"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/31/2021

One week after the passing of the great Roland "Sonny" Osborne (October 24, 1937 - October 24, 2021), during this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we remembered his life and legacy with a whole lot of his music:  songs he recorded during his long, award-winning career with his brother, Bobby; his sister, Louise; with Red Allen; and while he was a teenage member of Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys.  There will never be another Sonny Osborne, that's for certain.  In recent years, if you've not been reading his "Ask Sonny Anything" column in Bluegrass Today, you owe it to yourself to go back and read through the archives.  To do that, follow this link ~ and enjoy!

Today also happens to be Halloween, so on what other day would it be better to play spooky stories-in-song?  To that end, we played more than a dozen songs featuring tales of ghostly girls, ghostly men, even ghostly trains.  We even through in some spooky, unexplained lights, and some creepy footsteps.  Hope you've had a happy Halloween with more emphasis on the treats than the tricks!

Please consider joining me once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.  Until then, have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/24/2021

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe started out as one with no particular agenda or direction, except that we planned to play a few songs from the catalog of Country Music Hall of Famer Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones, whose 108th birthday would have been celebrated on October 20th.  By the time the show was over, we'd played several songs in honor of Doyle Lawson, who had announced that his retirement from the road would happen one year earlier than originally announced (end of 2021 vs. end of 2022).  We'd also learned while playing birthday songs for this week that the great Sonny Osborne, who would have celebrated his 84th birthday on October 29th had possibly died on this day.  I say "possibly" as there were too many conflicting sources of Facebook information during the time the news originally came.  It was all very confusing, but in the end, it seems that Sonny did, indeed, pass earlier this afternoon.  We will work this week on a program to honor the legendary music of this incredible performer.  Rest in peace, Sonny.

Hope you were able to join us for all or some of today's show.  Please consider joining us once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/17/2021

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe included music celebrating a couple of mid-October birthdays, a bit of newer music, and tributes to two important members of the Bluegrass community.

The week just past was a rough one for friends and fans of the great
Phil Leadbetter, who died at the age of 59 on October 14th.  "Uncle Phil" was a big personality who was a multi-time cancer survivor, as well as a bandleader and, by all accounts, a fine person.  He will be missed.  A day before the passing of Phil Leadbetter, Kerry Hay -- the founder of Hay Holler Records -- died at the age of 89.  In the 1990s, Mr. Hay's record label roster included lots of fine performers, including Big Country Bluegrass, the Gillis Brothers, the all-star-packed Bluegrass Band, and the Gibson Brothers.

We shone a small spotlight on the co-recipient of the 2021 Steve Martin Banjo Prize, Alan Munde.  Congratulations to him!

New music featured on Sunday included selections from Danny Paisley & the Southern GrassAmanda Cook, Tammy Rogers & Thomm Jutz, Colebrook Road, Sideline, Junior Sisk, Daryl Mosley, Balsam Range, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Jeremy Stephens, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and Merle Monroe, and a selection from the "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" collection.

Hope you're able to join us once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.  We'll be looking for you!

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/3/2021

Robert Fraker at Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival

Our first
Bluegrass Cafe of October 2021 featured music from some of the 2021 International Bluegrass Music Association award winners , as well as music from the three newly-minted members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, and birthday tributes to several performers.  Most notably, we shared seven songs from the pen of a good friend gone too soon:  Robert Fraker (October 1, 1946 - May 2, 2017).  Hope you were able to join us for all or part of the broadcast.

The annual gathering known as WoB (World of Bluegrass) took place this past week in Raleigh, NC.  While I wasn't an in-person attendee of the festivities this year, I was able to follow along virtually at some events that were posted on either the IBMA Facebook page or the group's YouTube.  To that end, we played some music from quite a few IBMA Award winners for 2021, and we mentioned the others.

We also shared music from some of the performers who will be in Vermont next weekend at the first-time-ever Jenny Brook Minifest.  This annual event normally takes place at the end of June, but COVID meeting restrictions cancelled the big festival this year.  This smaller festival is "mini" in name only, as there will be a load of top-notch performers there, including IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year Danny Paisley, as well as the Po' Ramblin' Boys, the Feinberg Brothers, and others.  For more info, visit this website.

As I will be in Vermont next weekend, our Bluegrass Cafe will be recorded during this week, and will air for you on Sunday afternoon.  Hope you'll consider joining us, if you can.

Have a great week!

Amy O.
