"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/21/2010

Well, it was another Sunday for me in the Cafe, and, as usual, I enjoyed myself a good bit. Hope you're not completely sick of me yet...

As we've been receiving lots and lots of new BG over the past couple of weeks, we tried to squeeze in a bunch of it on Sunday's show. We didn't do too badly, I don't think, as we heard new (or newER) music from former IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Laurie Lewis, a newer group called Brand New Strings, old-timey-sounding Jim Lloyd & the Skyliners, Clinch Mountain Boy fiddler Dewey Brown, Michael Martin Murphey's second "Bluegrass-ish" CD for Rural Rhythm, and California's Earl Brothers. There are always new titles to add to the mix, so we hope you like hearing 'em.

On Sunday, we also celebrated a couple of birthdays that are happening this coming week: Ralph Stanley, who was born on February 25, 1927, and Johnny Cash (admittedly NOT a Bluegrass performer, although he did sing on a record made by then son-in-law Marty Stuart several years ago), born on February 26, 1932. BTW, if you've not yet had a chance to read Dr. Ralph's recent biography called Man Of Constant Sorrow, you really ought to get to your local library and borrow a copy. It's a very interesting read, and gives a lot of detail about the early career of the Stanley Brothers.

At last weekend's Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, the fine New Hampshire BG band known as White Mountain Bluegrass was honored with one of the BBU Heritage Awards for their 40 years of playing BG around New England and really, all over the world. We shared some fine tunes from the McGees & Co. and will continue to do so.

Two shop notes: at WHUS, we're in the process of finally being reunited with our BG library (the CDs, anyway), and will be able to have full access to them within the next week or two. Hooray! Second, consider yourself "warned" that Radiothon 2010 is on its way. We've been in the process of gathering some fine CDs and things to offer as premiums, and hopefully, we'll be able to entice you to make a pledge to WHUS during our Radiothon weeks (March 14th & March 21st). I think you'll be pleased to see the goodies we're going to be offering, so please be sure to tune in.

And, of course, you'll want to tune in next Sunday when Jim returns to the airwaves at the BG Cafe. I'm sure he's got some great music in store for you...

Have a good week -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/14/2010

From my end of the microphone, it seemed like Sunday's show went by in a whirlwind. I spent the better part of the weekend in Framingham, MA at the very fine (as always) Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, but arrived back in Storrs with time to spare before Sunday's show. Congratulations to the BBU folks for presenting another great festival, especially when illness and injury didn't make the lineup look quite the same as was planned on paper.

In addition to featuring a bit of music by performers who'd appeared at Joe Val over the weekend (Spinney Brothers, Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Sierra Hull, Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass), we included one tune from a brand new CD we'd received this week by a Virginia band -- the Cana Ramblers CD is called, "No Expectations." As it was Valentine's Day, we also tried to include a few happy BG love songs -- 'tis not always an easy task to find such songs, but I think we did okay.

We also took a few moments to celebrate the birthdate of another one of those Country Music Hall of Famers whose music has been covered a good bit in the BG world. This time around our honoree was Ernest Tubb, who was born on February 9, 1914 (and died September 6, 1984). ET was not the world's greatest singer, but something he said in an interview from 1957 really seems like a good goal for all musicians: "I sing because I want to sing." You can't ask anything more than that.

In just one month, it will once again be time for Radiothon at WHUS. We're in the process of trying to pull together some fine CDs to offer our listeners (and supporters) as "thank-you gifts," so we hope you'll be sure to help us out, if you can. We know that the economy is still pretty lousy, but for the last two years, you folks have made the "Bluegrass Cafe" the #1 listener-supported music program at WHUS. Of course, we'd like to retain that distinction for another year, too, so we hope you'll consider making a pledge to WHUS on March 14th and/or March 21st. Thanks!

It looks like I'll be with you once again this coming Sunday for another "Bluegrass Cafe." Please consider joining me....

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/7/2010

Back to three hours for today's BG Cafe. While we couldn't squeeze in quite as many tunes as Jim was able to play on last week's five hour program, we still pumped out a whole lot of great BG tunes. Hope you enjoyed 'em...

In anticipation of next weekend's 25th Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in Framingham, MA, we included a whole bunch of tunes from performers who'll be appearing at this big Boston Bluegrass Union-sponsored event. If you don't yet have a reservation at the Sheraton Framingham (where the event is held), you're out of luck, as the hotel sold out all of its rooms in less than five minutes when reservations were opened up last November. It should be a great festival with lots and lots of top-notch performers, including Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, J.D. Crowe & the New South, the Gibson Brothers, the Spinney Brothers, Sierra Hull & Highway 111, the Josh Williams Band, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, and quite a few more. We hope to see you there!

The big news in the Bluegrass world this week was the release of Dailey & Vincent's new tribute CD to the Statler Brothers (called "Dailey & Vincent Sing The Statler Brothers"). If you've ever seen D&V's live show (or, really, listened to either of their first two Rounder CDs), you KNOW that these guys include LOTS of tunes from the Statler Brothers Songbook in their repertoire. As I've told you plenty of times, I've been a big Statler fan myself for the better part of forever, but I never would have imagined any of their songs being worked up as BG tunes. This new D&V CD is "mighty fine" (to quote the ol' Roadhog), and you can bet you'll be hearing lots more of it on the air in future weeks and months at WHUS. Is it better than the original Statler stuff? Nope...but it is a fabulous tribute to the Statlers from the hottest thing going in the BG world.

The WHUS radio schedule changes once again this Thursday, 2/11, but we hope to remain on the air for our usual Sunday afternoon timeslot. With that in mind, I hope to join you once again next Sunday as I wind down my Joe Val weekend. If you enjoy some classic country sounds combined with your BG, I invite you to join me for my last Tuesday afternoon fill-in this week (2/9) from 1-3PM.

Thanks for listening -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 1/31/2010

Hi Folks,

Bluegrass Cafe is still on a roll with another five-hour show last Sunday because of an opening in the schedule, and I was happy to make the banjos and fiddles ring for most of the afternoon. The requests were prolific.

New music included selections from Josh Williams, Patuxent Partners, Billy Boone Smith, Bill Emerson and Sweet Dixie, Blue Highway, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, Jesse Baker, The Spinney Brothers, Randy Kohrs, Bobby Atkins and the Countrymen, Chris Warner, Dan Menzone, Thomas Wywrot, Nate Leath + Friends, and Carolina Native Sons.

I got a couple of requests for Johnson Mountain Boys music, so I did a special set of live music from that great band.

To mark the sad occasion of their cessation of operations, I programmed a long set of music from the Pinecastle label.

From the Heritage Corner vaults, I dusted off J.E. Mainer from my home town of Concord, NC in 1967, Ralph Stanley from McClure in 1975, and The Stanley Brothers from Ray Davis' Baltimore car lot studio in 1963.

Amy will be making the banjos and fiddles ring next Sunday, so be sure to tune in at our regular time 4-7 pm ET.

We'll be at the Joe Val Festival February 12-14, so perhaps we'll see you there.

Regards,

Jim Beaver
