"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/27/2022

In the days before COVID, it seemed like WHUS used to air every single UConn Basketball game that was played, but today, things are not the same.  While we may not experience sports-shortened radio broadcasts so much these days, we still have to deal with the traffic and parking issues that occur on game days when the basketball teams are playing on campus.  Today was one of those days, but COVID has actually provided us with a "fix," of sorts:  we can give recorded shows an "encore" appearance once in a while.  For this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we were both recorded and live:  the first hour was a broadcast first aired on February 28, 2021, and the second two hours were "warts and all" live broadcasts from WHUS.  Hope you enjoyed this "hybrid."

During the show, we celebrated birth anniversaries of two wonderful, very original performers: Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 - May 29, 2012) and John Duffey (March 4, 1934 - December 9, 1997).  There's no better way to celebrate a musician than by sharing his music, and so, we did.  And we could have celebrated a lot more, too, but we'll save that for another Sunday.

New music hit our airwaves today, as well, with brand-new music from the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Rick Lang's new stories-in-song collection, Unlimited Tradition, the Lonesome River Band, Kristy Cox, and Cedar Hill.

Hope you were able to join us, but if not, you'll have another chance in one week.  See you on March 7th!

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/20/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured birthday tributes to two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, two members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, and one Dr. Banjo.  We also included newer music, and some songs recorded 50 years ago today that were the first recordings of one of the most celebrated bands in the history of Bluegrass Music.

We had birthday tributes galore this show, with Bluegrass covers of songs originally performed by two Country Music Hall of Famers who were born one day apart:  Faron Young (February 25, 1932 - December 10, 1996) and Johnny Cash (February 26, 1932 - September 12, 2003).  This week also happens to be the birthday week of two legendary musicians in the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Don Reno (February 21, 1927 - October 16, 1984) and Ralph Stanley (February 25, 1927 - June 23, 2016).  In addition, Pete Wernick celebrates a birthday this week (born February 25, 1946).

In addition, we shared two songs that were the very first recordings made by the Seldom Scene.  Both songs were featured on their 1972 Rebel album, "Act I" and were recorded on February 20, 1972.

If all of that wasn't enough, there was some new (or newish) music by Terry Baucom's Dukes Of Drive, Mike Compton, Shannon Slaughter, Linda Lay, Dale Ann Bradley & Danny Paisley, and Rick Lang.

Hope you were able to join us for all or part of today's Bluegrass Cafe, but if not, you've got another chance coming up next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.  See you then.  😁

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/13/2022

For this week's edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, since it's Valentine's Day Eve, we shared a whole bunch of Bluegrass love songs -- mostly positive ones, but a few more "dysfunctional" songs, too.  Pretty much every facet of the spectrum of love was represented in our love songs today, so that's a good thing.  💓

We also shared several songs in honor of the birth anniversary on February 9th of the Texas Troubadour, Ernest Tubb (February 9, 1914 - September 6, 1984).  Although we know ET was not a "Bluegrass singer," like many of his contemporaries, the music of Ernest Tubb has been covered loads of times in the World of Bluegrass, so it seemed only appropriate to share a few songs.

And we shared a little bit of newer music, too, from the likes of the Edgar Loudermilk Band, a young group of siblings from western Pennsylvania known as Echo Valley, and a new Monroe-centric recording by the great Mike Compton.  Hope you were able to join us.

We'll be looking for you once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  Until then, have a wonderful week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/6/2022

The first
Bluegrass Cafe of February also happened to be our first live-as-it-happens show in a few weeks.  We survived it, and hope you did, too.  :)

During the show, we shared songs from of the winners of the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (or, SPBGMA) Awards which were presented in ceremonies held last week in Nashville.  Among the winners from whom we heard:  the Kody Norris Show, Junior Sisk, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and Donna Ulisse.  Congratulations to all.

We shared new music from some forthcoming releases from Laura Orshaw, Cedar Hill, the Tim Raybon Band, Amanda Cook, and a new "not really band" of all-stars called the No Joke Jimmy's.

And we shared music from some fine performers who would have celebrated birthdays this week including Bluegrass Hall of Famers Red Allen and Donna Stoneman, the great Wilma Lee Cooper, and long-time sideman Paul Brewster.  We also remembered a fine musician who died much too young just one year ago this week:  Aaron "Frosty" Foster.

Hope you heard something you enjoyed during the show today, and that you will consider tuning in once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/30/2022

I'm very delinquent in getting this playlist posted for our last Bluegrass Cafe in January, but better late than never...

The first part of Sunday's show featured several songs in honor of four important members of the Bluegrass community who were all born on February 1st.  Chronologically, they are Del McCoury (1939), Tom Gray (1941), David Parmley (1959), and Jason Carter (1973).  In addition, we remembered the January 31st birthdays of Becky Buller (born 1979) and Lynwood Lunsford (1962).

We also included a little bit of brand-new music from the likes of the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Magnolia Drive, and Junior Sisk.

Hope you will be able to join us for this coming Sunday's live-in-the-studio Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Amy O.
