"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/27/2011 RADIOTHON WEEK #2

Radiothon 2011 is now history at WHUS, and I'm happy to report that once again, our awesome listeners helped us reach our two-week $3,000 goal. Hooray! I'm not 100% sure why folks seem to respond so well to the BG Cafe each year, but clearly, there's something very appealing about the BG music, and we certainly can't argue with that. Thanks to each of you who picked up the phone and made a pledge to support the show -- and by extension, WHUS -- over the past two weeks. We're certainly glad to know you're enjoying the show!

This year, we were able to offer lots of great thank-you gifts to folks who pledged to support BG Cafe. In addition to offering the newest recordings from the likes of Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Charlie Sizemore, the Gibson Brothers, and others, we also had some great CDs from the Boxcars, Edgar Loudermilk, Balsam Range, the Rick Lang gospel recording, and a whole bunch more. Big thanks to Compass Records, Crossroads/Mountain Home, Mountain Fever Records, Mountain Roads Recordings, Patuxent Music, Rounder, Rural Rhythm, and Sugar Hill, as well as performers David Peterson and the Spinney Brothers. In addition, we had a few tickets and passes to local events to offer as thank-you gifts donated to us by the Podunk Bluegrass Festival, Chris Wuerth of GuitarTownCT Productions, and the Canterbury Historical Society.

Finally, special thanks to our great and helpful phone operators this year: the ever-dependable (and always enthusiastic) Clyde Proch & Scott Farrar, as well as my mother, Eleanor Orlomoski. We were happy to have WHUS staff members, James & Cathy Ward, around for Radiothon, as well, and longtime WHUS "Off The Beaten Track" show host, Dan Grieder, was a tremendous help, too.

I'll join you once more this coming Sunday beginning at 4PM, and I can assure you that you'll be hearing LOTS of great BG music (and hearing very little talk). Thanks again!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/20/2011 RADIOTHON WEEK #1

Hooray!! We survived week #1 of Radiothon at WHUS! For the last couple of years, the "Powers That Be" at WHUS have set a very high two-week show goal for the BG Cafe. Why do they have such high expectations for us? Well, probably because our most outstanding - and clearly VERY intelligent - listeners have come through for us with many generous pledges in recent years. This year is shaping up to be no exception, it seems. While we have a lofty 4-digit show goal for the two-week timeframe of Radiothon, the pledges we received today brought us just over halfway to our goal. Thanks to everyone who took the time to make a pledge, and keep our fine telephone operators pretty busy for the afternoon.

We were delighted to offer some outstanding musical ways of saying thanks for your pledges today. While the most popular choices seemed to be the most recent recording by the ever-popular Gibson Brothers and the brand-spanking-new CD from Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, we are very grateful to all of the record labels for offering us some top-notch recordings for our listeners. Special thanks to Ty Gilpin of Mountain Home and Mark Hodges of Mountain Fever, as well as Sammy Passamano from Rural Rhythm, Karl Cooler of Mountain Home Recordings, and Tom Mindte of Patuxent Music.

For the second year in a row, each person who makes a pledge to WHUS and the BG Cafe during Radiothon will also be entered into a drawing for which the prize will be two books: one book is Richard D. Smith's biography of Bill Monroe, Can't You Hear Me Callin' : The Life Of Bill Monroe, Father of Bluegrass. In this year that marks the 100th birthday of the Father of Bluegrass, this seems like an appropriate read. The second book is a photo book, filled with pictures taken by the Boston-area photographer, Henry Horenstein titled, Honky Tonk : Portraits of Country Music, 1972-1981. Mr. Horenstein shot many an album cover for Rounder Records in their early years, and those photos and more are included in this fine book. Some of the BG folks pictured include the cover subject, Don Stover, Lester Flatt, Ralph Stanley, Curley Ray Cline, and - my personal favorites - the Johnson Mountain Boys. The drawing for these two books will be held at the conclusion of Radiothon -- so give us a call on March 27th, and good luck!

The playlist today consisted entirely of music that was available for premiums. Even though there was a lot more talk than music from Jim and me, we appreciate your patience, and we hope to be with you again next Sunday for Week #2 of Radiothon in a (we hope) non-sports preempted radio show. We'll see how it goes...

In the meantime, thanks again!!

It's coming...Radiothon 2011!

As you've likely heard from us over the past couple of weeks, the next two Sundays of BG Cafe (sports preemptions, notwithstanding) are going to be devoted to our annual fundraising campaign at WHUS known as Radiothon. We'll be looking for your financial support for the station, and while neither Jim nor I really enjoy asking for money from our listeners, we surely do have some great ways to say "thank you." In addition to lots of station goodies (shirts, etc.), we'll have several great CDs from which you may choose -- and believe me, there are A LOT of great CD offerings this year!

Here's a partial list:
  • Balsam Range - "Trains I Missed" (Mountain Home)
  • The Boxcars - "The Boxcars" (Mountain Home)
  • J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams - "Old Friends Get Together" (Mountain Home)
  • Darrell Webb Band - "Bloodline" (Rural Rhythm)
  • Rodney Dillard & the Dillard Band - "I Wish Life Was Like Mayberry" (Rural Rhythm)
  • Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie - "Southern" (Rural Rhythm)
  • The Expedition Show - "The Expedition Show" (Mountain Fever)
  • Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford - "Dogwood Winter" (Rural Rhythm)
  • The Hagar's Mountain Boys - "Forever Yours" (Mountain Fever)
  • Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver - "Help Is On The Way" (Mountain Home)
  • Edgar Loudermilk - "Roads Travelled" (Mountain Fever)
  • David Peterson - "Comin' On Strong" (Self-Produced)
  • David Peterson & 1946 - "David Peterson & 1946" (Self-Produced)
  • David Peterson & 1946 - "The Howling Blue Winds" (Self-Produced)
  • Lou Reid & Carolina - "Sounds Like Heaven To Me" (Rural Rhythm Christian)
  • Spinney Brothers - "If I Were Your Brother" (Self-Produced)
  • Spinney Brothers - "Here At The Cross" (Self-Produced)
  • Various - "Look To The Light: Songs Of Faith From The Pen Of Rick Lang" (Rural Rhythm Christian)
For some of the above CDs, we have multiple copies to offer -- for others, there is just one copy, so if you see something you like, pledging early is advised. We'll break it all down for you on Sunday...
We're excited to offer you an opportunity to pledge for these brand new (or nearly brand new) recordings, as well:
  • Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper - "Fired Up" (Rounder)
  • The Gibson Brothers - "Help My Brother" (Compass Records)
  • Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers - "Rare Bird Alert" (Rounder)
  • Charlie Sizemore - "Heartache Looking For A Home" (Rounder)
  • Larry Sparks - "Almost Home" (Rounder)

For the last several years, BG Cafe has been the most listener-supported music program on the air at WHUS during Radiothon. We think it's great that so many folks support the Bluegrass music, and you KNOW we'd love to be #1 again in 2011. If you can help us, please do! We'll hope to hear from you beginning at 4PM this Sunday...and THANKS!!!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 3/13/2011

Hi Folks.

Thanks to an opening just prior to this week's Bluegrass Cafe, we were able to bring you four full hours of great bluegrass music.

Following the opening theme we started the show with an old 78 recording of Molly O'Day performing "Matthew Twenty Four" which seemed fitting following the news from Japan.

Grandpa Jones then gave us his annual opinion of "Daylight Savings Time" which makes more sense to me the older I get.

We heard new music from Larry Cordle, James Reams, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Cedar Hill, The Gibson Brothers, The Radio Gang, Larry Sparks, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers, Charlie Sizemore, and Jay Armsworthy.

Besides the Molly O'Day record, I dug up some great classic music from the Heritage Corner archives including songs from The Stanley Brothers from the 1961 Chicago Folk Festival, Red Allen, The McCormick Brothers (photo left), The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Reno & Smiley, a powerful duet home recording from the late Clarence Green & Donald Scott, and a rare Bill Monroe instrumental.

This was the last regular show before two weekends of WHUS Radiothon, so it was even sweeter having four hours to bring great bluegrass to the Southern New England airwaves.

Speaking of Radiothon, it runs 19-27 March, so you will have two Sundays of Bluegrass Cafe with both Amy and me as we remind you of the great bluegrass music we bring you every week, and give you an opportunity to show your financial support to WHUS for allowing us to do so. We will have quite a few great thank you gifts available including CDs for those who support the show.

Amy and I hope to hear from during the next two Sundays, and we will be playing music from some of our thank-you CDs.

Jim Beaver

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/6/2011

Most of the time, I like to think that I'm a fairly calm, go-with-the-flow person. On Sunday, though, I felt more like the show was going about 90 miles an hour, and I just never could quite catch up. I suppose the rushed feeling came partially from the fact that it's once again basketball tournament time at UCONN, and with that, there's always the possibility of sports programming preempting the various music programs on the airwaves at WHUS. Generally, if we start the BG Cafe a few minutes later than the scheduled 4PM, I'm fine with that. On Sunday, though, I was expecting a call from Michael Cleveland around 4:30, and once it got to be 4:25 and we hadn't started the BG Cafe yet...well, that kind of made me a bit nervous, I guess. In the end, everything worked out okay, but there were definitely a few anxious moments for me, anyway.

So, why were we waiting for Michael Cleveland to call? This award-winning fiddler (named SPBGMA's Fiddle Player of the Year for 2011, and an 8-time IBMA Fiddle Performer of the Year) is coming to Hamden, CT on March 19th, for one thing. If you like your BG music in a more traditional vein, you just can't do much better than Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper. Flamekeeper -- the whole band has won the IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year for the last 4 years -- is tremendous with Mike on the fiddle (naturally), Jesse Brock on the mandolin, Tom Adams on the guitar, Marshall Wilborn on the bass, and now, Charlie Cushman has recently taken over the banjo spot vacated by Jessie Baker (who has gone on to join Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver). If it's not exciting enough that this great band is coming to CT, they're also releasing their second band recording on Rounder Records on March 29th. This CD -- appropriately titled, "Fired Up" -- promises to be a great one, and I can't wait for us to receive it at WHUS. This is just one likable band, so I hope you'll consider making the trip to Hamden on March 19th.

To learn more about the show in Hamden, visit http://www.guitartownct.com/. If you happen to miss that show, though, don't despair because you'll have quite a few opportunities to enjoy Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper in the Northeast over the next few months. They'll be playing upcoming shows in Newburyport, MA, at the Lowell Folk Festival, the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in VT, the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford, the Pemi Valley Bluegrass Festival in Campton, NH, and at Greyfox, as well. If you'd like to learn more about Flamekeeper, visit the band's website: http://www.flamekeeperband.com/. Many thanks to the Hamden show promoter, Chris Wuerth of GuitarTown CT Productions, as he allowed us to give away a couple of single tickets to the March 19th show. Fun!

It was a day for new music, too, and we got to share quite a bit of it from new, only-received-on-Sunday Rounder projects from Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers ("Rare Bird Alert"), Larry Sparks ("Almost Home"), and Sierra Hull ("Daybreak"), as well as the self-titled Mountain Fever Records debut project for the Expedition Show, and Cedar Hill's recording on Blue Circle Records called, "I've Got A Thing About Doors." In addition, we played a single from a forthcoming solo project from Lou Reid & Carolina sideman, Shannon Slaughter, and newer music from the Grascals, Edgar Loudermilk, Charlie Sizemore, and the Gibson Brothers.

Now, a brief promotional word: our annual fundraising campaign known as Radiothon begins at WHUS on March 19th. Assuming there are no basketball preemptions, the two weeks of BG Cafe Radiothon will happen on March 20th and March 27th. We've been making arrangements to offer you some top-notch "thank you" music gifts this year -- in fact, we played tunes from some of those CDs we'll have to offer on Sunday's program. I know that WHUS has already sent out fundraising letters to those who've made a pledge in the past, and the "Powers That Be" would probably like you to make your pledge now before Radiothon officially begins. If you want to do that, go right ahead, but we'd really prefer if you waited to make a pledge until Radiothon actually begins. If you call us during the actual radio program, that's a good indication to us that you're enjoying the show, and you think it's worth your listening time. Over the past couple of years, you folks have made the BG Cafe the most listener-supported music program on the air at WHUS, and while we don't get any special awards or "bonus checks" (a joke -- Jim & I are volunteers at WHUS) if we attain that status again, we just love to have bragging rights to say how generous BG listeners really are! If you mail your pledge early, it's appreciated, but it doesn't get "credited" as support of the BG Cafe. We'll get you more Radiothon info very soon...and THANKS!!

Jim will join you this coming Sunday with lots more of the best in BG. Make plans to join him beginning at 4PM...
