Playlist - 5/29/2016 - Memorial Day

Hi Folks.

The show that precedes Bluegrass Cafe -- Red Rooster Party -- was completely preempted by sports, so the beginning of Bluegrass Cafe hosted the great half-hour program of Joe Bussard's Country Classics which normally airs on Red Rooster Party.  Joe had prepared a Memorial Day show that complemented the bluegrass that followed quite well.

We included songs all through the show related to the Memorial Day with notables by The South Carolina Broadcasters, The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover, Charlie Moore, The Stanley Brothers, Dry Branch Fire Squad, J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers, Larry Sparks, Tom T. Hall, Reno & Smiley, and The Gibson Brothers.

We introduced new music from Bryan Sutton who will be appearing in Hamden and at Strawberry Park this coming week.  We also heard new music from The Lonely Heartstring Band which will also be appearing at Strawberry Park.

Be sure to tune in next Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.  I'll see you at Strawberry Park.  For more information about Strawberry Park, click here.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/22/2016

James King (September 9, 1958-May 19, 2016)
Photo courtesy of Ted Lehmann.  Check out Ted's Bluegrass
adventures at his blog:  http://tedlehmann.blogspot.com/
James King -- the Bluegrass Storyteller -- was a tremendously gifted, emotive singer who lost a lengthy battle with liver disease on May 19th.  Mr. King had the amazing ability to wring the emotion out of every word he sang, and he had a way of making the listener believe he was actually the subject of all of the songs he was singing.  Amazing.  Though Mr. King died at the age of 57 (he would have turned 58 on September 9th), he made his indelible mark in the world of Bluegrass Music both through his own recordings on Rounder Records (seven solo releases between 1993 and 2013) and his membership in the Bluegrass supergroup known as Longview.  It's a fair guess that James King will be long remembered as one of the best singers in the history of Bluegrass Music.

Happy 91st birthday to Mac Wiseman!
In addition to many songs from the James King Song Catalog, we heard several songs in birthday tribute to Mac Wiseman (who turns 91 on May 23rd), as well as for Tom T. Hall (who celebrates birthday #80 on May 25th).

New music was a pretty big part of the show, too, and we had that in abundance on Sunday.  There was brand new music from Sister Sadie, Edgar Loudermilk, the Special Consensus, the Farm Hands, and Frank Wakefield & Leon Morris, and very recent music from the Del McCoury Band, Jeff White, the Hot Flashes, the Spinney Brothers, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Be sure to join Jim for next Sunday afternoon's edition of Bluegrass Cafe, won't you?

Have a good week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/8/2016 (plus, an hour's worth of "Tangled Roots")

My mother - Eleanor Orlomoski -
and I atop the former National Tower
in Gettysburg, PA, c. mid-1980s.
Sunday was a day filled with activity at the University of Connecticut.  It was the day for several commencement ceremonies, and, of course, it was Mother's Day!  To make things even more interesting, we filled in for the last hour of "Tangled Roots," so from 3PM until 7PM, we played a whole bunch of Bluegrass on our WHUS airwaves, with just a tiny bit of classic country music thrown in for good measure.  Hope you were able to hear at least some it!

As you might expect, we featured several songs about everyone's favorite subject today:  Mother.  Hoping you got to enjoy some time with -- or some wonderful memories of -- your mother today.

New music was part of the show, too.  This time around, it came from a brand-spanking new record from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice.  "Poor Boy's Pleasure" is Junior's first record for Mountain Fever Records, and it is sure to see a whole lot of airplay.  Other new music came from Connecticut's own Hot Flashes (the trio featuring Amy Gallatin, Peggy Harvey, and Gail Wade), as well as the Spinney Brothers, Sister Sadie, and the Rice-Menzone Alliance.

Johnnie & Jack on the extreme right in this photo with some
of their band members, including the soon-to-be Foggy Mountain Boy
fiddler, Paul Warren (third from left).
We also featured a couple of songs from the songbook of Johnny Wright and Jack Anglin, brothers-in-law who had a whole bunch of hit records in the late 1940s/early 1950s as Johnnie & Jack.  Their music was sort of infectious, and several of the duo's songs have been covered in the Bluegrass world over the years.  We picked out just a couple of those songs, and could have easily included a few more.  Maybe next time...

Sure hope you'll be able to join Jim in the Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon!

Have a good week -
Amy
