"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/26/2021

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe started with music appropriate for the changing seasons, and also included all five nominees for IBMA Song of the Year, lots of birthday tributes, new music, and a few classics, too.

The big International Bluegrass Music Association World of Bluegrass event takes place this coming week in Raleigh, North Carolina, with the highlight event coming on Thursday, September 30th when the IBMA Awards ceremony is held.  We played all five songs that are nominated in the category of Song of the Year.  We also shared selections from the three newest members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame:  Alison Krauss, Lynn Morris, and the Stoneman Family.

There were several Bluegrass birthdays to remember this week, including those of Laurie Lewis, Kathy Kallick, Marty Stuart, and others.  We also paid tribute to Country Music Hall of Famer, Marty Robbins (September 26, 1925 - December 8, 1982).

Hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful last Sunday of September.  We'll be looking forward to joining you again next Sunday, too.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/19/2021

During our second back-to-the-studio Bluegrass Cafe, we paid tribute to not one but two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, shared a healthy portion of new music, and included a whole lot of favorites, too.  Hope you were able to join us!

The two members of the Hall of Fame were -- and still are -- probably considered to be the top two male country singers of all time.  Though neither were ever "Bluegrass singers," their material certainly has been covered in the World of Bluegrass over the years.  Who are these singers?  Well, none other than George Jones (September 12, 1931 - April 26, 2013) and Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953).  Wonderful music.

We had a little bit of brand new music to share this week, too, with never-before-heard-on-our-program songs from Junior Sisk, Irene Kelley, Shannon Slaughter, and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road.  We also shared a good bit of music from recordings we've received over the last year, and were trying to find shelf space for at WHUS today.  Those performers were Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Ronnie Bowman, David Peterson & 1946, Tina Adair, the Larry Stephenson Band, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Jesse Brock, Amanda Cook, Merle Monroe, Balsam Range, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the King James Boys, and Jeremy Stephens

Hope you have a wonderful week.  We'll be looking for you next Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/12/2021

For the first Sunday since March 8, 2020, our Bluegrass Cafe was presented live from the WHUS studio at the University of Connecticut.  Does this mean that everything is now completely back to "normal?"  Not really, as COVID regulations currently require us to broadcast while wearing a mask, but overall, it's a step in the right direction, for sure.  While our broadcast wasn't the smoothest ever, it was fun to present music in celebration of a few birthdays, plus there was new music and some classic tunes, too.  Hope you were able to join us!

September 13th is the birth anniversary of the Father of Bluegrass Music, William Smith Monroe (September 13, 1911 - September 9. 1996).  While you can be assured that you will hear a Bill Monroe tune (either performed or written by him) just about every Sunday, today, we added a few extras in celebration of what would have been Bill's birthday.  Other birthday celebrants for this week include Country Music Hall of Famer (and King of Country Music), Roy Acuff, Lou ReidBill Harrell, and Michael Cleveland. We also remembered the late Aaron Foster, who would have celebrated his 29th birthday on September 11th.

There was a smidge of new music, too, from the the likes of Marty Raybon, Starlett & Big John, and the Grascals.  We also included music we've received over the past 18 months from folks like Jesse Brock, Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition, Barry Abernathy, Laurie Lewis, High Fidelity, the Feinberg Brothers, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, the Kody Norris Show, Rock Hearts, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

And if all of that wasn't enough, we shared a few songs in honor of National Grandparents Day.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way today, and that you'll consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/5/2021

Hard to believe, but we've already reached Labor Day weekend.  Where did the summer go?  It seems in eastern CT, we had either days of monsoon-type rains or days of high humidity this summer.  Still, our Labor Day Sunday edition of the
Bluegrass Cafe -- the 71st of our COVID-era, recorded-at-home shows -- began with several songs about laboring -- perfectly appropriate for this day.

In addition to music celebrating labor, we belatedly celebrated the birth anniversary of the Queen of Country Music, Kitty Wells (August 30, 1919 - July 16, 2012).  Kitty Wells was not a voice of Bluegrass music, but like many of her classic country contemporaries, her music has been covered in the world of Bluegrass.

There was a tiny bit of newer music to share this week, too, with brand new selections from forthcoming CDs from Bela Fleck's My Bluegrass Heart and Kristy Cox, as well as newer music from Jeremy Stephens, Jesse Brock, Rock Hearts, Still Pickin', Tina Adair, the Alex Leach Band, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, the Lonesome River Band, and the Industrial Strength Bluegrass collection.

Thanks for listening!  Enjoy the weekend -- and the week, too!

Amy O.
