"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/10/2022

Before it's time to post a playlist for tomorrow's Bluegrass Cafe, it's high time to share this playlist from last Sunday's jam-packed edition of our program.  We celebrated birthdays of two very important influences in the world of Bluegrass Music:  the late Charlie Louvin (July 7, 1927 - January 26, 2011) and mandolin legend and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Jesse McReynolds (born July 9, 1929).  We also had a nice telephone chat with Melody Williamson Keyes of Williamson Branch, who will be performing for two days at the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival.  It was a super-busy show!

Hope you were able to join us on July 10th, and we sure hope to have you join us tomorrow afternoon -- Sunday, July 17th -- from 4-7PM.

See you tomorrow!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/3/2022

For our July 3rd Bluegrass Cafe broadcast, we included a full hour's worth+ of patriotic songs performed in a Bluegrass style.  What else could you possibly expect on the day before Independence Day?

Not only did we share songs to celebrate the 246th birthday of the USA, but we also celebrated several Bluegrass birthdays, including those of Keith Whitley, Dempsey Young, Charlie Monroe, Everett Lilly, Jesse McReynolds, Peter Rowan, and Jimmy Gaudreau.

And, as always, there was a bit of newer music to share, with new or recent recordings from Irene Kelley, JR Williams, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Pam Gadd, Appalachian Road Show, Shelton & Williams, the Lost & Found, Mickey Galyean & Cullen's Bridge, Kathy Kallick, and Laura Orshaw.

Finally, we remembered in song two important historical events that took place in the early part of July:  the disappearance of the plane of Amelia Earhart (July 2, 1937) and the Battle of Gettyburg (July 1-3, 1863).

Hope you're all having a safe and happy 4th of July!  We'll look for you on the radio once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/26/2022

As we do on occasion, for this past Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we chose to spend a little bit of time spotlighting performers whose surname or band name begins with a certain letter of the alphabet.  For no particular reason, this week's spotlight letter was an "S."  To that end, we included 20+ songs from several "S" performers, including Larry Sparks, Shannon Slaughter, Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike, Special Consensus, Sister Sadie, the Larry Stephenson Band, Seldom Scene, the Spinney Brothers, and quite a few more.

We also celebrated a couple of Bluegrass birthdays, including that of the late Hall of Fame fiddler Kenny Baker (June 26, 1926 - July 8, 2011).  We also belatedly celebrated the birthday of another super-innovative banjo picker and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Eddie Adcock (born June 21, 1938).

And we remembered James Reams, a musician who was a wonderful ambassador for Bluegrass both in the northeast and the southwest.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday, but if not, you've got another chance coming up this Sunday from 4-7PM.  See you then.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/19/2022

We had ourselves an overstuffed Bluegrass Cafe on this Father's Day!  As you might expect, we included a few songs about fathers (not half as many as we could have possibly played!), plus songs performed by Bluegrass fathers and their sons and daughters.  In addition, there was a little bit of new music, and for good measure, we also celebrated the 108th birth anniversary of the one and only Lester Flatt (June 19, 1914 - May 11, 1979).  Phew!

There are lots of Bluegrass families, and we heard from several of them, including those with the last names of Amos, Armistead, Cox, Dailey, Emerson, Feinberg, Harrell, McCoury, McGee, Monroe, Mullins, Paisley, Parmley, Pike, Reno, and Stanley.

There was new or recent music, too, from Mickey Galyean & Cullen's Bridge, Blue Highway, Kathy Kallick, Junior Sisk, Unspoken Tradition, and the Gibson Brothers.

And we remembered a wonderful lady who was a steady presence and wonderful supporter of Bluegrass promoters and performers, alike:  Etta Crawford (August 20, 1942 - June 11, 2022).

Hope you dads enjoyed your Father's Day.  Please consider joining me once again one week from today from 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/12/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe playlist featured no particular plan, although we did play a good bit of newer music, along with a couple of songs about Flag Day, and four songs in honor of the 80th birthday of a true music legend, Sir Paul McCartney.

There was a whole bunch of new Bluegrass to share from long-time veterans and new performers, too.  To that end, there were new recordings from David Parmley, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, Marty Raybon, the Tim Raybon Band, Jeff Brown & Still Lonesome, Casey Penn, and Audie Blaylock.  In addition, there was music from recent recordings by Laura Orshaw, Authentic Unlimited, and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday, but if not this week, we'll look forward to having you join us for another new show this Sunday.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/5/2022

Nearly one-half of all of the songs we shared during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe were played in celebration of someone's birthday.  We also included some newer music during our three-hour program, so hope you were able to join us.

Most of the selections played during Hour #1 of Sunday's show were written and/or co-written by the late power couple of Tom T. Hall (May 25, 1936 - August 20, 2021) and Miss Dixie Hall (May 26, 1934 - January 16, 2015).  The songs they wrote together or separately are noted in green bold print on the  playlist below.  To say these two late members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame were prolific songwriters seems a bit of an understatement, and in truth, we could easily fill the whole three hours with songs written by only them.  On Sunday, we just limited ourselves to one hour.

There were lots of early June birthdays to celebrate, too, including those of Hazel Dickens, Suzanne Cox, Tony Rice, Clarence White, Charlie Cline, Jamie Dailey, and even the lead singer and main songwriter of the Statler Brothers, Don Reid.

Newer music was heard was heard, as well, from the likes of Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Laura Orshaw, Authentic Unlimited, Rick Lang, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and Peter Rowan.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday, but if not, you'll have another chance this weekend.  We'll see you at 4PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/29/2022

On this Memorial Day Sunday, we remembered in song the meaning of this somber holiday.  To that end, during this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared lots of songs that told the story of the soldier who didn't make it home.

We also celebrated the birthdays of several Bluegrass folks born on May 29th, including the late Earl Pike, Stephen Mougin, and my brother, Dave "Tex" Orlomoski.  In addition, we remembered the May 23rd birth anniversary of Country and Bluegrass Hall of Fame member, Mac Wiseman.  And we shared just a couple of songs written by the late powerhouse couple of Tom T. Hall (May 25, 1936 - August 20, 2021) and Miss Dixie Hall (May 26, 1934 - January 16, 2015).  During next week's broadcast, we'll share more songs from the Halls.

And, of course, there was a bit of newer music, from brand-new recordings by Authentic Unlimited, Jim Hurst, Circus No. 9, Jesse Smathers, Laura Orshaw, and the Gibson Brothers.

Thank you for tuning in today, and we'll look forward to joining you once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/22/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was my first live radio show back in the studio since May 1st, so I was glad to be back!  There was a lot of wonderful music to share, so hope you could join us.

We included a set of songs featuring the late Keith Whitley, who was just recently announced as one of the 2022 inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame.  We also remembered three members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame who were all born on May 17th:  fiddler Paul Warren (May 17, 1918 - January 12, 1978), Red Smiley (May 17, 1924 - January 2, 1972), and Rodney Dillard of The Dillards (born May 17, 1942).

Other birthday celebrants we missed during our two weeks away included the joint birthday of both members of a great brother-style act of the 1940s and 1950s:  Johnnie & Jack.  These two brothers-in-law were both born on May 13th -- Johnnie Wright in 1914 and Jack Anglin in 1916.  Though these two were not a Bluegrass act, a lot of their music certainly was "Bluegrass friendly."

And we shared music from the wonderful Danny Paisley, who announced this past week that he will begin treatment for what the doctors say is a very treatable form of throat cancer on June 1st.  A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Danny with some of his expenses, especially given that he will be missing lots of gigs during his treatment and recovery time.  If you would like to contribute to this fundraising effort, please do.

And there was new music to share, too, this time from the two promising new bands:  the Tennessee Bluegrass Band and Authentic Unlimited, as well as Jaelee Roberts, the Po' Ramblin Boys, the Lizzy Roy & Lizzy Show, Darren Beachley, and Laura Orshaw.

Hope you'll consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/2/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our first for the marvelous month of May, so to celebrate -- in a weird kind of way -- we spent our first hour playing music from performers whose band name or surname began with the letter "M."  There's no doubt that we could have spent the full three hours with just "M" performer music, but we limited ourselves to just one hour.  Among the most notable Bluegrass "M"s was music from Bluegrass Hall of Famers Lynn Morris, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Jimmy Martin, and, of course, Bill Monroe.

We also belatedly celebrated the April 29th birthday of the Red-Headed Stranger, Willie Nelson (born April 29, 1933), as well as the April 30th birthdays of Bluegrassers Bill Yates and Rob McCoury.

New music was part of the mix, too, with new or recent selections from Kathy Kallick (with Molly Tuttle), Tray Wellington, Peter Rowan, the Gibson Brothers, Shannon Slaughter, and the Little Roy and Lizzy Show.

May 8th is Commencement Day at the University of Connecticut -- the first big graduation ceremonies to be held on the UConn campus since 2019.  This is great for students, but not so great for folks who volunteer to do a radio show and drive on campus on Sunday afternoons.  To that end, the plan for our May 8th broadcast (at this time) is that Sunday's program will be an encore show from Mother's Day in 2021.  Hope you can join us.

Have a great week!

Amy O.
