"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/24/2016 (plus some "bonus" Bluegrass, too)

It's baseball season at the University of Connecticut, and so, we often don't know if the show will start later than normal or earlier than normal.  Today was a prime example of that, as it turned out that today's game must have ended much earlier than expected, leaving us with 40 minutes "extra" time.  We filled that "bonus" time with a bunch of songs from the great -- and somewhat under-rated -- Reno & Smiley, as well as quite a few other (mostly) classic Bluegrass performers.

Roland White on the mandolin with the Nashville Grass, c. early 1970s.

Our "regular" showtime included a bit of a birthday tribute to the delightful Roland White, who has had himself quite a career in the World of Bluegrass, working with everyone from Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt to the Kentucky Colonels, Country Gazette, and Nashville Bluegrass Band.  What a storied career!  We selected five songs to play from the Roland White Discography, but we could have played plenty more.  For now, though, five songs is a good way to celebrate 78 years of living.

As far as "new" music goes for this week, we shared a couple of tracks from a fine solo recording recently released by Jeff White:  "Right Beside You."  Other new music came to us from Josh Williams, Ron Block, the Hot Flashes, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Kathy Kallick Band, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and the Spinney Brothers.

Hope you were able to join us for today's show, and that you'll be sure to join Jim next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM (more or less, depending on UConn Baseball).

Have a good week!

Amy

Playlist - 4/17/2016

Hi Folks.

The game scheduled to end at our start time ended early giving us an extra 15 minutes, so we slipped in some great instrumentals for the most part with a couple of exceptions to get us to our regular start time.

New music included the debut of the new CD from Marteka and William Lake.  By my count this is their fifth recording, and they are still teens!  The siblings continue to improve on their previous efforts with every new release.  A real jewel on the new CD is "My Native Home" for the vocal by William, but all of the instruments are played to perfection throughout.

Other new or newer music included songs/tunes from Rice & Menzone Alliance, The Po' Ramblin' Boys, Lonesome River Band, The Grascals, The Del McCoury Band, James Reams & The Barnstormers, and The Boxcars.

We gave away one of Loretta Lynn's new CDs and played a track to support the giveaway.  We also gave away a pair of tickets to the May 6th concert by The South Carolina Broadcasters for GuitartownCT.com at the Spaceland Ballroom in Hamden, and played a few tracks from their latest CD over the course of the show.  (Click here for tickets)

For the Heritage Corner, we found a 45 single of Roma Jackson and his Tennessee Pals that Joe Bussard had played on Red Rooster Party in the morning, so we let the bluegrass audience hear it, too.  I now know of two copies of that single.  We also heard a slightly predictive and mostly out-of-date novelty from Charlie Monroe & the Kentucky Pardners about the women taking charge.

Amy will be with you next Sunday to make the banjos and fiddles ring, so please tune in for the best bluegrass you'll find.

I'll be back in spirit on Red Rooster Party next Sunday morning with Marti.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/10/2016

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe began 7 minutes after 4:00PM as the UConn Men's Baseball game ran a bit long.  Still, we accomplished all of the items on our unofficial show "agenda," so hope you enjoyed what you heard!

Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937-April 6, 2016)
More than half of the show was devoted to the music of the "Poet of the Common Man," Country Music Hall of Famer Merle Haggard, who died on April 6th -- his 79th birthday.  Merle Haggard was an incredibly gifted singer, musician, and songwriter, and so very many of his songs have been covered by Bluegrass performers over the years.  Our tribute included twenty-two Haggard songs -- most written by him, but most NOT performed by him this time around.  However, we heard from the Hag on a couple of separate songs, and it's very easy to see what a tremendous influence Merle Haggard had on so many Bluegrass performers...and will continue to have in years to come, no doubt.

We also had a bit of time to play some brand-spanking new music on the show, most notably from the latest from the Del McCoury Band -- an interesting record combining the words of the late Woody Guthrie with music composed by Del McCoury titled (what else?) "Del & Woody."  Two songs from that collection made our playlist today, and doubtless, there will be others in future weeks of Bluegrass Cafe.

And while we have played the title track of the new Spinney Brothers recording ("Living The Dream") on previous shows, on Sunday, we got to share two other songs from this delightful new Mountain Fever Records recording from the Spinneys.

Be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe from 4-7PM, sports preemptions notwithstanding.

Have a great week!

Amy

Playlist - 4/3/2016

Hi Folks.

Our third hour was preempted today for some kind of basketball game that I'm told was important, so we crammed as much music as possible into our two hours remaining.  We were somewhat successful in that we managed 43 songs in that period. That may be a personal record for a two hour span.

The first 1/2 hour was all new music with more showing up in the gospel set.  This included The Rice-Menzone Alliance, Josh Williams, Circa Blue, Dave Adkins, James Reams and The Barnstormers, The Grascals, The Boxcars, Lonesome River Band, Danny Paisley, and Turning Ground.

The remaining time was even more great old solid giant-shouldered traditional bluegrass music.
The preemption schedule at this time looks pretty clear for Bluegrass Cafe for the remainder of April, so be sure to tune in next Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.
