"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/30/2022

I'm very delinquent in getting this playlist posted for our last Bluegrass Cafe in January, but better late than never...

The first part of Sunday's show featured several songs in honor of four important members of the Bluegrass community who were all born on February 1st.  Chronologically, they are Del McCoury (1939), Tom Gray (1941), David Parmley (1959), and Jason Carter (1973).  In addition, we remembered the January 31st birthdays of Becky Buller (born 1979) and Lynwood Lunsford (1962).

We also included a little bit of brand-new music from the likes of the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Magnolia Drive, and Junior Sisk.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/23/2022

It's January 23rd and it's dang cold.  That's hardly a shocking announcement, but as the temperatures have been slightly colder than normal this January, we thought that was a good "theme" for the first hour of this week's home-recorded Bluegrass Cafe.  We shared all sorts of "cold" songs, so maybe next week, we'll have to look for some "hot" songs to balance things out?  We shall see...

We are recording both this week's edition of our program and next week's, too, as the UConn campus is currently on a higher COVID precaution level of operation, so that means there will be no in-person broadcasting until at least the first week of February.  We're just glad to have a way of recording at home for you, as who wants to go a week without Bluegrass?  :)  

This day's program also included a couple of newer selections from forthcoming or recently-released recordings by Kristy Cox, Larry Cordle, the duo of Dale Ann Bradley & Danny Paisley, a song from the forthcoming CD by New Hampshire songwriter Rick Lang.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/16/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe included lots of birthday music, a Bluegrass farewell to a top-notch country music songwriter, and even a new duet from two of the finest voices in Bluegrass music.  Hope you were able to join us for all or part of the program.

We started and finished the show with songs from the prolific pen of an American original:  Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  As Dolly has dabbled in Bluegrass music for years, we even included some of her singing, as well.

On Friday, January 14, 2022, the music world lost a wonderful member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame:  Dallas Frazier.  Originally, my plan was to play a couple of Mr. Frazier's tunes that had been covered in the Bluegrass world, but as I made a list of some of his songs, I realized there were far more than 2 or 3 really good ones to share.  Instead, we put together a set of a dozen songs either written or co-written by Dallas Frazier, and all of them were wonderful.  Rest in peace, Dallas Frazier.

We couldn't let the show pass without remembering a few January birthdays, two of which were of founding members of the Country Gentlemen (Bill Emerson born January 22nd and Charlie Waller born January 19th).  And there was a song in honor of Tony Trischka, who celebrates his birthday on January 16th.

And if that wasn't enough, there is a new duet record by Dale Ann Bradley and Danny Paisley.  Yay!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/2/2022

Happy New Year!  The first Bluegrass Cafe to hit the airwaves in 2022 was actually a "home-made" show recorded in the last hours of 2021 and completed shortly after the new year had arrived.  Our goal for 2022 is to provide more live presentations of our show than recorded ones, but we'll do what we need to do to get through this ongoing pandemic.

We spent the first portion of our show remembering several of the many Bluegrass performers who died during 2021, with special focus on the great J.D. Crowe (August 27, 1937 - December 24, 2021).  We are grateful for the many talents of those no longer with us, and we'll continue to share their music during our program in the weeks and months ahead.

And, as we often feature during our first broadcasts of the year, we couldn't forget the music of the legendary Hank Williams (September 17, 1927 - January 1, 1953).

Warmest wishes to you for a happy and healthy 2022, and we'll look forward to seeing you again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/26/2021

For our last Bluegrass Cafe of 2021, we shared songs of the season, as well as a few Bluegrass favorites of the year, and a few songs in honor of some late December birthday celebrants.  Hope you had a great Christmas.

Our program for this week was recorded at home on December 21st, several days before we learned of the Christmas Eve passing of the legendary banjo player and band leader, J.D. Crowe.  Our program for the first Sunday of 2022 will include a tribute to this Bluegrass Hall of Famer, as well as a remembrance of several of the other Bluegrass performers and legends that were lost during 2021.  At this point, we are unsure if that show will be a home-made one or a live edition, but either way, sure hope you will consider joining us.

"Classic Country Christmas" encore - 12/18/2021

It's that time again...Christmas!!  What a year we've had, eh?  Hope you all are doing well and getting ready to celebrate the big day in whatever way you like.

As the UConn campus is closed on Sundays for the next few weeks, and our building access is not quite settled for those closed times, we will be returning to "home recording" for the time being.  Time will tell how long this will last.  In the meantime, our December 18th broadcast was devoted to a re-airing of three "Classic Country Christmas" hours I produced at home in December 2020.  Hope you enjoyed them!  

This coming Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe will be recorded either this evening or Wednesday evening, but it should be fresh for your listening on Boxing Day -- Sunday, December 26th -- from 4-7PM.

Every year, I love to play some of my favorite country Christmas music during our Bluegrass Cafe "Christmas Extravaganza."  This year, though, I didn't have to limit myself to playing just a couple of country Christmas songs mixed in at the Bluegrass Cafe, as some gaps in our WHUS broadcast schedule (plus, home recording) allowed me to record three separate one-hour programs featuring (mostly) nothing but classic country Christmas music.  WHUS has aired these shows a few times over the past few days, so hope the songs added a bit of joy to some Christmas celebrations.  

As for the songs I chose to play this year, there were selections from lots of favorite Christmas recordings of my childhood, as well as a few "newer" tunes (newest from 1993), and even more songs recorded many years before I was born.  It was a fun mix.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/12/2021

For Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared birthday music, as well as tunes from 2021 recordings and lots of classic favorites.  As we get closer to the holiday, we also added more Christmas music into the mix, including a few new Christmas tunes introduced in 2021 from Jerry Salley & Family, Becky Buller, and Williamson Branch.  During next Sunday's program -- the last before December 25th -- we'll likely play all Christmas music.  Hope you can join us!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/5/2021

This past Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe began with music written by, performed by, and written about one of the most cherished voices in the history of Bluegrass music, the late Carter Stanley (August 27, 1925 - December 1, 1966).  While the elder guitar-playing Stanley brother has been gone for a greater number of years than he was alive, his music and his legacy continue to grow.  

Our show also included a few cover songs in tribute to the late Stonewall Jackson (the honky tonk singer and long-time Grand Ole Opry member, as opposed to the Civil War General) who passed on December 4th at the age of 89.

There were a couple of newer songs to share, too, including brand-new Christmas music from the pen of Rick Lang, as well as a new seasonal song from Tammy Rogers & Thomm Jutz.  In addition, there was newer non-Christmas music from Valerie Smith, Volume Five, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, and James Reams.
