Sometimes, it seems like folks forget that the holiday is about so much more than just picnics and big sales at the mall. It's extremely important to remember those soldiers who've died -- and who continue to make that supreme sacrifice -- for our country and for all of us. There are many songs which tell the story of soldiers who never made it home -- we made sure to play a few of those tunes today.

Be sure to join Jim next Sunday afternoon, and if you're going to the Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival in Preston, CT, you may be able to see him there doing some MC work. Be sure to say howdy. Also, if you're one of the millions with a Facebook account, we hope you'll take a look at our pretty new Facebook page and "like" it. You can find us by looking for "WHUS Bluegrass Cafe."

Have a great week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 5/22/2011

Hi Folks,

Marti made a rare co-host appearance on Bluegrass Cafe and kept the fun factor high as we played a wide swath of new and classic bluegrass music.

While this program featured more classic and vintage music than usual, new music included songs from Audie Blaylock and Redline, Ashlee Blankenship, Louisa Branscomb (sung by John Cowan and Jim Hurst), The High Rollers, and Randy Waller.

Also, check our the new WHUS Bluegrass Cafe Facebook page!

That "new-fangled" technology...

Howdy!

You may have noticed a suggestion on this website to visit our Facebook page, as well. We really hope you will, as our Facebook page for BG Cafe is brand new -- in fact, as of today, it's 3 days old. Facebook is one of those (sometimes annoying) social networking websites that has become almost a necessary form of communication in our technology-crazy world. So many times now, you might look at an advertisement in a magazine, or watch a TV show, and you'll see or hear a message that says, "Be sure to visit us on Facebook." Well, if you're one of the millions of folks with a Facebook account, we also want you to be sure to visit the new BG Cafe Facebook page. There, you'll be able to see photos, read playlists, and learn what's going on (or coming up) with the radio show. Is that a whole lot different than the info you can find on this BG Cafe blog? Not really -- it's just a different method of communication. When you visit our page, be sure to "like" us, and all of this new information that we add will automatically become part of your "news feed" on Facebook.

If you don't already have a Facebook account, none of this will make the slightest bit of sense to you...and that's fine. Becoming a "friend" of BG Cafe on Facebook isn't required to listen to -- and hopefully enjoy -- our radio program. You can even see our Facebook page without actually logging on to Facebook (you just wouldn't be able to post anything without an account).

We've made it pretty easy for you to find us on Facebook. All you need to know:

www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe

Check it out...if you can! We'll be looking for you...

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/15/2011

Weather-wise, Sunday was kind of a gloomy day in Storrs, CT. It's definitely a quiet campus with most of the students gone, but we still like to keep the "festive" atmosphere on the airwaves. Do we always succeed? Perhaps not, but I think Sunday's show was a good one (even if I might be slightly biased)... The show began with a brief tribute to a true BG icon: Lester Raymond Flatt. This past week was the 32nd anniversary of Lester's passing at the relatively young age of 64 (May 11, 1979). What a legacy he's left us...even after all these years. We could easily fill several shows with just versions of the tunes that were written or co-written by Lester Flatt -- and we may get to some of those as we get closer to the anniversary of Flatt's birth (June 19, 1914).

This week also included birthdays for two country singers who, though not considered a "Bluegrass act," are still close enough to the BG world for me. Johnnie Wright (born May 13, 1914) and his musical partner -- and brother-in-law -- Jack Anglin (born May 13, 1916) made some great records in the 1940s and 1950s -- many of which have been recorded by BG performers through the years. If that's not enough of a BG connection, the great fiddler Paul Warren (who would work with Flatt & Scruggs for many years), also played with Johnnie & Jack & the Tennessee Mountain Boys for several years throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s (see photo below, taken in 1953). We didn't have time to play too many Johnnie & Jack tunes in today's show, but we were able to squeeze four tunes into two, thanks to the Country Gentlemen's "Johnny & Jack Medley."

New music is always important to us at the BG Cafe, and today we were able to showcase new tunes from forthcoming projects from Audie Blaylock & Redline, as well as Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. We also included newer music from the likes of Cumberland Gap Connection, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Gibson Brothers, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, Sierra Hull, Ashlee Blankenship & Blades of Blue, Claire Lynch (from Compass Records' "I'll Take Love: From The Pen Of Louisa Branscomb" collection), Russell Johnson, Steve Spurgin, Terry Baucom, Tom Mindte & Jeremy Stephens, Jay Armsworthy, and Shannon Slaughter.

Our spotlight shone a bit today on bass player Edgar Loudermilk. Edgar currently works (very happily) with Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, but he has a really terrific solo recording out these days, as well. We were able to visit with Edgar for a few minutes about the solo recording ("Roads Travelled" on Mountain Fever Records) -- a project featuring twelve tunes he either wrote or co-wrote which was about 7 years in the making. With guests like Edgar's former and current employers (Marty Raybon, Rhonda Vincent, Russell Moore), how could the CD be bad, right? After our chat, we were able to give away copies of the CD to two listeners, so giving things away is always fun. For more information on Edgar Loudermilk, you can visit his website by clicking here, or, of course, visit with him and the rest of Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out when they play at the upcoming Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival in Preston, CT on June 3rd.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard during today's show, and do be sure to tune into the BG Cafe next Sunday with Jim. You'll be glad you did...

Have a good week -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 5/8/2011 - Mother's Day

Hi Folks,

We braved the graduation crowds at UCONN to bring you this program which started a half-hour late for a baseball preemption, but we had time to honor our mothers on Mother's Day with a bunch of bluegrass "mother songs." We also had time to bring you an interview with Tony Trischka and give away a couple of tickets to his upcoming show, Tony Trischka Territory, in East Hartford, CT, Saturday May 21.

Also on this program were the first two of several songs recorded the day before by The Spinney Brothers in our own WHUS production studio. Amy and I will be playing the remaining tracks in the future as I get all the post-processing completed.

One of the newest "mother songs" on this program was a new one from Randy Waller and the Country Gentlemen and their new album "One Mile East Of Hazel Green."

A couple of great new songs came from another new CD in the studio titled "I'll Take Love (From The Pen Of Louisa Branscomb)." Louisa is a fine songwriter who has had many of her songs recorded by prominent bluegrass and country artists.

The playlist follows this picture of my mom.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/1/2011 (plus one hour)

For the third week in a row, Bluegrass Cafe was extended by one hour, as "Dr. B's Musical Prescription" was not on the air. It's the end of the semester at UCONN, so I guess that's not too, too unusual.

So...what to do with that extra hour? This week, I felt the need to play a bit of classic country music. Originally, I had intended to play a variety of performers, but this week, the focus fell pretty much on one Clarence Eugene (Hank) Snow, who was born on May 9, 1914. Many of
Hank Snow's tunes have been recorded by BG performers through the years, so it wasn't really much of a stretch to play three covers of Hank's tunes, plus two of Hank's own tunes. Something we were playing during this hour must have appealed to listeners, though, as the phone was very busy. We even had one person who was a trucker passing through CT on Interstate 395 call in and ask to hear, "Tennessee Stud." How convenient that the next caller wanted to hear Johnny Cash, as we were able to combine the two requests...

Once we got into the "official" time for the
BG Cafe, we stayed with straight BG tunes.

For many years, I will admit that
Lynn Morris was my favorite female singer of BG music. Sadly, since suffering a stroke in the Spring of 2003, Lynn hasn't really been able to play music on a regular basis, as she has some difficulty remembering lyrics. Consequently, Lynn Morris doesn't really play music on stage anymore (although she did play one set at the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in 2007, as you can see in this photo). However, today, Lynn Morris was scheduled to take the stage at a BG festival in Winchester, VA with her husband, Marshall Wilborn, and other former members of the Lynn Morris Band (Jesse Brock, Tom Adams, Ron Stewart). I have no doubt that Lynn had a large number of folks pulling for her in the audience today. There's a great profile article which was published in the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper on April 30th. Read it by clicking here.
Last week, Jim put together a great tribute set to
Hazel Dickens, who died on April 22nd. This week, I wanted to continue that tribute a bit, so I put together a few tunes recorded by others (including Lynn Morris, Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, the Johnson Mountain Boys, Laurie Lewis, & Springfield Exit) which came directly from the pen of Hazel Dickens. This amazing lady wrote so much great music through the years that you'll continue to hear it for a good long while, without a doubt -- and that's the way it should be.
New music continues to be a big part of our playlist at
BG Cafe, as well, and there is just a surplus of it these days. On the show this week, we played new or newer recordings from the likes of Tom Mindte & Jeremy Stephens, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Bill Emerson, Tony Holt & the Wildwood Valley Boys, Ashlee Blankenship & Blades Of Blue, Steve Spurgin, NewFound Road, Shannon Slaughter, Terry Baucom, and James Reams & the Barnstormers.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on today's
BG Cafe, and that you'll be sure to join Jim on next week's edition of the show...
