"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/30/2017

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was not planned at all.  That is, I always figured on hosting the radio show today, but this week, I didn't prepare for even one second of it.  Pretty dopey, I know.  Still, every once in a while, programming on the fly can be an enjoyable method of show prep.  I didn't think the show turned out too badly -- hope you agree!

The final nominees for 2017 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards were announced this week, and we shared a few songs from several nominees, including Balsam Range, Rickey Wasson, Shawn Camp, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, the Gibson Brothers, and the Earls Of Leicester.  Congratulations to all of the nominees -- and good luck!

In addition to the IBMA Awards for 2017, there will be three inducted acts (total of four people) into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.  This time around, we included several songs from 2017 inductee Roland White, as well as one song each from Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard and Bobby Hicks.

For new music, we played a couple of songs from the very brand-new recording from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers:  "The Story We Tell," as well as a song from the forthcoming Rural Rhythm recording from Feller & Hill.

And we didn't forget our Letter of the Week, either.  This time around, the letter was "C."  We missed a whole bunch of "C" performers this time around, but perhaps we will have another session of "C"s on another day.  The "C" performers included acts as varied as California, J.D. Crowe, the Carter Family, Russ Carson, the Case Brothers, Michelle Canning, Cherryholmes, and, of course, the Country Gentlemen.

Hope you have a fabulous week!  We'll see you once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/23/2017

Our primary objectives for Sunday afternoon's Bluegrass Cafe:  give away a couple of one-day passes to and chat a bit about the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival and to have an on-air visit with one of the fine main stage performers, Becky Buller.  Mission accomplished.

Becky Buller is the reigning International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Female Vocalist of the Year and Fiddle Performer of the Year.  She will also be making her first trip to the Podunk Bluegrass Festival with her own very active band, the Becky Buller Band.  We enjoyed visiting with her this afternoon, and hope you will enjoy seeing her band perform at Podunk on Saturday, August 12th.  Other Podunk performers whose music was included on Sunday's show included the Gibson Brothers, Rhonda Vincent, and David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition.

For new music, we shared a couple of cuts from the fine new project on Rebel Records from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers -- "The Story We Tell."  The gospel set included four songs from an album that is a personal favorite:  "We'll Still Sing On" by the Johnson Mountain Boys (Rounder, 1985).

Hope you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon for another visit to our Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/16/2017

Instead of just playing random records during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, I thought it might be fun to pick a letter from the alphabet and try to make the majority of the music on the playlist come from performers whose first, last, or band name began with that letter.  Granted, this isn't the world's most original idea; in fact, "Sesame Street" has been "sponsoring" episodes by individual letters for years.  For this week, it seemed like the proverbial "no brainer" to focus on the letter B.  After all, B is Bluegrass, B is for Banjo, and B is even for Bill Monroe (at least by my "first or last name" rules, that is, even if "Bill" was a nickname for William Smith Monroe).  In Sunday's playlist, 30+ songs were performed by "B" performers as varied as Blue Highway, the Boys From Indiana, Big Country BluegrassJesse Brock, the Blue Sky Boys, the BoxcarsJunior BarberBalsam Range, and the Bray Brothers, just to name a few.  What letter is next?  We'll have to wait and see...

We also remembered the upcoming birthday of a wonderful Bluegrass fiddler
Bobby Hicks with musical partner, Mark Kuykendall
who will turn 84 on July 21st, but who continues to perform and make records with his most recent band.
Bobby Hicks worked was a Blue Grass Boy on-and-off for several years in the 1950s, was an important part of Ricky Skaggs's band during his country music heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, and this month, released a second recording on Rebel Records with his latest band, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.  Happy Birthday, Bobby Hicks!

Hope you'll consider joining me next Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!  On the agenda:  an on-air chat with Becky Buller who will be performing with her band at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival coming up August 10-13 in Hebron, CT.  We'll also some Podunk day passes to give away, so we'll be looking for you next Sunday...

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/9/2017

Happy 88th birthday, Jesse McReynolds -- mandolin
cross-picking innovator and Bluegrass Hall of Famer!
Sunday, July 9th is the 88th birthday of bona fide Bluegrass legend -- and Bluegrass Hall of Fame member -- Jesse Lester McReynolds.  To that end, we made sure to share several songs from his songbook, although we quite easily could have filled up all three hours with Jesse McReynolds music.  Maybe next time...

In addition, there were birthdays songs for three other July birthday celebrants:  Rhonda Vincent, Richard Underwood, and Mike Barber.

Eddie Adcock's old "new" album!
Among the birthday songs, too, was a small amount of newer Bluegrass music -- some from a record that won't be released until later this year (from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers), and one "new" record that was actually recorded by Bluegrass Hall of Famer Eddie Adcock in 1963.  Several other 2017 recordings were heard, too, from Matt & George & Their Pleasant Valley Boys, Ned Luberecki, the Still Pickin' Trio, Big Country Bluegrass, and Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and that you'll be sure to join me or Cathy Day next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/2/2017

Happy July 3rd Birthday to RI native, Jimmy Gaudreau
(seen here c. 1969ish)
On the Sunday before Independence Day, we had a bunch of things to celebrate!  In addition to sharing several songs with a patriotic theme, we also remembered birthday celebrants Jimmy Gaudreau (born July 3, 1946), Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903), and Peter Rowan (born July 4, 1942); the Battle of Gettysburg (fought in Gettysburg, PA from July 1 through July 3, 1865); and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart (whose plane disappeared in the South Pacific on July 2, 1937).  That's a lot of music to play in a commemorative nature -- even before we got around to playing any other music.

Dave Evans (July 24, 1950 - June 26, 2017)
The Bluegrass World lost another original voice this past week when Dave Evans, a fine banjo picker and powerful vocalist, died on June 26th, less than one month before celebrating his sixty-sixth birthday.  In tribute, we featured a couple of songs:  one showcasing Dave Evans's vocals, and the second an instrumental number featuring his banjo.

A small portion of new Bluegrass for 2017 made it on to our WHUS airwaves on Sunday, too.  Among those newest recordings was music from the Garrett Newton Band, Big Country Bluegrass,
Traditional Bluegrass from the Golden West
Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, the Gibson Brothers, the Lonesome River Band, Still Pickin', and Matt And George & their Pleasant Valley Boys.

Have a safe and happy 4th, and we'll be looking for you on Sunday afternoon at 4PM!

Amy O.
