"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/28/2021

Homemade edition #48 of our Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole lot of fine Bluegrass music -- as you would expect, right?  Hope were you able to join us for this last Sunday edition for the month of March 2021.

As we often do, we had a couple of birthdays to celebrate this week.  In addition to those of Bluegrassers Phil Leadbetter and Dale Perry, we celebrated Bluegrass Hall of Famer Paul Williams (born March 30, 1935), and several Bluegrass-style versions of songs from the late Country Music Hall of Famer, William Orville "Lefty" Frizzell (March 31, 1928 - July 19, 1975).

If you weren't able to listen to the show today, we sure hope you'll be able to tune in next Sunday afternoon -- Easter Sunday, already! -- for a very special Bluegrass Gospel Hour.

Have a wonderful week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/21/2021

Songs of Spring -- that's how we started this Sunday's edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!  Hope you were able to tune in, as for the first time in two weeks, we could be heard during our "normal" time of 4-7PM on Sunday afternoon.  Yay!

In addition to songs about Spring, we also heard a whole bunch of newer Bluegrass during this Sunday's broadcast, with selections from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, Missy Armstrong, Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford, and a band called Magnolia Drive.

And there were a couple more birthdays to celebrate, as well, including those of

David Grisman and the late John Starling, as well as Country Music Hall of Famer, Carl Smith (who was celebrated by playing several Bluegrass versions of his 1950s hits).  We also remembered the late Peg Chase, who was a fixture on the New England Bluegrass festival scene for many years before relocating to Idaho several years ago.

Hope you were able to join us, but if not, please try to tune in next Sunday afternoon - 4-7PM.

Until then, have a great week -- and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/14/2021

Another March Sunday -- more extra innings for UConn Baseball!  Our Bluegrass Cafe began four hours later than the normal 4PM start time on Sunday afternoon, but still, we were happy to present some really excellent Bluegrass music, including several of my favorite tunes, of course!

As March 14th happens to be my birthday, I (naturally) included lots of music from some of my Bluegrass favorites -- big surprise there, huh?  :)  We also included birthday tunes from the late Bob Paisley and the former IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, Kristin Scott Benson, as well as the late Raymond Fairchild, Tim O'Brien, and Ronnie
McCoury
.

There was a set of music from some women of Bluegrass, as we celebrated International Women's Day on March 8th, and we included a few newer songs from recently released or forthcoming projects from several acts, including Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Matt Dudman, Rock Hearts, Greg Blake, Carolyn Eyerly, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

The hope is that next Sunday's show will air from 4-7PM, but we shall see what happens.  Check out our Bluegrass Cafe Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe) for the latest info.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/7/2021

Though our Bluegrass Cafe aired at a slightly different time this week, we were still able to get three hours of top-notch Bluegrass music on to our WHUS airwaves.  While the show on March 7th was supposed to air from 6-9PM, there were extra innings for UConn Baseball that day, so our show didn't start until 8PM.  We apologize for the inconvenience, but in a way, it's nice to know that UConn sports have returned a bit  -- it almost makes the world somewhat "normal."  Our March 14th show will also be impacted by a UConn Baseball broadcast, and is scheduled to air from 6-9PM instead of our usual 4-7PM.  Sure hope you can join us!

Whether or not you got to listen to the March 7th show, it included a bit of newer music from performers such as Greg Blake, Nothin' Fancy, Colebrook Road, the Wilson Banjo Co., and Carolyn Eyerly.  There was still room for some classic music, too, of course!

We had a couple of mid-March birthdays to celebrate, too, so there was music from
Norman Blake, Rickie Simpkins (via the Virginia Squires), and Cia Cherryholmes.  We also included several songs from IBMA Award-winning bassist, Marshall Wilborn, who happens to be an excellent songwriter, as well.

Be sure to tune in once again next Sunday, again at the (sports-induced) later time of 6-9PM.

Until then, have a great week!

Amy O.

Live Bluegrass on the Internet!

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe (airing at a special time on both Sunday, March 7th and Sunday, March 14th -- 6-9PM instead of 4-7PM), we mentioned a few Bluegrass shows/events that are coming up and will be available for you to view online.  Does this replace going to an in-person event?  Nope.  Is a livesteam show a very excellent substitute as we continue to work our way through these COVID days?  Absolutely!  Here's what you should know:

  • Sunday, March 7th -- 8PM Eastern -- Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers
Free performance streamed at Southern Door Community Auditorium or via the band's Facebook page.

  • Saturday, March 27th - 4-9PM -- Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass (plus the Blades Of Grass, Acoustic Turnpike, Homestead, and Free Range)
Free show sponsored by Wilmington (Delaware) Bluegrass.  Join them directly online (www.wilmingtonwintergrass.org) or via Facebook.

  • Saturday, March 27th - 1PM -- "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" CD release livestream event featuring four bands:  Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, the Isaacs, and the Caleb Daugherty Band.  The CD being released supports a new book of the same title edited by Fred Bartenstein and Curtis Ellison, and published in January 2021 by the University of Illinois Press.  Ticket price is $14 (watchpulling.tv) or via Facebook.

In addition to these free shows, the always-popular Gibson Brothers are appearing at two ticketed events over the next few weeks.

  • Friday, March 12th -- 8PM -- Emelin Theatre
Ticket and streaming info are here.  Per the Gibsons' Facebook page, this will be a live concert from Leigh's house featuring Eric, Leigh, and Mike Barber

Looks like there will be another Gibson Brothers show (Gibson trio?) for Caffe Lena on April 11th.  More info will follow.

In all likelihood, you will continue to see a lot of these virtual shows made available until things really open up again, so be sure to check out the shows when you can.

As a bonus, here's a link to a February 21st live Spinney Brothers show broadcast on Facebook:  https://fb.watch/44OLe20t4j/
