More information on two "Precious Jewels"...

You may have heard a tune called "Maybelle's Guitar And Monroe's Mandolin" by Robin & Linda Williams on Sunday's BG Cafe. This song is found on the Williams's most recent recording, "Buena Vista," and it tells a nice story about the Gibson L-5 guitar owned by Mother Maybelle Carter and Bill Monroe's Gibson F-5 Loar mandolin, and how the two instruments who served their respective owners so well for so many years are now in an exhibit side-by-side at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. These instruments were purchased by the Hall of Fame a few years ago with funds that were acquired from a benefactor who turned out to be fraudulent. Now, the Hall of Fame is trying to raise funds to legally purchase these instruments, and they are actively seeking donations.

To read more about this story, click here for a recent article in Nashville's newspaper, The Tennessean, or here for an article posted on the Hall of Fame's website.

Obviously, these are not the best times for any organization to be searching for donations. However, if you are interested in seeing these instruments that have meant so much in the history of Bluegrass & Country Music in a place where they can continue to be admired by all, you may wish to contribute to the cause. Donations can be made online, with a major credit card by calling (615)416-2050, or by sending a check directly to the Hall of Fame at this address:

Checks should be made out to the Country Music Foundation. Please specify Precious Jewel Fund.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/25/2009

Well, we didn't have snow on Sunday in CT, but with the mercury in the thermometer never getting much higher than 20 degrees, it seems that a good number of you must have been staying inside to listen to some BG on the ol' radio. We're glad you were there!

With the new year, we've started to receive a few new CDs to share with you all. Sunday's show put the focus on some new music from the likes of the Lost & Found, Wayne Taylor & Appaloosa, the bluegrass project by country/cowboy singer Michael Martin Murphey, a CD of music based on the Civil War by the North Carolina duo of Barney Rogers & Russell Johnson, and an old-timey sounding band from Virginia called the Whitetop Mountain Band. In addition, there were a couple of tunes each from very fine "Signs" by the Special Consensus and a vintage country-sounding disc from David Peterson called "Comin' On Strong." Look forward to hearing more music from all of these performers on WHUS, as well as plenty more, I'm sure.

We also took a quick look at the nominees in the "Best Bluegrass Album" category for this year's Grammy Awards (to be handed out on February 8th). Four of the five recordings (by Cherryholmes, Ricky Skaggs, Dan Tyminski, & Earl Scruggs) are CDs owned by us at WHUS, but the fifth one by the Del McCoury Band is a set of music recorded live at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz Festival and is only available online. Congratulations to all of the nominees.

Finally, a good many of you called in with requests this week -- thanks!

While Jim & Marti join you in the Cafe next Sunday, I'd like to invite you to join me for a Tuesday AM fill-in at WHUS. From 10AM until noon, I plan to play a good portion of Bluegrass & Classic Country music. Please join me if you can!

Have a fine week, and stay warm -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 1/18/2009

Hi Folks,

It was a snowy day in Connecticut, and it seemed many of you were at home listening to the radio based on the large number of phone calls from folks making requests, winning tickets to local concerts, and just to talk about the music we played.

We aired several songs because of anniversaries and other events such as the songs by Lonesome Standard Time and Ross Nickerson because our recently-departed friend Butch Baldassari picked mandolin on the tracks. We played a concert recording from Flatt & Scruggs (they played at Nixon's inauguration 40 years ago), Laurie Lewis (her partner Tom Rozum has a birthday this week), Bill Emerson (birthday this week), and Art Stamper (died 23 January 2005).

We introduced some new music, too, from the Songs From The Road Band, Audie Blaylock and Redline, Whitetop Mountain Band, Gena Britt Tew, and The Infamous Stringdusters.

The Steep Canyon Rangers, ShoreGrass, and Shady Creek all have concerts in the area this week, so we played tracks from their CDs.

Speaking of concerts, we have the amazing fortune to have a large number of great bands we can hear live in this area. This will not continue forever, or even many more weeks, unless we all make it worthwhile to the promoters who put their time and money on the line to bring this music to us. Please get out and attend the concerts. You will have a great time, the music is the best, and we will be able to enjoy live bluegrass music in the future.

That's the news and soapbox for this week. Amy will be with you next week.

Jim & Marti

A way to save a dollar or two for Joe Val...

If you've not yet purchased a ticket for the Boston Bluegrass Union-sponsored Joe Val BG Festival -- which happens February 13-15 in Framingham, MA -- you may wish to do so before the end of the day today, January 15th. These days, especially, saving a dollar or two is a great idea, so why not take advantage of the "early bird" discount? For more information, click here.

This 24th annual addition of the Joe Val Festival features a terrific lineup, including Bradley Walker, the Steep Canyon Rangers, Dry Branch Fire Squad, NewFound Road, the Special Consensus, the Claire Lynch Band, the Kruger Brothers Bluegrass Project, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Charlie Sizemore Band, the Josh Williams Band, Bobby Osborne & the Rocky Top X-Press, and Dailey & Vincent. In addition, a host of terrific New England (& New York) BG bands will be taking the stage, including the Old Time Bluegrass Singers, Wilf Clark & the Misty Mountaineers, Straight Drive, and the Bluegrass Gospel Project.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/11/2009

After 2 1/2 hours of relative calm on Sunday's show, we had a whole lot of activity toward the end of my first Bluegrass Cafe for 2009. We had arranged to talk to Woody Platt of the Steep Canyon Rangers earlier in Sunday's program, but the best-laid plans...well, it just didn't work out at the scheduled time. No problems, though -- we just went on with the show, and reminded folks about the upcoming SCR show at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center on January 22nd. A bit after 6:30PM, we had a second chance to get Woody on the air...and so we did. Hope you enjoyed our little talk -- and, of course, please get out to see the Rangers in East Hartford on 1/22.

Sunday's show also included several tunes played in celebration of the 85th birthday of one Earl Eugene Scruggs, who was born on January 6, 1924. To say that Earl's a Bluegrass legend almost seems a bit of an understatement. Mr. Scruggs has a brand new CD out on Rounder Records ("The Ultimate Collection: Live At The Ryman"), and he continues to play on the CDs of more than one or two other folks (the latest recordings by Ricky Skaggs and Tom T. Hall are two recent examples). We don't really NEED an excuse to play music by Earl on the BG Cafe, but celebrating an 85th birthday is a big deal -- why not mark the occasion with a bit of celebration?

On a sad note, we also played an instrumental called "Stallin'" by the Weary Hearts. This fine mandolin tune was written and played by Butch Baldassari, who died on January 10th after suffering from cancer for the last year or so.

Thanks for joining me for Sunday's show -- make sure you listen in next Sunday for Jim & Marti.

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 1/4/2009

First "Cafe" of the year didn't have a theme other than to bring some great bluegrass music to you. We tried to play lesser-heard tracks from familiar artists, and perhaps some some tunes from folks you have not heard before.

We also gave away five bluegrass CDs on this show, and you kept Marti busy on the phones throughout. Thank you for your devoted listening!
