"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/25/2015

Last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe saw us here in eastern CT preparing for the latest "Storm of the Century" (which, in hindsight, was bad but not quite of "historic" proportions).  While we waited on the weather, we still shared a whole bunch of pretty darn good songs on the radio, and remembered a couple of wonderful folks who both were very important to the World of Bluegrass.

Charlie Waller & Bill Yates
Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival
May 31, 1987
To celebrate what would have been Charlie Waller's 80th birthday on January 19th, we opened the show with three songs spanning a few of the 40+ years of Country Gentlemen recorded music -- all of them featuring that rich, neither high-nor-lonesome voice.  Since the January 25th show, we've also lost one of Charlie's long-time bandmates in the Country Gents -- Bill Yates.  Sometimes, I feel like I don't play nearly enough Country Gentlemen music on the air -- think I'll try to share a good deal more this year...

On January 16th, Miss Dixie Hall, perhaps with a name not as easily recognized as that of her Country Music Hall of Famer husband, Tom T., died.  Both Miss Dixie and Tom T. have been great champions of Bluegrass music in recent years, with Dixie writing approximately 500 Bluegrass songs which have been recorded by all sorts of performers over the last 15-20 years.  In recent years, it's been a sort of "challenge" to pick up a Bluegrass recording that didn't include at least one song either written or co-written by Miss Dixie.  Jim shared a whole bunch of those songs during the January 18th show, but since Miss Dixie wrote so many fine songs, it was fairly easy to put together another set Miss Dixie originals from a whole bunch of great performers.  We could probably fill another show or two with Dixie Hall music with no repeats.  To read more about the remarkable life of Miss Dixie, check out this fine obituary from the January 17th Tennessean.

Even with these tribute sets, there was still some time for some newer music from performers including Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, the Earls Of Leicester, the Spinney Brothers, the Kevin Prater Band, Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, and the Gibson Brothers.  We also included brand-new-to-us music from Shannon & Heather Slaughter, as well as Volume Five.

Jim will join you for tomorrow's Bluegrass Cafe...while we prepare for another snowstorm on Monday.

Playlist - 1/18/2015 - Remembering Miss Dixie

Hi Folks.

Tom T. and Dixie Hall
Most of the first hour of this show was devoted to the songs written or co-written by Dixie Hall, wife of Tom T. Hall, prolific bluegrass songwriter and bluegrass supporter, and friend of animals.  "Miss Dixie," as she was known by many, passed away Friday, January 16th.

The impact Miss Dixie and her famous spouse had on bluegrass music in the past couple of decades was profound.  There are likely more songs recorded in the genre penned by the songwriting team of Tom T and Dixie than any other writing entity.  They supported new or struggling bluegrass musicians by providing songs and sometimes jobs and sustenance to get them over a hump.  Any monetary remuneration for their efforts was donated to the Bluegrass Trust Fund managed by IBMA.

We barely scratched the surface of Miss Dixie's songs recorded by a wide variety of musicians in the first hour, and we find ourselves playing her songs frequently on the show without even trying.

A good article about Miss Dixie from Bluegrass Unlimited can be read here.

Godspeed, Miss Dixie.

We debuted the second single from the new album from Darin and Brooke Aldridge, played a few songs from The Gibson Brothers' new brother duet album, and played other newer music from The Spinney Brothers; Junior Sisk; Tommy Brown; Doyle Lawson; Crow, Lawson & Williams; Becky Buller; The Earls of Leicester; Marteka and William; Russ Carson; Joe Mullins; Lonesome River Band; Larry Gillis; and The South Carolina Broadcasters.

The Heritage Corner brought forth music from Buzz Busby, The Wilson Brothers, The Johnson Mountain Boys, Bill Clifton, The Stanley Brothers, Carl Story, and Larry Richardson.

Join Amy next week when she will make the banjos and fiddles ring at the Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/11/2015

The Gibson Brothers played to a packed house on January 10th

Sunday's show was my first of 2015, and it was a fun one!  There were songs to "celebrate" the cold and chill of January, a few tunes to remember the birthday of Country Music Hall of Famer Ray Price, and several selections from the soon-to-be-released Rounder recording for the Gibson Brothers -- "Brotherhood."  Hope you were able to tune in to the show!

Happy Birthday, Ray Price
(January 12, 1926-December 16, 2003)
As far as country music performers who have been covered in the Bluegrass World, the music of Ray Price must rank right toward the top.  We could have played several more than six Ray Price selections to remember what would have been the 89th birthday of this Country Music Hall of Famer on January 12th, but we limited ourselves to two songs sung by the Cherokee Cowboy, himself, as well as four covers from IIIrd Tyme Out, Mickey Harris, the Del McCoury Band, and White Mountain Bluegrass.

Hitting the stores on February 24th, but
hitting the WHUS airwaves now...
After seeing the ever-popular Gibson Brothers perform in Lexington, MA on Saturday evening, it was fun to be able to play a few selections from the Gibsons' new record -- their Rounder Records debut -- which will be officially released on February 24th.  This tribute to brother duos from one of the best brother duos working today has been talked about and "in the making" for what seems like forever.  The good thing is that the record is outstanding with a nice variety of selections from several brother duos, including the Monroe Brothers, Blue Sky Boys, the Louvin Brothers, Jim & Jesse, the Osborne Brothers, and the Everly Brothers, to name just a few.

Sure hope you have a nice week, and that you'll be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe!

Playlist - 1/4/2015

Hi Folks.

For the first show of 2015 I decided to play some things I've been listening to lately.

That included new music from Larry Gillis; Phil Leadbetter; The Spinny BrothersLarry Sparks; Nathan Stanley; Marteka and WilliamCrowe, Lawson & Williams; Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; Tommy Brown; The Earls of LeiscesterLonesome River Band; Randall Hibbitts; Russ Carson; Larry Stephenson; Missy WernerBecky Buller; The South Carolina Broadcasters; and Mac Wiseman.

There were several notable Heritage Corner specials including three tracks from the 1986 Ray Davis recording of Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys Introducing James King.   We also heard a track from the first Johnson Mountain Boys album on Rounder that has never been reissued on CD.  Probably the rarest thing we heard was a track recorded for a movie soundtrack in 1961 by Don Reno & Red Smiley.

Other Heritage Corner classics included tracks from Buzz Busby; The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover; The Dillards; The Virginia Mountain Boys; Dave Evans; Joe Val; Flatt & Scruggs; Red Allen and Frank Wakefield; The Stanley Brothers; and Rafe Brady.

There was a high music-to-noise ratio on this show, and it was a good feeling all around.  We hope you enjoyed listening as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.

Amy will be back next Sunday making the banjos and fiddles ring, so don't forget to tune in.
