"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/20/2026

Looking back at our Bluegrass Cafe of September 20th, it was a day to celebrate the mid-September birthdays of two Country Music legends:  Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992) and Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953).  The song catalogs of both of these Hall of Famers have been heavily covered by Bluegrass performers over the years, so we shared lots of fine country music performed in a Bluegrass style.  Hope you liked it.

In addition to classics, we shared a few newer recordings, as well, including selections from Wyatt Ellis, Donna Ulisse, the Grascals, and David Peterson.  We also played the first song recorded by Dolly Parton that has been released since her passing.  Dolly teamed up with the First Ladies of Bluegrass (Alison Brown, Becky Buller, Sierra Hull, Missy Raines, Molly Tuttle) to record "Bound To Ride" -- a track featured on the new Stanley Brothers tribute recording on Compass Records.

We look forward to joining you with a new Bluegrass Cafe once again this coming Sunday afternoon.  Consider tuning in from 4-7PM, won't you?

See you then!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/13/2026

With the exception of three songs, today's Bluegrass Cafe exclusively featured music originally written by, performed by, or written about Bill Monroe (who is, of course, widely considered to be the Father of Bluegrass Music).  Why?  The reason is quite simple:  Bill Monroe would have celebrated his 115th birthday today -- born September 13, 1911.  If a birthday isn't reason enough to celebrate a music legend, what is?  We wouldn't have a Bluegrass radio program without Bill Monroe, so celebrating him is the best thing to do.

We couldn't forget to acknowledge Grandparents Day, so we shared one song about a grandfather and one about a grandmother.  Happy Grandparents Day to all!

Today is also the birthday of another noted Bluegrass musician, as Lou Reid of the Seldom Scene was born September 13, 1954.

Hope you enjoyed our Monroe-centric broadcast today!  Please consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/6/2026

Today's broadcast of our Bluegrass Cafe was both abbreviated and expanded at the same time.  As UConn Men's Soccer action took over the WHUS airwaves starting at 5PM, we opted to start the show an hour earlier at 3PM.  We had a lot of ground to cover this week, so didn't want to try to squeeze it all into one hour.

It's a holiday weekend, so the show started with several songs centering on the theme of "working" or "labor."  Hope everyone is enjoying the last unofficial weekend of summer!

I wasn't in the studio last week to do a live version of our program, so I wasn't able to pay tribute to the wonderful Dolly Parton (January 19, 1946 - August 25, 2026).  We've long celebrated Dolly during our Bluegrass Cafe, as she was many things, as we know.  If Dolly had never sung a note or written a song, we would still know her from her many charitable contributions to the world.  Fortunately for us, though, Dolly was an incredible songwriter who wrote many songs that have been covered by many Bluegrass performers over the years.  In her later years, Dolly successfully recorded several Bluegrass-themed records, and often appeared as a guest vocalist with various performers.  We will spotlight some of her guest vocalist recordings in a future Bluegrass Cafe.  Dolly will be missed forever, but what a legacy she left for all!

We hope to join you for a full three-hour Bluegrass Cafe next week.  Have a wonderful week!

Amy O.
