"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/25/2015

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was one in which we remembered a bona fide Bluegrass innovator, shared a few new recordings, and included a whole bunch of ghost-type songs in anticipation of Halloween.  Hope you were able to join us...

Jim Rooney & Alan Munde inducted Bill Keith
into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at IBMA, 10/1/2015.
Young "Brad" Keith as a BGB
Over the past few days, we have learned of the passing of William Bradford Keith -- an innovator who made listeners realize that there was another way to play the banjo.  When Bill Keith joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in early 1963, Monroe changed his name to "Brad" Keith, and his chromatic style of playing the banjo was introduced to a whole new audience.  Though Keith's tenure as a Blue Grass Boy only lasted about 9 months, he would go on to work with lots more performers, both Bluegrass and not.  Just a bit more than three weeks ago, Bill Keith was in Raleigh, NC to accept his induction into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.  It was a true, well-deserved "give me the roses while I live" kind of moment.  That Keith style of banjo picking lives on...as it should.

Halloween will be celebrated at the tail end of this week, so it was time to dust off a few of the ghostly songs we enjoy playing on the radio this time every year.  While we didn't have time to play all of the Halloween songs on my list, we still covered a lot of ground with songs from Hot Rize, Front Range, Del McCoury & the Dixie Pals, Bob Amos, David Parmley, the Larry Stephenson Band, Springfield Exit, and, of course, the Country Gentlemen.

Finally, Sunday was a day to share a little bit of newer music from three acts with new Mountain Fever Records -- Mountain Faith, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, and Nothin' Fancy -- as well as a new act on Rebel Records:  Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.  Other 2015 recordings were played, too -- music from Cody Shuler, Bear Minimum, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, the South Carolina Broadcasters, and the Gibson Brothers.

Have yourself a great week, and be sure to join Jim behind the mic for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.

Playlist - 10/18/2015 - Joe Bussard's 2nd WHUS Show

Hi Folks.

Joe Bussard
It was not our intention to have Joe Bussard on Bluegrass Cafe, but the unexpected change in time for the sports broadcast completely preempted Red Rooster Party where his show is scheduled to appear, and his show slipped into Bluegrass Cafe which started a half-hour late for the same preemption.  We were delighted to share the time with Joe, though.  Joe's show will typically air during Red Rooster Party on most Sundays between 2pm and 4pm.

The remaining two hours was great bluegrass music that included new material from Jerry Salley, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, and The South Carolina Broadcasters. You can check out the playlist below.

Amy will be with you next Sunday.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/11/2015

Sunday afternoon was a picture-perfect October day in Storrs, Connecticut.  What better way to spend it than with a bunch of fine Bluegrass music on the radio, right?
Traver Hollow's 1986 LP, "Another Sleepless Night."

As usual, the show featured a good bit of "local" Bluegrass music, but remember, "local" to us is any band or performer living in southern New England or nearby New York State.  To that end, we included music from the Feinberg Brothers (NY), Laura Orshaw (MA), the Seth Sawyer Band (VT), White Mountain Bluegrass (NH), Traver Hollow (CT), and Bear Minimum (CT & NH).

Happy Birthday, Leigh Gibson!
We celebrated the birthday of a few performers born on October 11th:  Blaine Sprouse (10/11/1956), Josh Crowe (10/11/1957), and Leigh Gibson (10/11/1971).  In addition to birthdays, we also remembered the legendary Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, who were inducted as members of the Country Music Hall of Fame on October 14, 1985.

Hope you had an opportunity to join us for at least part of your Sunday.  Please make plans to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy your week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/4/2015

Fresh from spending the week in Raleigh at a somewhat soggy edition of the International Bluegrass Music Association's World of Bluegrass conference, on Sunday afternoon, I tried with music to recap a few highlights of the week.  Three hours probably wasn't a long enough time period to do that, but since that's the length of our Bluegrass Cafe, I had to figure out how to make it work for today...

The Earls Of Leicester accepting one of their many IBMA Awards in 2015.
The highlight of the IBMA week is always designed to be the IBMA Awards -- who will win??  This year, the name most often called as award recipient was the Earls Of Leicester.  How can a cover band of one of the most famous bands in Bluegrass history be so darn popular?  It's easy:  they are VERY talented.  The Earls were recognized as Instrumental Group of the Year, as well as recipients of the award for Gospel Song of the Year ("Who Will Song For Me"), Album of the Year (for their eponymous Earls Of Leicester recording on Rounder), and the top prize--Entertainer of the Year.  In addition, individual members of the Earls:  Shawn Camp as Male Vocalist and Jerry Douglas as Dobro Player of the Year were recognized.  Whoa.  Rumor has it that there will be another Earls' recording coming along, and the group plans to continue recording -- and educating -- for a bit longer.

Larry Sparks performing with Alison Krauss after his
Hall of Fame acceptance speech.
Music from other award winners we shared on Sunday included tunes from Michael Cleveland (Fiddle Player of the Year), Jesse Brock (Mandolin Player of the Year), Rhonda Vincent (Female Vocalist of the Year), and Becky Buller (Emerging Act of the Year; Recorded Event of the Year for "Southern Flavor").  We also heard from one of the newest inductees into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Larry Sparks.

Hope you were able to hear something you enjoyed on Sunday's radio show.  Be sure to tune in again next Sunday from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!
