"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/23/2021

On this gorgeous May 23rd, we celebrated what would have been the 95th birthday of Country and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Mac Wiseman (May 23, 1925 - February 24, 2019) with a whole lot of his music.  What better way to remember "The Voice With A Heart?"

We also celebrated the birthdays of husband-and-wife Bluegrass Hall of Fame members, Tom T. Hall (born May 25, 1936) and Miss Dixie Hall (May 26, 1934 - January 16, 2015) with a full hour's worth of music from their creative minds.  Of course, we could have filled several shows with the music of these two amazingly talented folks, but we limited ourselves to just one hour's worth on Sunday.

There was a tiny bit of newer music to share, as well, with selections from Balsam Range, Lou Reid, Eddie Sanders, Linda Lay, Nick Chandler & Delivered, Deanie Richardson, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, and the "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" collection.

Hope you had a lovely Sunday!  We hope you'll join us once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/16/2021

For Sunday's radio show, we remembered the music of a fine country music duo of the 1950s, celebrated the shared birthday of three members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and included new music from two fine Bluegrass gospel recordings.  Hope you were able to join us!

Brothers-in-law Johnnie Wright (May 13, 1914 - September 27, 2011) and Jack Anglin (May 13, 1916 - March 8, 1963) performed together as a duo called Johnnie & Jack.  Their music was fun, and several of their songs have been covered in the world of Bluegrass over the years.

There were selections from several Bluegrass birthday celebrants, including from three Bluegrass Hall of Famers who were all born on May 17th:  fiddler Paul Warren (with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys), Red Smiley (of Reno & Smiley), and Rodney Dillard of the Dillards.

And there were two new Bluegrass gospel recordings added to the mix this week with selections from both Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers ("Somewhere Beyond The Blue" on Billy Blue Records) and Larry Sparks ("Ministry In Song" on Rebel Records).  Other 2021 music on the show came from Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Deanie Richardson, Jesse Brock, and the "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" collection.

Have a fine week, and we hope you'll consider tuning in once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Take care -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/9/2021

Mother & Daughter at Opryland, 1985
Hello, and Happy Mother's Day!  On this day devoted to Mom, hope you were able to enjoy some kind of celebration with your mother, if that is something you like and are able to do.  :)  During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated both living mothers and mothers who live on in memory with twenty-seven tunes, so hope you heard something you enjoyed among those tunes.

Today also happens to be the birth anniversary of Clarence Eugene Snow -- better known to the Country Music World

Hank Snow (May 9, 1914 - December 20, 1999)

as
Hank Snow (May 9, 1914 - December 20, 1999).  Though he had a pretty wretched childhood while growing up with an abusive stepfather in Nova Scotia, Canada, Hank Snow certainly made his mark in the world of Country Music with a nearly 50-year-membership at the Grand Ole Opry, enshrinement in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and dozens of hit records which have become classics.  Hank Snow songs are still often covered by Bluegrass performers, too, so we heard a whole bunch of them in our extended Hank Snow set.

There was a tiny bit of newer music to share, as well, with selections from Matt Dudman, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass.

Thanks for listening!  Hope you'll consider joining us once more next Sunday afternoon - 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/2/2021

Here it is:  "home-made" show #54 of our Bluegrass Cafe!  It seems I was off by one number when I recorded this show, but who's really counting anyway, right?  :)  Sunday's show featured the usual mix of classic and newer Bluegrass, and we even showcased a few songs for blue-eyed listeners.

There wasn't too much brand-new music to share this week, but we did include a couple more selections from the hot-off-the-presses Pinecastle debut release for the ever-popular Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass:  "Bluegrass Troubadour."  In addition, there was a track from a new fiddle recording by Deanie Richardson, and recent music from the "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" recording (from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Mo Pitney with Merle Monroe), the Kody Norris Show, and Marty Raybon.

There's a slight possibility our show will air slightly later on Mother's Day (May 9th), but we'll be sure to let you know.  Until then, enjoy the week, and thanks for listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/25/2021

Our 52nd "homemade" Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole lot of fine Bluegrass music of both the classic and newer variety.  Hope you were able to join us!

"Norman Otto Namron" -- a mandolin
picker well-known to Phil Zimmerman

We shared several songs featuring the late Phil Zimmerman -- a Connecticut musician who passed on April 23rd.  Phil was an enthusiastic performer with several bands over the years (including Traver Hollow, from whom we heard several selections), and was also a top-notch photographer who travelled to many of the first Bluegrass festivals in the 1960s.  Phil recently made a generous donation of his Bluegrass photographs and ephemera to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame so that future generations will be able to enjoy his works.  Click on this link to read a fine remembrance of Phil Zimmerman and his works.

There was some good newer music to be heard during Sunday's broadcast, too, including selections from the Industrial Strength Bluegrass recording, Eddie Sanders, Matt Dudman, Dale Ann Bradley, Amanda Cook, Lakeside, Greg Blake, Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and a couple of tracks from the brand new recording from Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass.

Thanks for listening, and please consider joining me once more next Sunday, won't you?  4-7PM is the time and WHUS is the place.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/18/2021

If you are a fan of the music of the Louvin Brothers, today would have been a fine day to check our Bluegrass Cafe!  We played loads of Louvin tunes (covers and the Louvins, themselves) in honor of the birth anniversary of elder brother, Ira Louvin (April 21, 1924 - June 20, 1965).  We also celebrated the upcoming birthday of Bluegrass Hall of Famer Doyle Lawson (born April 20, 1944), and enjoyed lots more music, classic and new.  Hope you were able to join us!

Friendly reminder:  if you are a songwriter, the deadline for the 2021 Podunk Songwriters Contest is rapidly approaching.  Look for everything you need to know by clicking here.

While there wasn't quite as much brand-new music to showcase during this week's program, we still shared a few new (and new-to-us) tunes from the Industrial Strength Bluegrass compilation on Smithsonian Folkways, Nick Chandler & Delivered, Nu-Blu, Unspoken Tradition, Jason Davis (with Dan Tyminski), the Kody Norris Show, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, and Alan Bibey & Grasstowne.

Thanks so much for joining us for this session in our Bluegrass Cafe, and we will look forward to seeing you again next week, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/11/2021

During our 50th (!) "homemade" edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, we shared a whole bunch of brand-new music for 2021, as well as a few classic favorites, and a dozen-song tribute to the "Poet of the Common Man" - Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016).  Hope you were able to join us!

It seems that many Bluegrass performers have been recording while they haven't been able to play to live audiences, so that means we have a whole lot of new music to enjoy.  To that end, we shared selections from the brand new "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" collection from Smithsonian Folkways, as well as songs from forthcoming or recently-released recordings by the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Marty Raybon, Audie Blaylock & Redline, the Kody Norris Show, Merle Monroe, Lou Reid, Bobby Osborne, Rick Faris, Barry Abernathy, Carolyn Eyerly, and the Grascals.  Phew!

We couldn't let the birth anniversary of the great Merle Haggard pass without remembering his wonderful music, so we did that, mostly in a Bluegrass style.  Many performers over the years have recorded music from the Hag Songbook, but we chose tunes from Lost & Found, Jim Mills, Linda Lay, the Gibson Brothers, Beartracks, the Spinney Brothers, the Big Dogs with Tony Trischka, Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams, Rickey Wasson & J.D. Crowe, and the Ernie Thacker-Junior Blankenship Band.

Hope you have wonderful week, and do consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Take good care -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/4/2021

Happy Easter!  Hope you are enjoying a safe, socially-distanced holiday with family and friends!

Our Bluegrass Cafe for this day included (of course) a full hour's worth of Easter-themed Bluegrass music.  There have been a good number of songs recorded with an Easter theme, so hope we were able to play one of your favorites.

We remembered a wonderful Bluegrass performer in song -- Hazel McGee of White Mountain Bluegrass -- as she was born on April 2, 1941.  Sadly, Hazel died on October 27, 2014 after a long battle with cancer, but anyone who ever heard White Mountain Bluegrass perform live knows that this band was incredibly important in the history of Bluegrass, especially here in New England.  We shared several songs featuring her strong lead vocals.

There was a bit of newer Bluegrass to share, too, including several selections from
the brand-new "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" CD on Smithsonian Folkways, as well as single tunes from
Jesse Brock, Doyle Lawson & Alan Bibey, Rick Lang with James Kee, and Rick Faris.  We also heard recent music from Barry Abernathy and Dale Ann Bradley.

Thanks for joining us for this week's show!  We'll look forward to seeing you again next Sunday, 4-7PM.  In the meantime, if you'd like to check-in with a question, comment, or question, please do:  send email to bgcafe@gmail.com, or check out our Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
