"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/17/2008

While Jim, Marti, and a whole lot of other folks were enjoying the live BG happenings at the Joe Val Festival this past weekend, I got to "mind the store," as it were, playing two hours of classic country tunes from 2-4PM during Jim & Marti's Red Rooster Party, followed by three big hours of the BG during Bluegrass Cafe. Perhaps you got to tune in a bit on your way home from Framingham? If you attended Joe Val this year, feel free to post a comment here and let us know what you thought. Who was your favorite (or even least favorite) band?

As for me, a bit of a family medical emergency only allowed me to see one band at Joe Val, but it was a very good one: Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper. Watching those guys play music together is a joy, no doubt about it.

On the Cafe, we featured a few BG covers of tunes written by Whisperin' Bill Anderson. There was no special reason for this -- it just seemed like a good time to honor one of country music's greatest songwriters. We also included a bit of Tom T. Hall, who was announced this past week as one of the 2008 inductees in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Check out the Cafe next Sunday -- Jim & Marti will be with you.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 2/10/2008

Goodness gracious, what a show! Not only did we have a great music day, but I got to interview Graham Sharp, the banjo picker and main songwriter for the Steep Canyon Rangers. The Rangers will be performing in Fairfield CT 14 Feb and at the Joe Val Festival in Framingham MA Saturday 16 Feb. I know where I'm going to be.

Marti sat out this week to keep out of the weather, but I tried to make up for her absence with the music by featuring more songs from the Bluegrass Unlimited survey than usual. Our featured band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, has two songs on the February chart. I also featured more bluegrass music from our local bands like Monty McClanahan Project, Shady Creek, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, ShoreGrass, and Evergreen.

Thanks for listening!

Jim

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/3/2008

At the outset, we were unsure of how many folks would be listening to Sunday's show, as we had a bit of "competition" in the form of the Super Bowl. We're happy to report, though, that some folks called in to say they'd be watching the game with the volume off AND listening to the radio. That suits us just fine! Unfortunately, it wasn't a great day for the Patriots, but that's another story, I suppose...

Anyhow, we got a chance on Sunday to listen a bit to three great new CDs, including the edgy sounds of The SteelDrivers' self-titled debut on Rounder, as well as the always-wonderful Blue Highway with their Rounder recording, Through The Window Of A Train. In addition, there is a great new duet recording from Chris Brashear & Peter McLaughlin called So Long Arizona. While that music isn't really hard-driving Bluegrass, it's very enjoyable, nonetheless. Be assured that you'll be hearing lots more from all three of these recordings in future weeks at the Bluegrass Cafe.

We also listened to a track from a local band who has a forthcoming recording project. This group is called Second Circle Bluegrass, and we were pleased to share their music with you.

Join Jim & Marti for a big Cafe show next week, as Jim will be talking to Graham Sharp of the Steep Canyon Rangers 'round about 5PM on February 10th. The Rangers are big favorites of us BG folks at WHUS, and they'll be making two big appearances in New England over the next couple of weeks, with shows in Fairfield, CT on February 14th and then, the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in Framingham on February 16th. Who says there's nothing good about winter? Tune in Sunday to hear Jim with Graham -- I know I'll be listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 1/27/2008

We had another enjoyable afternoon at the Cafe bringing you our mix of the best of new bluegrass music as well as the classics. We have been getting enthusiastic response to the local music we have been playing recently, and this show was no exception with songs from Shady Creek, Amy Gallatin, Bear Bridge Band, ShoreGrass, and the Old Time Bluegrass Singers.

Keep on supporting the bluegrass music.

Amy will be with you Sunday the 3rd. I heard there was some kind of ball game supposed to be on Tee Vee that day, but I'm sure your radios will be on WHUS for the bluegrass soundtrack!
