"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/30/2020

Two words to describe Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe:  celebrate and remember.  We did a little bit of both for several different performers, as well as shared a smattering of newer Bluegrass music.  Hope you enjoyed the program.

Our main focus for the week was, of course, a big portion of music from the late
Steve Gulley, who died on August 18th after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.  Steve Gulley didn't waste time in his 57 years on this earth, as he created loads of wonderful music which will be enjoyed and celebrated for years to come.  We shared a good selection of those songs from Steve's time spent with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, as a founding member of both Mountain Heart and Grasstowne, fronting his own band of Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, with his sometimes songwriting and duet partners, Tim Stafford and Dale Ann Bradley, as well as a track from a soon-to-be-released record by Phil Leadbetter & the All-Stars of Bluegrass which features Steve Gulley and his wife, Debbie.  A couple of these tracks were recorded live at benefits for WDVX, a non-profit radio station in east Tennessee where Steve Gulley was a on-air DJ for the last couple of years.  Many thanks to broadcaster Lee Michael Demsey of BluegrassCountry.org for sharing some of these songs with me for broadcasting.  Steve Gulley will certainly be missed, but his music lives on...

We also remembered a Bluegrass legend (and Hall of Famer) who was born on August 27, 1925 -- Carter Stanley.  Twelve years after Carter, another Bluegrass Hall of Famer was also born on August 27th -- banjo picker extraordinaire J.D. Crowe.  In addition to songs from Carter and Crowe, we heard a couple from Shawn Camp of the Earls Of Leicester, as his birthday was celebrated on August 29th.  And, a bit closer to home for me were a couple of songs thrown into the mix in honor of my own father, Alton Orlomoski, who celebrated his 91st birthday on August 29th.

There were a couple of newer selections to share, too, with music from the Kody Norris Show, Stephen Mougin, Carolina Blue, High Fidelity, the Feinberg Brothers, FastTrack, and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road.

As always, many thanks for listening to our program, and be sure to give our Facebook page a "like," if you're so inclined:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Have a terrific week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/23/2020

As you know, we've been pre-recording our Bluegrass Cafe programs since mid-April.  Up until April, every one of the radio programs I have ever done since starting as a college broadcaster in late 1988 have been produced "live," so this recording thing is completely new to me.  My apologies for all of the background noise with cricket sounds and loud trucks you might hear in the background of our shows, but we are grateful to have the opportunity to still present a weekly radio program.  The show is put together in three separate parts on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday evenings on my porch.  I'm sharing that because the first two hours of today's show featured celebrations of four August birthday celebrants (Jimmy Martin, Steve Martin, Connie Smith, Porter Wagoner) and a good portion of new music released during 2020.  Those hours were recorded on Monday night.  By the time we got around to producing the Hour #3 on Wednesday night, the sad passing of Steve Gulley had taken place.  We intend to pay full tribute to this wonderfully gifted singer and songwriter during next week's show, but for today, we hope you enjoyed our brief tribute to Steve Gulley in the first segment of our Gospel Hour.

Even though 2020 is a terrible year for performing live, many performers have been releasing new music this year.  We included a few of those in this show, with songs from Rhonda Vincent, Stephen MouginCarolina Blue, Wood & Wire, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, High Fidelity, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, Laurie Lewis, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, and Becky Buller.

Thanks for listening.  If you would like to get in touch, please do.  Send an email to bgcafe@gmail.com and/or please give our Facebook page a "like":  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/16/2020

After our "repeat" broadcast last week due to Tropical Storm Isaias, this Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was a completely new presentation.  Hope you enjoyed it!

Mid-August seems to be a fine time to be born if you want to be a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.  This week, we celebrated the August birthdays of two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame -- Webb Pierce (born August 8, 1921) and Buck Owens (born August 12, 1929) -- as well as one member of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame -- Jimmy Martin (born August 10, 1927).  No better way to celebrate than by sharing the music of these fine performers, and in the case of Webb and Buck, many of their songs have been covered to the Bluegrass world, and continue to be recorded

We included a little bit of new music this week, too, featuring a couple of selections each from Stephen Mougin ("Ordinary Soul" on Dark Shadow Recording) and Carolina Blue, whose "Take Me Back" was recently released on their new label, Billy Blue Records.  Other newer releases for 2020 included selections from the Feinberg Brothers, Greg Booth (from "The New Reso Gathering"), Junior Sisk, and High Fidelity.

As the remainder of our programs for 2020 will be recorded at home, I'd like to encourage you to send any requests to me through email (bgcafe@gmail.com) or check out our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe).

Have a great week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/9/2020 : Play It Again, WHUS...

Howdy all!

If you live in Connecticut, depending on where you reside, you may be living in some rustic conditions.  On Tuesday, Storm Isaias visited the State and left more than a half-million Connecticut households without electricity, telephone, and/or Internet services.  Recovery is continuing -- slowly -- so hope if you are still without power, it will soon be back for you.

At my home in eastern Connecticut, the power, telephone, and Internet went out on the evening of Tuesday, August 4th around 6PM.  By the morning of Thursday the 6th, both electricity and telephone had returned, but the Internet is still out.  Internet is required in the production of the Home Version of our Bluegrass Cafe, and new shows need to be submitted by the Thursday before the show airs.  That just didn't happen this week.  For the first time in almost twenty years of broadcasting at WHUS, we had the opportunity to choose a rebroadcast to air today.  While some of you may still be doing some "elevated camping" at home, today's Bluegrass Cafe was a rebroadcast of our show that originally aired on June 7, 2020.  This show consisted of a full three hours of live Bluegrass recordings, and was designed as a somewhat-lame attempt to bring you a "festival" vibe -- especially during this summer of pretty much NO Bluegrass festivals in New England.  Hope you enjoyed hearing it again -- or perhaps, even, for the first time.  The original write-up for this broadcast can be found here:  http://bgcafe.blogspot.com/2020/06/bluegrass-cafe-playlist-672020.html

My hope is that the home Internet service will be restored by Monday or Tuesday, and that our August 16th broadcast will be "fresh" (as opposed to a rebroadcast).

Stay safe, everyone, and have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/2/2020

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we remembered two wonderful performers who left this world too soon, shared some music from a third performer who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and put together our third hour of songs all about trains.  Hope you were able to join us on this first Sunday of August.

Two very important Bluegrass and old-time country music performers died during the last couple of weeks in July.  Dan Kelly, a Grand Masters  champion fiddler who made a career playing with performers as varied as Roy Acuff, Clint Black, Pam Tillis, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, and most recently, the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, died on July 22nd at the age of 54 after a heart attack.  Less than a week later, banjo great Kenny Ingram had a massive stroke and died on July 27th at the age of 67.  Kenny Ingram played some wonderful Scruggs-style banjo with several bands, including Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass, Jimmy Martin & the Sunny Mountain Boys, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, and most recently, the Larry Stephenson Band.  Both musicians left us far too soon ~ to honor them, we shared quite a bit of music from both performers during our first hour of program on Sunday.

Another portion of the first hour of Sunday's radio show was devoted to some music performed by guitar picker, singer, and songwriter, Steve Gulley.  This past week, Steve Gulley was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  We shared music from some of Steve's bands, including his mid-1990s tenure with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Mountain Heart (of which Steve Gulley was a founding member), and from a new duet record he is working on with sometime-songwriting-partner, Tim Stafford.  A GoFundMe campaign has been established by Gulley's friend and former bandmate, Phil Leadbetter.  Best wishes to Steve Gulley.

Our second hour included even more train songs, and included just one repeat of a song we had heard in two previous train sets during our pre-recorded programs.  Will there be a fourth set of train songs in future?  Stay tuned...

Thanks for listening to our Bluegrass Cafe.  If you'd like to contact us during these COVID-19 broadcasts, please send an email to bgcafe@gmail.com.  You can also check out our Facebook page by clicking here.

Have a wonderful week, and stay healthy!
