"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/30/2023

We celebrated the original Carter Family during this day's Bluegrass Cafe.  A.P., his wife, Sara, and her cousin, Maybelle first recorded for Ralph Peer on August 1, 1927, so we celebrated that event with 60+ minutes' worth of Bluegrass covers from the Carter Family Songbook.  Where would we be without their music?

And, as promised, here are a couple of reading ideas for books if you would like to learn more about the Carter Family:

  • Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?:  The Carter Family And Their Legacy In American Music by Mark Zwonitzer & Charles Hirschberg (Simon & Schuster, 2004)
  • The Carter Family:  Don't Forget This Song by Frank M. Young & David Lasky (Abrams Comic Arts, 2012)
We included a bit of new or recent music from Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, Alan Munde, and the Kody Norris Show.  In addition, we shared new music from a couple of performers who will soon be featured at the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Goshen, CT:  Darin & Brooke Aldridge, the Henhouse Prowlers, and East Nash Grass.

Hope you have a great week!  We'll look forward to having you join us once again next Sunday from 4-7PM for our Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/23/2023

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated July birthdays of members of both the Bluegrass Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame (and in one notable case, the celebrant was a member of both Halls).

Most notably, we belatedly celebrated the 90th birthday of a wonderful member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, Bobby Hicks.  We shared music from Bobby's earliest recordings with Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, as well as from the Bluegrass Album Band, Ricky Skaggs's country band, Bobby's solo recording, and a tune or two from his most recent band, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks, & Asheville Bluegrass.  There was a nice write-up about Mr. Hicks's 90th birthday party posted in Bluegrass Today.  If you'd like to read it, please click here.

We also remembered three other important figures in the world of Bluegrass and country music:  the late Charlie Louvin (July 17, 1927 - January 26, 2011);  Bluegrass and Country Music Hall of Famer, Ricky Skaggs (born July 18, 1954); and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Alison Krauss (born July 23, 1971).  We shared lots of songs from the Louvin Brothers Songbook performed in a Bluegrass style, several tunes from Ricky's lengthy career, and a gospel tune from a young Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Can't forget to mention that there was new music, too, most notably from the brand-new recording by Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway ("City Of Gold" on Nonesuch Records).  In addition, we heard recent selections from Alan Munde, Bob & Sarah Amos, Becky Buller with Jim Lauderdale, the Kody Norris Show, Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams, and Special Consensus.

It was a fun show, and we are planning to have another session in our Bluegrass Cafe this coming Sunday from 4-7PM.  Hope you're able to join us!

Amy O.

P.S.  Another reason to tune in on Sunday:  we've got a couple of one-day passes to give away for the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival.  Don't miss it!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/9/2023

The playlist for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was perfect for a lazy, summer Sunday.  We started off by belatedly remembered some important early July historical events in song (the disappearance of Amelia Earhart's airplane on July 2, 1937, as well as three songs remembering the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg).

We were delighted to give away a couple of day passes to this coming weekend's Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill, New York.  In anticipation, we played music from some of the Grey Fox featured performers for 2023, including the Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush, the Dan Tyminski Band, and the Dry Branch Fire Squad, to name a few.  Congratulations to our winners!

There was a little bit of newer music to share, too, including a brand-new single from the trio of
Greg Blake, Rebekah Speer, and Jeff Brown, and a completely new recording from the Connecticut duo of Amy Gallatin and Roger Williams.  Recent music was represented, too, with songs by (Kristin Scott and Wayne) Benson, Retro 78, the Kody Norris Show, Rock Hearts, and Still Pickin'.

And we couldn't forget to remember two more Bluegrass performers who died too soon in the month of June:  band leader Mark Kuykendall (October 17, 1962 - June 19, 2023) and musician and arranger John Miller (February 18, 1974 - June 22, 2023).

Hope you're having a wonderful week!  We'll see you again on Sunday afternoon at 4PM for another Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/2/2023

The Bluegrass world was dealt a terrible blow over the last few days of June when not just one but two Bluegrass mandolin-playing legends passed away within four days of each other.  Both Jesse McReynolds (July 9, 1929 - June 23, 2023) and Bobby Osborne (December 7, 1931 - June 27, 2023) were innovative stylists on the mandolin, long-time members of the Grand Ole Opry, and each were the remaining brothers from their respective brother acts in which their legends were sealed.  It is difficult to know that these gentlemen are no longer with us, but how grateful we are that they left us so many wonderful years of recordings for us to enjoy forever.  We easily filled most of our program with music from Jesse and Bobby's careers, and we'll continue to hear their great music in future weeks of our Bluegrass Cafe.

On a show that aired two days before America's 247th birthday, we had to share a few patriotic selections, as well -- all performed in a Bluegrass style.

And we included new music from Becky Buller with Jim Lauderdale, Retro 78, and Authentic Unlimited.

Finally, a program note:  if you tuned in to the show on Sunday, June 25th, you probably noticed that Bluegrass Cafe was not on the air.  In truth, we started the show just fine, but about six songs in, the power went out on a good portion of the UConn campus, including the Student Union building, from which we broadcast.  There was no way to get back on the air during our airtime on Sunday the 25th.  In 30+ years of broadcasting, I've never had that happen before, so let's hope it doesn't repeat itself anytime soon.

Have a wonderful week, and we'll see you again next Sunday, July 9th.  Don't forget, too:  we will have Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival tickets to give away!
