"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/28/2012

Hi Folks.

With Halloween looming, a few songs with ghostly and ghoulish themes showed up in this playlist, such as Ted Lundy's "It Rained A Mist" (suggested last year by Dick Bowden), "Simpson's Holler" by Valerie Smith, the "Long Black Veil" sequel from Akira Otsuka called "Long Black Jacket," "Arkansas Line" from The Earl Brothers, Larry Cordle's "Pud Marcum's Hangin'," the classic "Bringing Mary Home" from Eddie and Martha Adcock, and for fun, The Stanley Brothers' "My Long Skinny Lanky Sarah Jane."

Early in the show we had an in-studio visit from Laura LaCour and Nanette Addesso, the lead and backup singers respectively of a new stage production called "Always... Patsy Cline" which features 27 numbers, nearly all Patsy Cline songs.  Laura and Nanette performed one of Patsy's songs, "Leavin' On Your Mind," to give us a hint of what is in store, and it was fine indeed.  This show is not to be missed.  A production of The Windham Theatre Guild, the show plays in Willimantic at the Burton Leavitt Theatre, 779 Main Street November 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, & 17 after opening the 2nd and 3rd.

We remembered Connie Gately with his song "Home Is Where The Heart Is" following his death earlier in the week.

J.E. Mainer (1898-1971) made a musical appearance to celebrate his induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame October 11th -- an event I was fortunate to attend.

New music abounded including songs from Danny Paisley, Grasstowne, Lonesome River Band, Cumberland Gap Connection, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers, David Peterson, Volume Five, Jett's Creek, Larry Gillis, Ricky Skaggs, and the surprising debut of Ashley Lilly, granddaughter of Everett Lilly, with The Sleepy Man Banjo Boys.

The Heritage Corner archives, besides the aforementioned Ted Lundy and J.E. Mainer songs, provided music from The Blue Sky Boys (Bill Bolick's birthday 10/28), Red Smiley, and Red White & His Dixie Blue Grass Band.

Amy will be with you the first Sunday in November, so be sure to tune in to hear the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/21/2012

Hi Folks.

Back from a five-week absence, I had quite a load of new music to share with Bluegrass Cafe listeners.

But first we saluted the late Grandpa Jones who would have had a birthday October 20, and later Merle Watson who died 27 years ago this month, Clay Jones who has a birthday this week, and the late Snuffy Jenkins who would have had a birthday this week.

New music carried the day, however, beginning with American Drive -- the continuation of J.D. Crowe's band as J.D. retires this year.  Ricky Skaggs performed his new song about the invulnerability of ham, and then we brought you songs from bands discovered at the IBMA World of Bluegrass last month, including Finnders and Youngberg, Circa Blue, Hard Road Trio, Dennis Cash, and Detour.  Also presented was new music from Siamese Cousins, The Lonesome River Band, David Peterson, The Roys, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers, Darrell Webb, Nu-Blu, Kevin Carter and Full Assurance, Mickey Boles, Del & DawgThe Grass Cats, and the spectacular new traditional offering from Danny Paisley.

Other newer music came from Nightflyer, Bob Amos, Karl Shiflett, Jeff Parker, Audie BlaylockLarry Gillis, and Balsam Range.

Whew!

The Heritage Corner explored the original version of Earl's Breakdown, and we played Mark Johnson's original recording of Forked Deer with Tony Rice from his first "Clawgrass" album to salute his recent awarding of the Steve Martin Excellence in Banjo Prize.

I've got more new music to bring to the airwaves next Sunday, so tune in at 4pm ET where I'll be back with more of the best in new bluegrass, and a visit with Maine songwriter Stan Keach.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/14/2012

A week after a show with a special guest, we returned to "business as usual" for today's edition of the Bluegrass Cafe.  Generally, my goal for the show is to include a good mix of older tunes with a healthy portion of new music, and I think that goal was accomplished today.  I hope so, anyway...

Bill Monroe first recorded his tribute to
Uncle Pen (with fiddle) on 10/15/1950.
Folks who don't listen to Bluegrass music may not know too much about Bill Monroe, but a lot of them are probably still familiar with one of Bill Monroe's most autobiographical numbers -- a song he first recorded for Decca Records in a session on October 15, 1950:  "Uncle Pen."  Monroe's uncle, Pendleton Vandiver, was an old-time Kentucky fiddler who clearly had a big impact on his nephew, especially after Bill Monroe went to live with him as a teenager.  Years later, Monroe wanted to honor his uncle, so he wrote "Uncle Pen" in a fine tribute to him.  Monroe recorded "Uncle Pen" more than once throughout his career, and while the song has been recorded more than 50 times by other performers through the years, it was the 1984 version by Ricky Skaggs that reached the #1 position on the Billboard Country charts.  During today's program, we played both the original version and the Skaggs version.  I wonder if Bill Monroe could have conceived that his tribute to his fiddle-playing uncle would still be so well known 62 years after it was first recorded?

Added bonus:  it's pretty impossible to find video of the original version of Blue Grass Boys who recorded "Uncle Pen" in 1950, here's a YouTube clip from 1956 featuring the great Bobby Hicks on the fiddle:

David Peterson last visited the WHUS studios in May 2010.
While we featured a good bit of new music, our "spotlight" new recording was one from Massachusetts native, David Peterson.  Although Dave hasn't lived in New England for many years, he still comes to this part of the world to perform a couple of times a year, and during his last trip to perform in Hamden, he sort of previewed this new recording.  While David's recordings have been mostly ones that feature traditional Bluegrass or classic country music, on this CD -- Dave is calling it "Simplicity" -- the music is pretty much David Peterson:  his voice and his guitar.  There are a few other instruments added in the mix on a couple of songs, but mostly it's just David Peterson picking and singing.  Very enjoyable!  Be sure to listen for more music from this fine recording in future weeks of the Bluegrass Cafe.

Other new music (from CDs released in 2012) came from recordings by Loafers' Glory, Lou Reid & Carolina, the Kathy Kallick Band, Larry Stephenson, Balsam Range, Marty Raybon, American Drive, Detour, the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, the Grascals, Tim O'Brien & Darrell Scott, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Hot Mustard, the Spinney Brothers, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, Nu-Blu, and Ricky Skaggs.

Hope you enjoyed today's show, and that you'll be sure to join Jim in the BG Cafe next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/7/2012

Even at an October 2008 show, the Gibsons
were definitely entertaining.
To my mind, Sunday's show was a fun one for a couple of different reasons.  For one, it was my first "Bluegrass Cafe" in nearly a month, as I was last on the WHUS airwaves back on September 9th.  For another, my brain was still "fresh" with all of the great BG I heard last week in Nashville during the IBMA festivities.  The biggest reason for a fun show, I thought, was that I got to have an on-air visit with one of the big winners at last week's IBMA Awards:  one of the newly-crowned Entertainers of the Year, Eric Gibson of the Gibson Brothers.

The Gibson Brothers perform at the September 27, 2012
IBMA Awards (photo by Ted Lehmann)

Over the last several years at "BG Cafe," Eric has been our on-air guest numerous times -- no great surprise, really, if you consider how very popular the Gibson Brothers are in this part of the world.  Since around 1994 (and probably even a bit earlier), the Gibsons have been playing at festivals all over New England, so this is a community that has had a long appreciation of the brother-style duet perfected by these brothers from Ellenburg Depot, NY.  Now, it seems like the rest of the BG world has also become great appreciators of this fine band.  Being in the Ryman Auditorium on September 27th when the Gibsons won two IBMA Awards -- both Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year with Ricky Skaggs for "Singing As We Rise" and the top prize of Entertainer of the Year -- was a real joy for this long-time Gibson listener.  In fact, in an IBMA week filled with terrific moments, this was a definite highlight.  Big congratulations to Eric, Leigh, Mike, Clayton, and Joe, and thanks to Eric for coming on the show once more to talk about how it feels to be a newly-minted Entertainer of the Year, as well as a few other topics.

If you'd like to read a bit more about the IBMA Awards, be sure to check out the Gibson Brothers as cover boys on the latest IBMA newsletter, International Bluegrass, or visit BG blogger Ted Lehmann's terrific post with photos taken during the IBMA Awards:  http://www.tedlehmann.blogspot.com/2012/10/ibma-w-of-b-2012-awards.html

There were, of course, other great moments at IBMA, and we tried to shine a bit of a spotlight on a few of them, too.  We heard music from IBMA Award winners Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out (Russell took home his fifth Male Vocalist of the Year prize this year), as well as 5-time Female Vocalist of the Year, Dale Ann Bradley.  The IBMA Awards this year were big for first-time winners, too, as Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice took home prizes for both Album of the Year ("The Heart Of A Song" on Rebel Records), and Song of the Year for "A Far Cry From Lester And Earl."  Another big, first-time winner was Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, who were recognized as the Emerging Act of the Year.  To that end, we shared a couple of tunes from their soon-to-be-released new Rebel Records recording, "They're Playing My Song."

IBMA is a lot more than just the awards show, of course.  During the week, I got to see a good number of bands performing that I'd either never heard in person before, or just don't get to see too often.  Several of them have new or newish material, too, so it worked out well to share it on the air on Sunday.  To that end, we heard music from Eddie & Martha Adcock with Tom Gray, the Spinney BrothersMark Houser & Bluegrass Drive, Robin & Linda Williams, Breaking Grass, the Bankesters, the Darrell Webb Band, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, the Special Consensus, and NH/VT band, Hot Mustard.  We also heard a song from a new recording from the Kathy Kallick Band, as well as a tune from a band that essentially is the New South minus J.D. Crowe:  American Drive.  This band (Rickey Wasson, Dwight McCall, Matt DeSpain, and Kyle Perkins of the New South, plus banjo picker Justin Jenkins) made its formal debut at IBMA, and the future looks promising, as American Drive's Rural Rhythm Records self-titled debut will be released on October 16th.

Many thanks to James and Cathy Ward for filling in for both Jim and I over the last two Sundays.  Be sure to join them for more BG on WHUS, as their one-hour program called, "Bluegrass Rules" airs on Tuesday afternoons at 3PM.  I hope you heard something you enjoyed on Sunday's show, and I hope you'll be sure to join me once again next Sunday for another music-packed edition of the "Bluegrass Cafe."

Have a great week!
