"Bluegrass Cafe" playlst - 3/27/2022

"New" was the word for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  Mind you, we didn't share only the newest Bluegrass music in existence, but it seems like this was the week for several performers to release music -- new bands, Grammy-nominated bands, older bands with new configurations -- no matter, as all of it was pretty top-notch, and gives us something to look forward to for the future Bluegrass in 2022.  This brand-new music came to us from the likes of a new group called Authentic Unlimited, the new configuration of Special Consensus, Woody Platt (minus his Steep Canyon Rangers bandmates), the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and more.   Hope you enjoyed it.

We also opened the phone lines for requests, and surprisingly, I was able to go 3/3, with requests for music from Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys, Ralph Stanley with Dwight Yoakam, and even a Bluegrass-sounding tune from Marty Robbins.  You just never know what folks are going to want to hear.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday.  If you couldn't tune in, there's always next week.  We'll be looking for you from 4-7PM on Sunday afternoon.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/20/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was two weeks in the making, as we took the battle plan for our March 13th show (in which we couldn't get into the Student Union to do any broadcasting) and added a couple of things.  The show included a couple of "Spring" songs, March birthday celebrating and a few new selections, too.  Hope you were able to join us.

As far as the birthdays go, we celebrated the mid-March birthdays of several Bluegrassers, including Bob Paisley, Kristin Scott Benson, Tim O'Brien, Ronnie McCoury, David Grisman, and John Starling.  In addition, there was a second short set of songs written by the wonderful Marshall Wilborn (born March 12, 1952).

Two important members of the Country Music Hall of Fame were celebrated, too:  Carl Smith (March 15, 1927 - January 16, 2010) and Charley Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020).  We heard from both of these legends, as well as several Bluegrass covers of some of their material.

And finally, there was some newer music, too.  This time around, we heard new selections from Laura Orshaw (with Trey Hensley), Donna Ulisse, and the Del McCoury Band.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/13/2022

So, it seems there was a little issue getting into the Student Union at UConn today ~ the building was locked up tight as the UConn students are enjoying their Spring Break this week.  Unfortunately, those of us who are not students didn't get the message, and so, we weren't able to get inside the building.  These things (unfortunately) seem to happen every now and then.  Fortunately, though, in the absence of a "live" show, today's broadcast was a COVID-era recording that originally aired on February 28, 2021.  Hope you enjoyed a revisit.  :)

Hope to be back inside the WHUS studios broadcasting next week.  Until then, have a fine week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/6/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured something that I haven't done in over two years -- a bona fide, live-as-it's-happening telephone interview!  Our interviewee was the delightful Michelle Canning, who told us all about the things she's been doing (writing songs like crazy!) and also, about her upcoming virtual event to benefit the Alzheimer's Foundation of America:  A Night On The Edge.  For more information about the event and all of the other things Michelle is doing, visit Michelle's website (https://michellecanning.net).

The songs we played also included birthday selections in honor of two Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo players who were both born on March 6th:  Don Stover (1928) and Doug Dillard (1937).  Other birthday music celebrated Norman Blake, Rickie Simpkins, Cia Cherryholmes, and the first part of a two-show selection of songs written by the great Marshall Wilborn.

And we remembered Mac Martin, who died on February 28th at the age of 96.  Mr. Martin was a fine purveyor of traditional Bluegrass music in the Pittsburgh, PA area for over 70 years.  Amazing.

We'll look for you once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  Hope you have a fine week!
