"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/13/2006

Today's show stuck to our usual format: 3 big hours of lots of newer & older Bluegrass. We also drew four names of folks who will be sent various prizes from WHUS, including a "Bluegrass Cafe" t-shirt, as well as 3 separate CDs. We took these names from those entries submitted at the WHUS tent during the Podunk BG Festival last weekend in East Hartford. Myrna spent a good portion of the afternoon trying to call our winners; maybe we'll post their names in the future. I got to do "double duty" on the air on Sunday, as Jim & Marti let me sit in on their Red Rooster Party (airs every Sunday on WHUS from 2-4PM). It was a tremendous amount of fun for me to spin some of those older country tunes, everything from the Carter Family & Jimmie Rodgers to the honky tonk sounds of the 50s from Carl Smith, Ray Price, Webb Pierce, and Ernest Tubb, to the Bakersfield Sound from Buck Owens, Don Rich, Tommy Collins, and Merle Haggard. If you listen to BG, you know that any number of performers still love those old country songs -- why else would they choose to cover so many of these older tunes on their recordings? Whatever their reasoning, it works for me....
