"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/30/2018

On this last Sunday of September, we celebrated a few of the winners of the 2018 International Bluegrass Music Awards, as well as sent out birthday tributes to two Martys:  one who turned 60 on September 30th (Marty Stuart), and one who is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and never reached the age of 60, but still left a legacy of wonderful music (Marty Robbins, born September 25, 1926).  Hope you were able to join us!

IBMA Entertainers of the Year, Balsam Range, played at the
2018 Podunk Bluegrass Festival (minus mandolin player, Darren Nicholson).
Among the 2018 IBMA winners from whom we heard we music, there was Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, the Special Consensus, Molly Tuttle, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Brooke Aldridge, Balsam Range, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Ned Luberecki, and Becky Buller.  We also included music from three new members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Ricky Skaggs, Tom T. Hall, and Paul Williams.

Other 2018 music was on the playlist, too, with selections from Alan Munde & Billy Bright, the Feinberg Brothers, the Kathy Kallick Band, the tribute record to John Duffey, the King James Boys, David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, Hot Rize, the Earls Of Leicester, and Nothin' Fancy.

Thanks for listening, and have a good week!  We'll look for you one hour earlier next Sunday:  3-7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/16/2018

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated the September birthdays of two country music legends:  Roy Acuff (born September 15, 1903) and Hank Williams (born September 17, 1923).  What's the best way to celebrate these icons of American music?  By playing LOTS of different Bluegrass versions of a few of their songs as recorded by some top-notch Bluegrass performers, of course.  Hope you agree!

Two new CDs arrived in our mailbox this week, and while we had played songs from each of the records on the air before, it's always good to see the full project.  We will be enjoying music from these two new discs -- the Earls of Leicester record, "Live At The CMA Theater In The Country Music Hall Of Fame and "Horrible World" by the Kathy Kallick Band.  Other 2018 releases to air this week included selections from Alan Munde & Billy Bright, Rudi Ekstein, the John Duffey tribute recording, and High Fidelity.

Hope to see you next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  Until then, have a fine week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/9/2018

Akira Otsuka with his "Epilogue" CD.
We devoted a good portion of Sunday's show listening to music from one of my favorite recordings of 2018:  "Epilogue:  A Tribute To John Duffey" on Smithsonian Folkways.  John Duffey was a larger-than-life Personality (capital P is intentional) in the World of Bluegrass Music, and this tribute record released nearly 22 years after his passing is a dandy which features more than 50 performers.  The album's co-producer, Akira Otsuka, is a fine musician, and was a great friend and admirer of John Duffey.  He also was our mid-show telephone guest, and we were honored to talk to him about this great record.  Fun stuff!

This kids' book about Big Mon was published in March 2018.
During this second week of September, there were quite a few birthdays to celebrate, including those of Paul Adkins, James King, Bill Harrell, and Lou Reid.  Of course, there is another very important Bluegrass birthday to celebrate this week -- that of the Father Of Bluegrass Music.  Bill Monroe was born on September 13, 1911, and so, we played all Monroe-penned or Monroe-recorded gospel tunes at the end of the show.  We may celebrate Big Mon a bit more in next Sunday's show, too.

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and will consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.
