A note from Gerry Katz about Joe Val reservations....

Well, is the Joe Val Fest. becoming amazingly popular, or what? Online sales began this morning at 7AM for Boston BG Union (BBU) members, and by noon, BBU President Gerry Katz sent out this message:

The Sheraton Framingham is now SOLD OUT (only three hours after the system was open), and we have already sold almost half of all available weekend tickets for the event.

However, there are still hotel rooms available at several nearby hotels – click the link below to go to our hotel page where you can make reservations at our overflow hotels by phone.

www.bbu.org/jvhotel.htm

Get your festival tickets early – based on initial sales we may sell out much more quickly than in past years. More info at
www.bbu.org/jvhome.htm

If you weren't fortunate/quick enough to make your reservations at the Sheraton this AM, you shouldn't feel TOO glum, as there are still other options....

IIIrd Tyme Out in East Hartford -- Friday, 11/30

IIIrd Tyme Out will be appearing this Friday evening, November 30th, at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center, 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford. Doors open at 6PM & showtime is 7:30PM. This seven-time award winning IBMA Vocal Group of the Year has undergone some personnel changes this year, but I'm sure if Russell Moore is still the lead singer -- and he is -- you're going to hear some fabulous Bluegrass. For more info on this show, visit the East Hartford Community Cultural Center website or call (860)282-8241.

The big Canterbury Historical Society fundraiser this weekend....

The last time Massachusetts native David Peterson played in New England, it was the rainiest day in July 2006. In fact, the rain came down at such a clip, Buttery Brook (where the festival was held in South Hadley, MA) started to overflow its banks, as 1946 played on....

This weekend, David returns to New England to play a show that is intended to be a fundraiser for the Canterbury (CT) Historical Society. It may be a bit chilly, but at least it will be DRY.

This show will be held in the Community Room at the Plainfield Town Hall, 8 Community Ave., Plainfield, CT, and starts at 1:30PM. Doors will open at 12:30PM. In addition to David Peterson & 1946, performers on the bill include Shady Creek (always a favorite in southern New England), as well as the old time country trio, the Bristol Boys (featuring some familiar faces in the world of southern New England Bluegrass). The sound will be by Dave Helman of Country Corner Productions.

The Plainfield Town Hall is conveniently located off of Interstate 395 in eastern CT, about 20 minutes north of the casinos. Directions are included below.
Tickets are available at the door, or, if you're in the area, stop by the Canterbury Public Library on Saturday, November 17th from 10AM-4PM to purchase your tickets (and save $5 on the admission price).

If you have questions, call (860)546-9062 or visit the Canterbury Historical Society's website for more details.

Hope to see you there! (Jim will be there, too)!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 11/11/2007

There just isn't enough time.

I'm finding myself constructing these great playlists in my head before going on the air, and just as I hit my stride the three hours are up!

We are fortunate to live at a time when so much of the music of the founders is available, and at the same time so much great new music is being created. It seems we will never have enough time to play everything that deserves to be heard.

That makes your requests very important to us at the Bluegrass Cafe. Not only do we enjoy playing what you ask for, but it allows us to keep our fingers on the pulse of the bluegrass community in Eastern Connecticut (the request line is 860-486-9487), but now the world through the World Wide Web (at whus.org).

Marti and I played a few songs to salute all our veterans on Veterans' Day, and brought you loads of new music from the likes of Bill Emerson, Mountain Heart, Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams, and many many more. We were proud to slip in some J. D. Crowe, Ralph Stanley, Carl Story, and Classic Country Gentlemen along the way.

Next Sunday, 18 November, Jim and Amy will be seeing you at the David Peterson/Nick Anderson/Bristol Boys concert in Plainfield. Dustin will be filling in on the Cafe for those who can't make it to that great event.

See you there!

Jim

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/4/2007

'Tis another month at BG Cafe, and we started it off with the mix of old & new that we enjoy so much. Hope you liked it, too. Included this week was a very short set of tunes in honor of the late Porter Wagoner, who died on October 27th at the age of 80. Porter was a great ambassador for the Grand Ole Opry during his 50 years of membership, and while he wasn't a Bluegrass performer, he certainly was a big supporter and champion of the music. And like so many other country stars of his era, his songbook has been mined by many Bluegrass performers for years.

Jim & Marti join you in the Cafe next Sunday -- be sure to join them!

And don't forget to join all of us at the big BG & Old Country show benefit for the Canterbury Historical Society on Sunday, November 18th. It'll be a big show -- don't miss it!
