"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/27/2020

Happy Fall!  It's the last Sunday of September -- hope you enjoyed it!

As this is the time of year when the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) holds their big World Of Bluegrass events in Raleigh, North Carolina, we geared the first hour of our program toward some IBMA things:  music from some of the nominees in two categories, and a look back at some of the "Song of the Year" award winners since the awards began in 1990.  This year's conference and various awards programs and musical presentations have all moved online in this COVID-19 year of 2020, so if you've always thought you might like to check out IBMA, but could not get to the conference, this year is your chance.  For more information, visit this link to World of Bluegrass.  Do it soon, though, as the IBMA festivities begin September 28th and run through October 3rd!  [The photos included here were taken during WoB events in 2019 in Raleigh].

Our second hour included a whole lot of Bluegrass classics, as well as a few newer selections from several bands, including the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Phil Leadbetter & the All-Stars of Bluegrass, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Merle Monroe, and the Grascals.  Other 2020 releases from which we heard included songs from Balsam Range, Laurie Lewis, Special Consensus, Becky Buller, Stephen Mougin, RockHearts, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, High Fidelity, Junior Sisk, and the Feinberg Brothers.

As you know, these shows are now pre-recorded, and sometimes, things get overlooked.  To that end, we will definitely be hearing the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriter winners very soon, as early possibly as next week.  Stay tuned...

Thanks so much for listening, and we'll look forward to visiting with you once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week ~ stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/20/2020

The twenty-second pre-recorded edition of our Bluegrass Cafe paid tribute in a Bluegrass style to three of the most influential country music singers of the 20th century, all of whom were born in month of September:  Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992), Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953), and George Jones (September 12, 1931 - April 26, 2013).  While the main focus of our program is Bluegrass music, it would be silly to think that no Bluegrass performers have ever been influenced by the music of any of these Country Music Hall of Famers.  In fact, the opposite is true.  Therefore, we gathered as many Bluegrass covers of songs performed and/or written by these three as time would allow, and we celebrated some birthdays in a musical way.

During the program, I promised to share some book titles for those of you who might like to read biographies or autobiographies.  This is not an exhaustive bibliography of works about these musicians, but here are a few titles to get you started:

    ROY ACUFF:

Schlappi, Elizabeth.  Roy Acuff:  The Smoky Mountain Boy.  (Pelican Publishing     Company, 1983)

    GEORGE JONES:

Isenhour, Jack.  He Stopped Loving Her Today:  George Jones, Billy Sherrill,
And The Pretty-Much Totally True Story Of The Making Of The Greatest Country
    Record Of All Time.
  (University of Mississippi Press, 2011)

Jones, George with Tom Carter.  I Lived To Tell It All.  (Dell, 1997)

Kienzle, Rich.  The Grand Tour:  The Life And Music Of George Jones.  (Dey        Street, 2016)

    HANK WILLIAMS:

Escott, Colin.  Hank Williams:  The Biography.  (Little, Brown & Co., 1994)

Hemphill, Paul.  Lovesick Blues:  The Life Of Hank Williams.  (Viking, 2005)

Ribowsky, Mark.  Hank:  The Short Life And Long Country Road Of Hank                Williams.  (Liveright, 2017)

Newer Bluegrass music also was shared during the program, including 2020 selections from Rock Hearts, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, High Fidelity, Balsam Range, the Kody Norris Show, Carolina Blue, and J.B. & Jamie Dailey.

Have a wonderful week, and thanks for listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/13/2020

As this week's Bluegrass Cafe happens to fall on the 109th birth anniversary of William Smith Monroe -- the Father of Bluegrass Music -- it seemed like the proverbial "no-brainer" to make the music of Bill Monroe the one-and-only focus of today's Bluegrass Cafe.  And so we did.  :)  The full three hours of our
program were filled with songs about Bill Monroe, songs performed by Bill Monroe (and some covers of his music, of course), and songs written by Bill Monroe.  Hope you enjoyed what we shared!

We always like to inform you about things you can read to learn more about particular subjects, and Bill Monroe has been the subject of a couple of different biographies (two written for adults; one an illustrated picture book biography for kids).  Seek out these books if you are interested in knowing more about the man and his music:

Can't You Hear Me Callin':  The Life Of Bill Monroe, Father Of Bluegrass Music by Richard D. Smith (Little, Brown & Co., 2000)

Bill Monroe:  The Life And Music Of The Blue Grass Man by Tom Ewing (University of Illinois Press, 2018)

Blue Grass Boy:  The Story Of Bill Monroe, Father Of Bluegrass Music by Barb Rosenstock with illustrations by Edwin Fotheringham (Calkins Creek, 2018)

Special mention:  we included a birthday celebration within a birthday celebration, as today also happens to be the birthdate of Lou Reid (born September 13, 1954).  To that end, we shared Monroe songs that Lou Reid has recorded over the years with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, as a guest on a recording by Mark Newton & Larry Stephenson, and with his own band, Lou Reid & Carolina.

Hope you enjoyed today's Monroe-centric broadcast.  If you have any questions or comments during our pre-recorded programs, please don't hesitate to send an email to bgcafe@gmail.com or give our Facebook page a like (www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe)

Have a great week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/6/2020

And just like that, we've reached Labor Day weekend!  Hope you are enjoying your holiday weekend with some relaxation and maybe even enjoying some Bluegrass music!

Sunday's show began with some "working" songs, and our gospel ho
urs included some songs loosely associated with working, too.

We belatedly celebrated the birthday of

the Queen of Country Music,
Kitty Wells (born August 30, 1919) with a few
Bluegrass covers, and we couldn't forget the birthday of Buzz Busby-- the "Father Of Washington DC Bluegrass" -- who was born on September 6, 1933.

There was a smattering of new music to share this Labor Day weekend, as well, as we heard new music from J.B. & Jamie Dailey, Stephen Mougin, the F
einberg Brothers, Linda Lay, Hammertowne, Junior Sisk, and High Fidelity.

Enjoy the week ~ and thanks for listening!
