"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/27/2024

The last Sunday of January was a dreary, chilly day featuring a wintry mix throughout Connecticut.  Therefore, we thought that a perfect "excuse" for making "W" (for Winter!) our Spotlight Letter of the Week during this day's Bluegrass Cafe.  Surprisingly, there were far more recordings from "W" performers than we had time to play, so it's always possible you may hear more "W" folks again very soon.  For today, we enjoyed music from Roland White to Mac Wiseman, the Warrior River Boys to White Mountain Bluegrass to Jeanette Williams, and more.

While that wasn't really any new music to share this week, we couldn't forget the late January/early February birthdays of a whole bunch of Bluegrass performers, including Lynwood Lunsford, Becky Buller, Del McCoury, Tom Gray, David Parmley, and Jason Carter.

Hope you enjoyed the program today.  There is a possibility that we might get a delayed start next Sunday due to a UConn sports broadcast, but we'll keep you posted on our Facebook page.  Have a wonderful week, and thanks for listening...as always.  :)

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/21/2023

Mid-January is prime time to celebrate some important Bluegrass birthdays, so that was our primary focus during this day's Bluegrass Cafe.

We remembered the January 19th birthdays of several folks, most notably those of Bluegrass Hall of Famer Charlie Waller (January 19, 1935 - August 8, 2004) and Queen of the World Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  Charlie's nearly 50 years as the lead singer/guitarist of the Country Gentlemen were filled with songs that have become Bluegrass standards.  And while Dolly has recorded a couple of what she marketed as "Bluegrass" albums, the fact remains that Dolly is a top-notch songwriter and many of her songs have been covered in the world of Bluegrass.  We also shared many songs in honor of Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo picker, Bill Emerson (January 22, 1938 - August 21, 2021), whose career included being a founding member of the Country Gentlemen, a stint with Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys, partnerships with Cliff Waldron and Pete Goble, and as a bandleader with his own Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie.  Great music.

There were quite a few new songs to share today from performers like Authentic Unlimited, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Jerry Salley, Missy Raines, and a new band called Wood Box Heroes.

Thanks for listening!  Hope you will be sure to join us next Sunday afternoon for our Bluegrass Cafe -- 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/14/2024

Since the first Sunday of 2024 turned out to be a snow day for us here in eastern Connecticut, we spent a good deal of the January 13th edition of our Bluegrass Cafe tying up loose ends from that missed week.  We played a few more songs from recordings issued in 2023, belatedly celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of the one and only Earl Scruggs, and paid tribute to a fine musician and singer who left us too early, Audie Blaylock.

So many tributes have been made since January 6th -- the centennial anniversary of the birthday of one super legend named Earl Eugene Scruggs.  It's difficult to overstate how important this young banjo picker from North Carolina would become in the world of Bluegrass music, and music, in general.  We shared lots of Earl's music on Sunday -- his earliest days with Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, as well as his many years of partnership with Lester Flatt.  We also shared music that Earl made on his own, and where he served as a guest musician with performers such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tom T. Hall, IIIrd Tyme Out, and Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder.  Many hours could be filled with the music of Earl Scruggs, and we will absolutely continue to share his music and his influence during our program.

We also learned this week of the passing of Audie Blaylock.  In addition to being a bandleader of Audie Blaylock & Redline for the last couple of decades, Audie was also a 9-year member of Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys, and worked for a bit with both Rhonda Vincent & the Rage and Michael Cleveland.  We included lots of Audie's music during Sunday's show and enjoyed all of it, as we will for years to come.  Rest in peace.

There wasn't really any brand-new music for us to share this week; instead, we included selections from 2023 releases that we didn't get to play during our December 31st broadcast.  To that end, we heard 2023 music from Sam Bush, Michael Cleveland, Bob & Sarah Amos, the Tim Raybon Band, Jason Carter, the Kody Norris Show, the Dan Tyminski Band, Jody Stecher with Mile Twelve, Rick Faris, East Nash Grass, and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band.

Hope you enjoyed the program, and please be sure to join us for another brand-new Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a fine week.

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/31/2023

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our very last for 2023.  Our spotlight for the show was -- naturally -- on songs from many of the wonderful recordings released during the year.  We also paid tribute to some of the many Bluegrass performers who passed in 2023.  And if all of that wasn't enough to squeeze into a show, we also remembered the late Hank Williams, who died in the back of a car enroute to playing a show in Canton, Ohio on New Year's Day 1953.

Nearly thirty of the fifty-one songs that were played during our broadcast were taken from 2023 recordings.  We still had several more 2023 recordings from which to share music on Sunday, but we just ran out of time.  That music will need to be shared when next we meet.  For Sunday, though, we played music from performers ranging from 2023 award winners,
Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Greg Blake, and Special Consensus to perennial favorites like Larry Sparks, the Gibson Brothers, Dale Ann BradleyJoe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and Rhonda Vincent.  In addition, there were newer (or, new-to-us) bands like the Henhouse Prowlers, Full Cord, Retro 78, and Starlett & Big John.  And there was music from my personal favorite recording for 2023:  "Music In My Soul" from High Fidelity.  It was a fine year for Bluegrass music, and we were happy to share it!

Those we lost in 2023 will never be forgotten.  We couldn't do a year-end show without remembering and honoring the great Jesse McReynolds and Bobby Osborne -- two first-generation members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and mandolin legends.  We also remembered Terry Baucom, Gloria Belle, Bill Castle, Smokey Greene, Mark Kuykendall, John MillerRon Spears, and regional Bluegrass favorites Jack Jolie, Mark Wayne Kitchin, and Jim Sharpley.  Rest in peace.

There would be no Bluegrass Cafe without the support of our wonderful listeners.  Thanks very much to all of you for a fine 2023.  May we all enjoy good health, happiness, and lots more fine Bluegrass in 2024!

Happy New Year!

Amy O.
