"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/30/2009

Hi Folks.

We had a couple of Heritage Corner sets today, including a set honoring Carter Stanley who would have celebrated his 84th birthday August 27 -- a birthday I share with him. We also included Heritage Corner songs from Flatt & Scruggs, Jim & Jesse, and Carl Story.

We also played a fun set of pop songs done bluegrass style by Joe Val, Larry Cordle, The Charles River Valley Boys, and Emerson & Waldron.

We aired some new music including material from Ricky Skaggs, Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Gold Heart, Mike Jackson, Darin Aldridge & Brooke Justice, and Adam Steffey whose new CD we featured.

We gave away a pair of day passes to the Rhythm & Roots festival in Rhode Island over Labor Day weekend, so it really can pay to listen to Bluegrass Cafe!

Amy will be with you next Sunday, so be sure to tune in for the banjos and fiddles while you are out enjoying the holiday weekend.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/23/2009

After a two-week "vacation" from the airwaves, I returned to WHUS on Sunday afternoon for what I hope was an enjoyable show.

We listened to a bit of brand-new-to-us music (received in the past couple of weeks) from the likes of Ricky Skaggs and a California-based group called Sawmill Road. Mr. Skaggs has produced a new recording on which he plays every instrument and sings every note called "Songs My Dad Loved." The CD seems to be a tribute to the late Hobert Skaggs, and perhaps is Ricky's musical way of thanking his father for launching him on a musical path when Ricky was 3 years old. While Sawmill Road is a California-based group, its members are originally from points all over the country, including Texas, New York, Indiana, New Mexico, and Arizona. The second recording for them is called "Fire On The Kettle," and features a lot of great original material, some written by the group's bass player, Steve Spurgin (formerly of the IBMA award-winning group, California). Both of these new CDs have great music to offer -- rest assured you'll be hearing plenty more from each of them in future weeks at the Cafe.

As Jim told you last week, the final nominees have been announced for the 2009 International Bluegrass Music (or, IBMA) Awards. Looking at Jim's playlist, I'm guessing he must have played the tunes that are nominated in the Song of the Year category. While we didn't examine each and every category yesterday, we did take a few minutes to play tunes from each of the five nominees for Album of the Year. In all the years I've been voting for IBMA Awards, I think this is the most difficult, as I really, really like nearly all of the nominees in each category. It's very challenging to pick just one winner, but that's a great problem to have, isn't it? The awards will be given out in ceremonies at the Ryman Auditorium on Thursday, October 1st.

We got to give a few things away on Sunday, too. In addition to giving away copies of great CDs by Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, as well as Clay Jones, we had 2 tickets for one-day to the upcoming Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, RI.

Be sure to join Jim & Marti next Sunday for more great Bluegrass sounds....

A big BG weekend...

Well, Jim has suggested that I would add some photos from the Firebox show yesterday by Nick & Dick & the Rank Stranglers, so I guess I shall. This was my first visit to the Firebox, and I got to see a dandy show filled with the music of the Stanley Brothers. Thanks to these talented musicians for a fine evening, and be sure to visit the Firebox on Sunday nights to see and hear some great BG music when you can. (Of course, we'd also appreciate it if you'd keep your radio tuned to WHUS and the "Bluegrass Cafe" on your way driving to the Firebox)...

Here are some photos from Sunday's show:

Dick Bowden & Nick Novia

Dick Bowden, "Big Jim" Hammond, Nick Novia

Dick Bowden, "Fiddlin' Shaw" (Dave Shaw), "Bertie Sue" (Dick's sister, Bobbi Bowden)

Our radio buddy, Dave Helman -- host of "Country Corner" on WTCC (Saturdays, 1-3PM on 90.7 FM, Springfield, MA)

In addition to fine Bluegrass music at the Firebox on Sunday, I got to see and hear some great tunes from Connecticut's Grass Routes [performing at the Andover Gazebo in a show sponsored by the Friends of the Andover (CT) Library] on Friday night, and on Saturday, I journeyed to the lovely Berkshire hamlet of Peru, MA for some always-enjoyable music from the Bear Bridge Band (a/k/a "Bear Maximum") and their offshoot duet, Bear Minimum.

Grass Routes performs at the Andover Gazebo in Andover, CT -- 8/17/2009

The Bear Bridge Band (Dave Shaw, Dave Orlomoski, Robert Fraker, Lillian Fraker) at the Peru Car Cruise-In in Peru, MA -- 8/15/2009

Bear Minimum (or, the two Daves of Bear Bridge -- the one on the left is my brother and the one on the right might as well be)

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/16/2009

Hi Folks.

Most of the show was dedicated to various 2009 IBMA Awards nominees. We had several requests that varied the program a bit, and we tried out a few new tunes and lesser-played tunes to measure reaction.

We also featured a few tracks spread out through the show from a 1997 CD from regional band Shady Creek titled "Get Your Feet Wet!" to celebrate Nick Anderson's 2nd annual Shady Creek Music and Homecoming festival the day before. All the members from that CD's band configuration reunited for a performance the previous evening.

Here's a photo of that band:

Tom Bressette, Ted Mello, Nick Anderson, and Suzie Gibson (l to r).

New addition: Click here for a video of the Shady Creek Reunion Band!

There was also a surprise performance by New England bluegrass pioneer, Sam Tidwell, and some of his friends, including former Bluegrass Cafe producer, Myrna Riquier.

Fred Etheridge, Myrna Riquier, Suzie Gibson, Mike ?, Nick Anderson, and Sam Tidwell

I'll bet Amy will add some photos of the Rank Stranglers when she gets back. Check back here from time to time to find out.

Amy will be with you next week to make the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/9/2009

Hi Folks,

We began the show with a heritage corner tribute to the recently-departed Mike Seeger that began with selections from his two influential Folkways field-recorded LPs, and two of Mike at Newport with The New Lost City Ramblers.

About halfway through the first hour we put Dick Bowden on the air for a great discussion of Stanley music and some banjo pickin'. Dick, whose regular band is The Old Time Bluegrass Singers, is participating in a Stanley tribute show at a Hartford restaurant (The Firebox) next Sunday with a group called "Nick & Dick and the Rank Stranglers", so we had a good time while promoting that show.

We were able to get some new music on that included singles from Darren Beachley, Larry Stephenson with Dailey & Vincent, and a couple from Barry Scott & Second Wind's new CD.

Next week we will be back, or we will have a bluegrass guest fill-in for us. You will just have to tune in to find out.
