"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/25/2007

Sunday's show featured a lot of brand new BG music that has arrived at WHUS over the past couple of weeks, including tunes from projects by the Special Consensus, Casey & Chris & the Two-Stringers, Donna Hughes, Joe Ross, John Starling & Carolina Star, Ben Greene, and Pine Mountain Railroad. We also took a few minutes to play some "vintage" BG from Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys, circa 1971, as well as the Gibson Brothers' seldom-heard 1994 recording, "Underneath A Harvest Moon," and some great Dobro/resonator guitar work from New England's own Roger Williams. Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way....

Basketball Big East tournament schedule permitting, we'll see you in the Cafe next Sunday from 4-7PM.

Bear Bridge Band at Country Corner -- Saturday, February 24th

The Bear Bridge Band* (a/k/a "The Band Who Won't Go Away") makes another stop on their 2007 "tour" on Saturday, February 24th at the Country Corner Coffee House, 11 North Main Street, South Hadley, MA. Showtime is 8PM. For more information, call (413)467-9394 or visit Dave Helman's Country Corner website.

*While I have no financial interest in this band, I should mention that my brother, Dave, has been a member of Bear Bridge for several years. While they don't play nearly as many shows as they did in the past, they do continue to get a very good reception whenever they do emerge from "retirement." Please get out and see them, if you're so inclined.

Another show happening tomorrow night is taking place in eastern CT. For those who may not wish to travel to South Hadley, why not check out the show being presented at the Killingly Grange, located at the corner of Dog Hill Road and Route 101 in East Killingly, CT. Bands on the bill include Charter Oak and Sugar Creek. Doors open at 6PM; showtime is 7PM. For more information, call (860)564-1018.

'Tis always good to support live BG whenever you can....please get out there.

Jerry Salley in the Songwriter Chat Room - Tuesday, February 20th

For the February installment of her Songwriter Chat Room, Candi Sawyer has recruited someone who has had great success writing country, gospel, and plenty of bluegrass tunes: Jerry Salley. Jerry will be in the chat room tonight - Tuesday, February 20th - starting at 8PM to offer tips and advice to all aspiring songwriters. To visit the chat room, go to www.bluegrassguide.com, and follow the links from there. You can read Candi's email below about Jerry and the chat, but suffice it to say, Jerry Salley has written or co-written plenty of great BG tunes that have been recorded by the likes of the Seldom Scene (one of my favorites, "Breaking New Ground"), Rhonda Vincent, Alecia Nugent, the Del McCoury Band, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and many others. Jerry's got a new CD of his own called "New Songs, Old Friends" that we've been playing a bit on the BG Cafe of late. Of course, I'd be remiss not to mention that Jerry is also a co-writer of one of my favorite BG tunes from 2006: the excellent "1946" from David Peterson & 1946. If you can't make it to the chat room tonight, I'm sure Candi will be posting the chat transcript sometime in the future. Visit the BG Guide website for more information, or see Candi's note following this message.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 2/18/2007

The entire Bluegrass Cafe crew was firmly encamped at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival this weekend and having a grand time experiencing all things bluegrass. The event won the award for IBMA event of the year in 2006, and 2007 should be no different.

Jim & Marti gave up the Sunday activities at Joe Val (although Jim did jam past 3:00 am Sunday morning) to bring you some good music to tune in on your drive back from the festival. Hope you enjoyed!

Amy was taking a day off and Jim was on an airplane to the midwest, so Red Rooster Party co-host Marti brought the Bluegrass Music to you Sunday. A side benefit was the different songs she brought to the show. Hope you enjoyed.

Marti will be back on Sunday, 18 February, for sure. If I can be dragged away from the Joe Val Festival early, I may join her. If you are at the festival, we hope to see you there.

A note from Gerry Katz about the Joe Val Festival....

Folks -

The Joe Val Bluegrass Festival is rapidly approaching, and there have been questions as to whether or not single-day tickets are available. BBU President Gerry Katz sent out an email this AM about this very subject. I'm including his email message below, but here's a quick synopsis: weekend festival tickets are SOLD OUT, but there are a few day-only festival tickets remaining for both Friday and Sunday. In addition, it seems the Gibson Brothers have been added to the Friday night lineup. For more details on the Joe Val Festival lineup, click here. Read on for Gerry's note:

Greetings from the Boston Bluegrass Union -

Tickets for next week's Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, February 16-18 at the Sheraton Framingham are now in short supply. We are sold out of weekend tickets and have a small quantity of Friday-only and Sunday-only tickets available. Best bet would be to purchase your tickets online now as these will likely be gone by the start of the festival. Both days feature great Main Stage lineups including Chris Thile and the Gibson Brothers headlining on Friday, and Doyle Lawson and David Davis headlining on Sunday. Plus, we've added some workshops to Friday night.

Performance schedules for Main Stage, Workshop, Film Fest and Vendor Showcase are now online, too. We have some slots remaining in the Master Classes scheduled for Friday prior to the start of the festival. Check out all the details at
http://www.bbu.org/

See you next week,

Gerry

WHUS Spring Schedule....

The WHUS Spring Schedule has been announced, and we're happy to tell you that both Red Rooster Party and Bluegrass Cafe will continue to be heard at their normal times:

Red Rooster Party - Sundays, 2-4PM
Bluegrass Cafe - Sundays, 4-7PM
Marti joins you in the Cafe this Sunday. Thanks for listening!

We think there may be some show preemptions with Red Rooster and BG Cafe next week -- Marti will be on the air with you for whatever portion of BG Cafe airs (assuming the station schedule doesn't change us to a new day -- we'll keep you posted).
