"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/25/2020

During our Bluegrass Cafe on this last Sunday of October, we celebrated several Bluegrass (and Bluegrass-friendly) birthdays.  As Halloween is less than one week away, we also shared a whole bunch of Bluegrass ghost stories.  Boo!

The birthdays celebrated included those of Bluegrassers
Eric Gibson, Larry Stephenson, and Bob Amos, and country singer Dwight Yoakam.  In addition, we remembered "everybody's favorite Grandpa," Grandpa Jones (born Lewis Marshall Jones:  October 20, 1913 - February 19, 1998).

Lots of folks always enjoy hearing ghost and spooky stories, especially this time of year.  In the world of Bluegrass, there have been many spooky songs recorded over the years, and for this show, we pulled together nearly a dozen of them.  Hope you weren't too scared to listen.  :)

During these COVID-19 days of home-produced shows, don't forget you can still get in touch with me with requests and such.  All you have to do is send email to bgcafe@gmail.com or check out our Bluegrass Cafe Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe

Hope you have a wonderful week, and that you'll consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/18/2020

The theme for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe?  There wasn't one this week, but we still shared a whole lot of fine Bluegrass music.  Hope you were able to join us.

After a leaf-centered opening, we chose songs from all over the Bluegrass spectrum, traditional tunes from classic performers to more recent offerings for 2020.  Among the newer music, we heard selections from
Junior Sisk, RockHeartsHigh Fidelity, Linda Lay, Fast Track, Phil Leadbetter & the the All-Stars of Bluegrass, Laurie Lewis, Glen Duncan, the Edgar Loudermilk Band, the Feinberg Brothers, and J.B. & Jamie Dailey.

There were also a few more songs from the pen of Robert Fraker (October 1, 1947 - May 2, 2017), a birthday song or two for fiddler Jason Barie (born October 14, 1979), and memorial tunes for big events in the lives of Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs.

Hope you are doing well, and that you'll continue to listen for our Bluegrass Cafe each Sunday:  4-7PM.

Enjoy the week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/11/2020

Our 25th (!) pre-recorded Bluegrass Cafe hit the WHUS airwaves today.  Whoa!  Back in April when WHUS said we could start recording shows at home, I figured I'd record them until school started again in the fall, and then, we'd be allowed to come back to the studio in Storrs.  Clearly, 2020 had something else in store, as we now have 25 shows "in the can," and who knows how many more recorded shows there will be?  Time will tell...

Anyhow, today's show included songs from some of the big winners of the 2020 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, which were presented in virtual ceremonies on October 1st.  Congratulations to all of the winners!  If you'd like to read the full list of award winners, click here.

We also shared music from two of the three 2020 inductees into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame:  the Johnson Mountain Boys and New Grass Revival.  These two bands -- both outstanding and with legions of fans -- presented two completely different forms of music, and we shared some from each of them on Sunday.

And, of course, there were a few birthdays to celebrate and remember.  Today's birthday boy is Leigh Gibson (born October 11, 1970), so we shared two songs of the Gibson Brothers written by Leigh.  Another wonderful songwriter and performer is one who left us too soon:  Robert Fraker (October 1, 1946 - May 2, 2017).  Robert was a friend to all and a gifted songwriter and performer with the Bear Bridge Band, so we shared two songs from his creative brain during our gospel set.  And then, there's John Lennon (October 9, 1940 - December 8, 1980), who was NOT a Bluegrass performer, but who will always be remembered as one of the Beatles -- a band whose music
continues to inspire performers of all types of music.

Hope you were able to tune in this week, but if not, there's always next Sunday.  :)  See you then.

Enjoy the week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/4/2020

The first-ever virtual conference of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) took place this past week, and by all accounts, it was a big success.  The "marquee" event of World of Bluegrass each year is the annual IBMA Awards.  This year's winners were announced in a virtual ceremony on Thursday evening, one night before we recorded this week's edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.  So, we didn't talk at all about 2020 award winners during this week's program, but we found lots of other fine songs to play.  Hope you were able to join us.

We looked back a bit during our first hour, sharing selections from some of the performers who have been named "Emerging Artist of the Year" from 1994 through 2018.  While some of the bands/performers who have received this award over the years are no longer working in Bluegrass (or in some case, even performing at all), there was still plenty of good music to share.

The 2020
Podunk Songwriting Contest winning songs were shared during the first hour, as well.  Though the Podunk Bluegrass Festival was a casualty of COVID-19 for this year, the songwriting contest entries were still judged and ranked, and the songs of the winners in 2020 will be presented at the 2021 Podunk Bluegrass Festival.  In addition, there will also be a 2021 Podunk Songwriting Contest.  If you are a songwriter, consider entering the contest.  Entries will be accepted beginning November 1, 2021.  Need more information?  Find it here.

For the record, the 2020 Podunk Songwriting Contest winners were:

  1. "Pines Of Caroline" - Boyd Timothy of Highland, UT
  2. "Bluebonnet Blue" - Jerry Johnston of Ft. Worth, TX
  3. "Word Of Mouth" - Paul Kelly of Santa Fe, NM & Buddy Guido of Mohawk, NY
Congratulations to the winners!

Our second hour celebrated birthdays of two more Country Music Hall of Famers --

both named Marty, and one definitely more Bluegrass than the other.  To celebrate 2020 Hall of Fame electee,
Marty Stuart (born September 30, 1958), we included music he has recorded with Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass, Carl Jackson, Curly Seckler, Ralph Stanley, and others.  The second Marty is the late Marty Robbins (September 26, 1925 - December 8, 1982), who definitely was NOT a Bluegrass performer, but like many country music folks of his era, has had a whole lot of Bluegrass performers cover his material.

Hope you enjoyed the program, and will consider joining us once again next Sunday, 4-7PM.  If you'd like to check our Facebook page, please do, and don't forget that you are always welcome to send us an email to bgcafe@gmail.com.

Have a great week ~ stay healthy!
