"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/23/2007

You can probably guess that since Sunday's show aired two days before Christmas, the majority of the songs played were Bluegrass Christmas tunes. There sure are a lot of great ones these days, so putting together a show with a bunch of 'em is no problem whatsoever. When I first was doing a Bluegrass radio show in 1988 (yikes -- can't believe it was that long ago), I had access to exactly TWO records that contained Bluegrass Christmas recordings. Now, almost 20 years later, we could easily fill a month's worth of programs with Bluegrass Christmas music, and there would be no repeats! How the times have changed!

Into the mix on Sunday, we sprinkled a couple of non-Christmas tunes, too. One set featured a bit of music from some of my personal favorite Bluegrass CD releases for 2007, nd the other quick set featured tunes from four of our best Bluegrass bands in southern New England. We also concluded our quest to give away 25 CDs during the five weeks leading up to Christmas, so that was a whole lot of fun.

Join Jim & Marti for what may be a sports-shortened broadcast this Sunday, and you'll hear from me again in the new year...

Happy New Year!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 12/16/2007

Marti decided to stay home out of the weather (snow, freezing rain, ice), so I did the show solo.

We have an advance copy of Rhonda Vincent's new CD "Good Thing Going" (to be released in January 2008), so I featured three tracks from that effort in response to several requests.

I also featured some Christmas and Holiday music from 3 Fox Drive, Reno & Smiley, and Ralph Stanley.

You might notice I am playing more songs from local artists lately. I've come to realize that it is a noble responsibility to promote local artists on our community radio station, so you can expect to hear more local artists on the show in the future.

Probably the most unusual song was a request called in a couple of weeks ago that I was able to fulfill this week: a 1963 live recording of "He Went To Sleep and the Hogs Ate Him" from the Stanley Brothers. You won't find that kind of response to a request on XM or Sirius.

Thank you for all of the calls and requests. I really enjoy talking to our listeners.

Amy will be with you next Sunday, 23 December. Be sure to tune in.

Tony Trischka in Manchester, CT -- Saturday, January 19th

If you are fond of the banjo, don't miss this upcoming opportunity to see and hear a master at work...

Tony Trischka will be at The Main Pub Restaurant & Music Club, 306 Main Street, Manchester CT on Saturday, January 19th at 8PM. Tony's 2007 Rounder CD, "Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular," pairs him in duets with some standout banjo pickers, including Bela Fleck, Kenny Ingram, Tom Adams, Steve Martin, and, of course, Earl Scruggs. This standout recording has been named as a Finalist for a Grammy Award in the Bluegrass category.

If you'd like more information on Tony Trischka, visit his website: http://www.tonytrischka.com/ or if you need more information or directions on how to get to the Main Pub, visit http://www.mainpub.com/.

Two chances to see two great shows in January!

There are two top-notch bands coming to the area for some great shows in January. Don't miss your chance to attend one (or both!) of these shows, as we all know how important it is to support live Bluegrass performances in your area. I'll save the sermon this time around, but do make sure you go see Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands along with NewFound Road at one of these locations....

Friday, January 11th - East Hartford Community Cultural Center (www.ehccc.com), 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford (sponsored by the folks who bring you the Podunk Bluegrass Festival every August)
Showtime is 7:15PM, doors open at 6PM. For more info, call (860)528-1458 during regular business hours, or visit their website.

Saturday, January 12th - National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road (Route 2A), Lexington, MA. (sponsored by Boston Bluegrass Union)
Showtime is 7:30PM, doors open at 6:30PM. For directions to this show, call (781)861-6559, or visit http://www.monh.org/.

If you're not familiar with Laurie Lewis, you probably should be. She's been playing her brand of Bluegrass and American folk music for 30+ years. She's been named Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association twice, and has won a Grammy Award. Laurie's band for this show is The Right Hands, and they released a terrific, fairly traditional Bluegrass recording within the last year or so called "The Golden West." If you didn't get a chance to see Laurie and the boys perform at the Joe Val Festival in February of 2007, you really ought to take the opportunity to see her this time around. After all, it's not everyday that she makes the trip east from her San Francisco Bay area home.

Put simply, NewFound Road is "among the most dynamic and thrilling contemporary Bluegrass bands on today's thriving scene" (according to the press release). From experience, I can tell you that they got a terrific response at the showcases in which I saw them at IBMA in October, and their "Life In A Song" recording on Rounder has done extremely well for them.

Don't miss these two fabulous bands either in East Hartford or Lexington!

Another name to add to your Christmas card list....

Folks -

I just read a piece posted yesterday on the Bluegrass Blog suggesting that this year, everyone ought to send a Christmas card to a true Bluegrass legend (a word often overused, but not in this case): Mac Wiseman.

Here's the original post:

Mac Wiseman Christmas card drive
Posted By John On 9th December 2007 @ 10:30

We just got a note from Gary Williams, who hosts the Old Dominion Jamboree on WLEE in Richmond, VA and is one of the founders of VaBluegrass.com Gary is asking everyone to get on board and send a card to one of bluegrass music’s true legends this Christmas season.

Mac Wiseman, at the age of 82, has announced he is retiring from touring. The Old Dominion Jamboree and VaBluegrass.com is asking everyone to show Mac how much we love him and his 63 year contribution to Bluegrass and Country Music by sending him a Christmas card to:

Mr. Mac Wiseman
P.O. Box 17208
Nashville, TN 37217

Of the first generation of Bluegrass musicians, Mac has written, sung and produced music for 63 years. He was vice-president of DOT Records and a founder of the Country Music Association and the first secretary. He gave Lester and Earl a break just when they were ready to call it quits. Let’s all show we appreciate him by taking a few minutes and 41 cents to send him a card.

Have a Merry Christmas by brightening someone else’s!

Add Mac to your card list this year, won't you?

If you're not familiar with the Bluegrass Blog, you probably ought to be. Blog founders and daily contributors, Brance Gillihan and John Lawless, won an IBMA Award this year in the category of "Print Media Person of the Year." Every day, they get information out there on what's new in world of Bluegrass, including recording projects, festivals, and, of course, band changes. Check it out!

And do add the name of Mac Wiseman to your Christmas card list.

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/9/2007

Sunday's show was "Bluegrass, as usual." We had a good number of requests (noted below in RED), and we gave away 5 more CDs in our Christmas blitz to give away 25 CDs in the 5 shows leading to Christmas. Jim & Marti will have 5 more for you next week, so don't despair if you've not won yet.

I'll be with you again on December 23rd, and I suspect we'll be playing a whole bunch of Bluegrass Christmas music for your listening pleasure. If you've got anything special you'd like to hear, by all means, drop us an email at bgcafe@gmail.com, or you can always post a comment on this blog.

I'd venture a guess that Jim & Marti may have a Christmas tune or two for you on the December 16th show, too. Join them!

We commemorated the 41st anniversary of Carter Stanley's death (1 December 1966) with several Stanley Brothers songs, and brought you lots of new music to go along with our classic bluegrass selections.

Thanks for tuning in! Amy will be with you Sunday the 9th.

A note from Gerry Katz about Joe Val reservations....

Well, is the Joe Val Fest. becoming amazingly popular, or what? Online sales began this morning at 7AM for Boston BG Union (BBU) members, and by noon, BBU President Gerry Katz sent out this message:

The Sheraton Framingham is now SOLD OUT (only three hours after the system was open), and we have already sold almost half of all available weekend tickets for the event.

However, there are still hotel rooms available at several nearby hotels – click the link below to go to our hotel page where you can make reservations at our overflow hotels by phone.

www.bbu.org/jvhotel.htm

Get your festival tickets early – based on initial sales we may sell out much more quickly than in past years. More info at
www.bbu.org/jvhome.htm

If you weren't fortunate/quick enough to make your reservations at the Sheraton this AM, you shouldn't feel TOO glum, as there are still other options....

IIIrd Tyme Out in East Hartford -- Friday, 11/30

IIIrd Tyme Out will be appearing this Friday evening, November 30th, at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center, 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford. Doors open at 6PM & showtime is 7:30PM. This seven-time award winning IBMA Vocal Group of the Year has undergone some personnel changes this year, but I'm sure if Russell Moore is still the lead singer -- and he is -- you're going to hear some fabulous Bluegrass. For more info on this show, visit the East Hartford Community Cultural Center website or call (860)282-8241.

The big Canterbury Historical Society fundraiser this weekend....

The last time Massachusetts native David Peterson played in New England, it was the rainiest day in July 2006. In fact, the rain came down at such a clip, Buttery Brook (where the festival was held in South Hadley, MA) started to overflow its banks, as 1946 played on....

This weekend, David returns to New England to play a show that is intended to be a fundraiser for the Canterbury (CT) Historical Society. It may be a bit chilly, but at least it will be DRY.

This show will be held in the Community Room at the Plainfield Town Hall, 8 Community Ave., Plainfield, CT, and starts at 1:30PM. Doors will open at 12:30PM. In addition to David Peterson & 1946, performers on the bill include Shady Creek (always a favorite in southern New England), as well as the old time country trio, the Bristol Boys (featuring some familiar faces in the world of southern New England Bluegrass). The sound will be by Dave Helman of Country Corner Productions.

The Plainfield Town Hall is conveniently located off of Interstate 395 in eastern CT, about 20 minutes north of the casinos. Directions are included below.
Tickets are available at the door, or, if you're in the area, stop by the Canterbury Public Library on Saturday, November 17th from 10AM-4PM to purchase your tickets (and save $5 on the admission price).

If you have questions, call (860)546-9062 or visit the Canterbury Historical Society's website for more details.

Hope to see you there! (Jim will be there, too)!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 11/11/2007

There just isn't enough time.

I'm finding myself constructing these great playlists in my head before going on the air, and just as I hit my stride the three hours are up!

We are fortunate to live at a time when so much of the music of the founders is available, and at the same time so much great new music is being created. It seems we will never have enough time to play everything that deserves to be heard.

That makes your requests very important to us at the Bluegrass Cafe. Not only do we enjoy playing what you ask for, but it allows us to keep our fingers on the pulse of the bluegrass community in Eastern Connecticut (the request line is 860-486-9487), but now the world through the World Wide Web (at whus.org).

Marti and I played a few songs to salute all our veterans on Veterans' Day, and brought you loads of new music from the likes of Bill Emerson, Mountain Heart, Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams, and many many more. We were proud to slip in some J. D. Crowe, Ralph Stanley, Carl Story, and Classic Country Gentlemen along the way.

Next Sunday, 18 November, Jim and Amy will be seeing you at the David Peterson/Nick Anderson/Bristol Boys concert in Plainfield. Dustin will be filling in on the Cafe for those who can't make it to that great event.

See you there!

Jim

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/4/2007

'Tis another month at BG Cafe, and we started it off with the mix of old & new that we enjoy so much. Hope you liked it, too. Included this week was a very short set of tunes in honor of the late Porter Wagoner, who died on October 27th at the age of 80. Porter was a great ambassador for the Grand Ole Opry during his 50 years of membership, and while he wasn't a Bluegrass performer, he certainly was a big supporter and champion of the music. And like so many other country stars of his era, his songbook has been mined by many Bluegrass performers for years.

Jim & Marti join you in the Cafe next Sunday -- be sure to join them!

And don't forget to join all of us at the big BG & Old Country show benefit for the Canterbury Historical Society on Sunday, November 18th. It'll be a big show -- don't miss it!
