Both David Peterson & 1946 and The Bristol Boys will be at the Plainfield Town Hall Sunday, 18 November 2007, along with local favorite Nick Anderson in a benefit for the Canterbury Historical Society. The whole Red Rooster Party and Bluegrass Cafe gang will be there, so we hope to see you.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/21/2007

Well, we had ourselves a busy day at Cafe on Sunday, as we gave away several items: 2 Rounder IBMA 2007 sampler CDs, a copy of the not-yet-released live CD from Mountain Heart, and two passes to this week's concert at the Garde Arts Center in New London featuring Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby. In addition, there were several requests that we were able to fill (and some we were not, too). Thanks to everyone for listening!

Next Sunday is shaping up to be a big one at WHUS. Join Jim & Marti at the Red Rooster Party from 2-4PM as they welcome into the studio the old-time country trio, the Bristol Boys. Then, sometime around 5PM on the Cafe, Jim will be having a phone conversation with David Peterson. If you've been listening to the show at all within the last few months, you may have heard one of us mention a big show coming up on Sunday, November 18th featuring David Peterson & 1946, the Bristol Boys, and Nick Anderson & Shady Creek. For more info on this Canterbury Historical Society event, click here.

Have a good week -

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 10/14/2007

If you were at the Blue Highway concert in East Hartford Saturday night as we were, you understand how excited we were to bring you a Sunday of hard-charging bluegrass music, heavily favoring the new but saluting the classics.

We even tried out a couple of songs on the fringes of bluegrass from the likes of Merle Haggard and Skaggs & Hornsby, and let you decide if they fit the genre. Skaggs & Hornsby will be in concert at the Garde Center in New London 25 October, so this was a good time to acquaint you with the CD they have produced together.

Marti and I hope you liked the show as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.

BEARTRACKS at Country Corner Coffee House -- Saturday, October 20th

The Country Corner Coffee House kicks off its 2007-2008 season with a great show on Saturday, October 20th featuring Beartracks (with Junior Barber). Hailing from upstate New York, this trio features the soulful resonator guitar work of Junior Barber (so notable on those early Gibson Brothers records), as well great sibling harmonies from two of Junior's cousins, Tom Venne & Julie Venne Hogan. These folks do not perform Bill Monroe-style, 100% Bluegrass, but they have a fine sound, and have been crowd favorites at the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in Weston, VT for the past several years. Showtime is 8PM.

For those not familiar with the Country Corner Coffee House, it is actually one of the longest-running old time country & Bluegrass coffee houses in the region. It's held in the South Hadley Falls Congregational Church Fellowship Hall, 5 North Main Street, South Hadley, MA, and is very easy to find. For directions, click here. Dave Helman has been the force behind these great shows -- held every third Saturday from October through April -- and Dave's wife, Rose, is right out front and center getting things done, too. Sound, of course, is by Dave's Country Corner Productions. If you've not yet made the trip to South Hadley, what better time to start than now?

The sound is by Dave Helman of Country Corner Productions.

BLUE HIGHWAY in East Hartford -- Saturday, October 13th

In my opinion, one of the most under-rated bands in Bluegrass is Blue Highway. These guys have been at it for 10+ years, and they seem to get better and better with every recording. Individually, each band member -- Jason Burleson on banjo, Rob Ickes on the Dobro, Shawn Lane on mandolin, fiddle, & vocals, Tim Stafford on guitar & vocals, and Wayne Taylor on bass & vocals -- is top-notch, and as a band, they blend brilliantly.

Blue Highway makes a rare New England appearance on Saturday, October 13th at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center, 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford. Doors open at 6PM and the show starts at 7:30PM. For more information or directions to EHCCC, click here or call (860)282-8241 during normal business hours. Tickets are $23 at the door.
Also coming to EHCCC this week: the Claire Lynch Band appears on Wednesday, October 17th. Doors open at 6PM, showtime is 7:30PM. Tickets are $20 at the door.

CTBMA at Canterbury Historical Society...TONIGHT!

Members of the CT Bluegrass Music Association will present a "crash course" on Bluegrass music -- Where'd it come from? Who's the "Father of Bluegrass?" What are the Bluegrass instruments? -- tonight for the October meeting of the Canterbury Historical Society. The meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Canterbury Town Hall, One Municipal Drive, Canterbury, CT. Admission is FREE and open to the public. The business meeting starts at 7PM, and will be followed by the CTBMA presentation about 7:30PM. If you have friends who are new to the BG, or if you'd like to learn a bit more yourself, come on out and see this CTBMA presentation. These folks, led by CTBMA President Kim Cyr, have been presenting this program in many schools and libraries throughout CT for the past several years, and I can tell you from past experience that this is a terrific introduction to Bluegrass. Please come on out and join us!

Now, a bit of fine print: one of the other hats I wear away from the "Bluegrass Cafe" is that I'm the current President of the Canterbury Historical Society. Normally, at our monthly meetings, we have speakers come in to inform and educate us about historical topics, but isn't Bluegrass music historical? It's certainly 100% American, and what better way to get folks fired up for our November 18th show (more to be posted on that later on...)

If you'd like more information on tonight's presentation, click here, or call (860)617-0394.

Hope to see you in Canterbury tonight....

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/7/2007

Howdy -

After spending the better part of last week in Nashville attending some of the IBMA festivities, I was fired up to do the show this past Sunday. Many of the songs I chose to play were from bands I saw performing in various showcases at IBMA -- hope you enjoyed what you heard. Into the mix, we added a few of your requests (noted in RED), as well as a tune from the much-anticipated new Bluegrass recording by Country Music Hall of Famer Merle Haggard, new music from Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, Bill Emerson & the Sweet Dixie Band, Massachusetts band Dan Helman & Marking Time, as well as a group called Balsam Range, and a few tunes from various winners of IBMA Awards for 2007.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 9/30/07 (abbreviated)

UCONN soccer took over WHUS for most of the afternoon and it knocked off the entire Red Rooster Party and nearly two hours of Bluegrass Cafe. For those of you who caught our last and only hour, thanks for your perseverance, and I hope you enjoyed my selection of mostly new music.

About that music: Sunday was one year since Josh Graves passed away (and last Thursday would have been his 79th birthday). It was also Marty Stuart's 49th birthday, and the 49th anniversary of the first recording of The Stanley Brothers' "How Mountain Girls Can Love." We honored all these events with appropriate songs by and about these artists.

We also debuted the new CD from Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time by playing a track written by Chris Stuart about "The First Train Robbery."

I think Amy is back next week, so be sure to tune in for more of the best in bluegrass music!
