"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/17/2026

During our May 17th Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated the music and contributions of three important members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame who were all born on May 17th:  the great fiddler Paul Warren (May 17, 1918 - January 12, 1978), the smooth-singing Red Smiley (May 17, 1925 - January 2, 1972), and the delightful Dillards' guitar picker/lead singer, Rodney Dillard (born May 17, 1942).  With relative ease, we could have limited ourselves to ONLY sharing music from these these three on Sunday, but we definitely hit on some of their "hits" in the World of Bluegrass.  Fabulous music from all three -- and there is always more to enjoy.

There was a bit of new music to share from a couple of different performers, including the Kody Norris Show, Newfound Road, the Lonesome River Band, and Dalton Harper (featured on the new CD of songs written by Rick Lang).

And we took another look at some songs featured in the National Bluegrass Survey, this time from the chart of May 2016.  Ten years ago, Bluegrass radio was really loving Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Donna Ulisse, the Kathy Kallick Band, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, the Boxcars, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Big Country Bluegrass, and Sideline.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/10/2026

On Sunday, we celebrated two wonderful events at our Bluegrass Cafe:  Commencement Day at UConn and, of course, Mother's Day!  While we could only wish all UConn graduates a heartfelt congratulations, we did a bit more celebrating of Mothers on Sunday afternoon.  Hope you were able to celebrate the day in a special way, either being honored by your children, celebrating your mother in person, or remembering her with many fond memories.  

As you likely know, there are MANY songs celebrating mothers in the World of Bluegrass.  We included many of those during our broadcast on Sunday from performers as varied as the Gibson Brothers, Reno & Smiley, Kathy Kallick, Lou Reid, the Louvin Brothers, High Fidelity, Lynn Morris, the Lonesome River Band, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, and many others.  

Appropriately, Mother's Day also happened to be the birth anniversary of Maybelle Carter (May 10, 1909 - November 23, 1978) -- who became known as "Mother Maybelle" for many years after the breakup of the original Carter Family.  

A tiny bit of new music also made it onto our playlist for this week, including another new single from the Kody Norris Show, as well as Bryan Sutton with Tommy Emmanuel, Darren Nicholson, and Jaelee Roberts.

Finally, we briefly remembered Evelyn Cox Hobbs - a Grammy Award-winning member of the Cox Family who died on May 6th at the age of 66.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/26/2026

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe had us wandering through many decades of fine Bluegrass selections from the early 1950s through brand-new music.  

In the latter category of "brand-new" or "recent" Bluegrass, we heard from Caroline Owens, Izaak Atlas Schwartz, Doug Rorrer, Alison Brown & Steve Martin, Appalachian Road Show, and the new live recording from Blue Highway.

And we revisited some more now-classic tunes that were featured in the Top 30 of the National Bluegrass Survey according to Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine in February 1996. 

This coming Sunday, I will away from the microphone enjoying some live music from the talented Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, so the Bluegrass Cafe you hear will be one from the COVID-era archives.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/19/2026

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared new music, looked back at some popular songs of 30 years ago, and celebrated both Earth Day and the birthday of a Bluegrass Hall of Famer.  It was a certainly a full three-hour program, so hope you were able to join us.

New music came from a young banjo player named Izaak Atlas Schwartz and the trio of Shelton & Williams.  We also included newer music from the Po' Ramblin' Boys and Southern Legacy.

We shared several tunes from the great Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Doyle Lawson, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on April 20th.

And, for something different, we put a small spotlight on nine songs from the Top 30 songs featured in the National Bluegrass Survey as published in the February 1996 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited.  Among the performers who were on the charts that month was a very new band who had three songs on the chart, including the top song and top album, Blue Highway.  Other songs we featured were performed by the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, Gary Ferguson, Lynn Morris, Claire Lynch, Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Byron Berline with Vince Gill, IIIrd Tyme Out, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.  We'll plan to feature a look back at other National Bluegrass Survey songs in future editions of our Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/12/2026

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe began with two sets of cover songs in honor of the great Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) -- a man who is probably the favorite male country singer of many Bluegrass performers, as loads of his songs have been covered over the years.  Merle even recorded his own Bluegrass(ish) record, so how can we not celebrate his life and music during our Bluegrass show?  (Answer:  we can't).  

Several newer songs made their way onto our program on Sunday, as well, with selections from Dailey & Vincent, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Blue Highway, Anthony Howell, and the Grammy Award-winning duo of Jason Carter & Michael Cleveland.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/5/2026

The Easter Sunday edition of our Bluegrass Cafe wasn't supposed to happen, as the UConn Women's Basketball team was supposed to play in the National Championship game that day at 3:30PM.  Since the team lost on Good Friday, though, UConn was not part of the championship game, so that gave us a full three-hour radio program.  We were ready!

As you might expect on an Easter Sunday, we included many songs all about the events of Easter and Holy Week.  Hope you enjoyed the holiday!

We also had a proper remembrance of Ronnie Bowman (July 9, 1961 - March 22, 2026).  It's still hard to believe that such a vital singer and songwriter is no longer with us, but wonderful to know that his music always will be.  We included selections from some of Ronnie's solo records, as well as his recordings with Lost & Found, the Lonesome River Band, and Band of Ruhks.  

There was a bit of new music to share on Easter Sunday, too, with selections from Jim Hurst, Bryan Sutton with Kenny Smith, the Kody Norris Show, Daniel Grindstaff & the Uptown Troubadours, Edgar Loudermilk Band, the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, Red Camel Collective, and the Lonesome River Band.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/29/2026

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was probably one of the shortest shows I have presented in more than 25 years of hosting this program.  Why?  Well, it's March, and that generally means that both UConn Basketball teams are participating in the NCAA Tournament (aka "March Madness.")  Today was a day where one team played a game at 1PM and the other was due to start at 5PM.  I opted to come in for the hour, but the Sports Department asked us to trim that just a bit, so we ended up with a 45 minute program.  Still, I included some newer music -- brand new single from the Del McCoury Band! -- as well as a few classic favorites.  Hope you were able to join us for our super-condensed show!

Here's a program note:   both UConn Basketball teams won their games today.  That means there will be more basketball hitting the WHUS airwaves next weekend.  My understanding is this:  IF the UConn Women win their Final Four game on Friday evening (April 3rd), they will play in the National Championship game on Sunday afternoon (April 5th -- Easter Sunday) at 3:30PM.  That means no live Bluegrass Cafe that day at all.  We'll let you know what's happening as soon as we officially know anything.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/22/2026

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was celebratory, but also, a bit sad.  The sadness, of course, came with the news of the passing of the great Ronnie Bowman at the age of 64.  One of the greatest singers of his generation, Ronnie Bowman was a winner of multiple International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, both singly and with the Lonesome River Band.  As we didn't learn about his death until the middle of the show, we will remember Ronnie Bowman and his music properly during a future Bluegrass Cafe program.  May he rest in peace.

The celebratory portion of our program came because after many long years of waiting, the Stanley Brothers are finally going to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.  It's very exciting, as there are not-so-many "pure" Bluegrass musicians represented in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the music of Ralph and Carter has impacted just about every performer to come after them.  We shared lots of songs from the Stanleys, as well as many renditions of their tunes from other Bluegrass performers.

March Madness continues for both UConn Basketball teams.  As of this writing, we know that at least the UConn Women's team will be playing a game on Sunday, and there's also a possibility that the Men's team will advance and play on Sunday, as well.  IF we have a show preemption this coming Sunday (March 29th), we will let you know as soon as we know.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/15/2026

Our Bluegrass Cafe presented on the Ides of March opened with a selection of Irish (or Irish-sounding) tunes in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  But that was just the start of our "celebration."

On March 14th, I celebrated my birthday, so for this program, I wanted to share music from a few other March 14th birthday celebrants in the World of Bluegrass, including Bob Paisley, Kristin Scott Benson, and Terry McGill.  We enjoyed music from all of these performers.  And, of course, I couldn't resist a bit of self-indulgence, so much of the remainder of the show included songs that I would put on a list of Bluegrass favorites (though, in truth, I could have played many, many others, as well).  Next time...   😀

New music was featured, too, including selections from Junior Sisk, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Carson Peters & Iron Mountain, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Southern Legacy, and the Travelin' McCourys.  

This week, the NCAA Basketball Tournament (aka "March Madness") begins.  At this point, we're not 100% sure of when a game might be played on Sunday, but there's always a possibility that there will be one, and if there's possibly a game, there's also possibly a preemption of some or all of our Bluegrass Cafe time.  Lots of "possibility" there, right?  We'll let you know what happens as soon as we know anything.  Until then, enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/8/2026

Before it's Sunday again, here's a look back at our March 8th Bluegrass Cafe.  It was a slightly abbreviated program, beginning 15 minutes later than 4PM as the UConn Women's Basketball team played in the Big East Tournament.  

March 8th was International Woman's Day, so we shared music from many of the fine women performers who have survived and thrived in the World of Bluegrass.  We included everyone from Sara and Maybelle Carter to Martha Adcock and Lynn Morris to Molly Tuttle.  

During our program, we took a few minutes to remember the music of Jim Buchanan (January 1, 1941 - March 6, 2026) -- a top-notch Bluegrass fiddler who worked for many years with Jim & Jesse & the Virginia Boys, as well as with country music performers like George Jones and Mel Tillis.  

And we took a few minutes to chat with Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance President Jeffrey Horton, as the RIBA folks have a wonderful concert event they are presenting at Bally's Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI on March 21st.  Find more info about RIBA, this event, and their upcoming Hall of Fame ceremonies in April by clicking on the hyperlinks.
