"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/6/2026

Today's broadcast of our Bluegrass Cafe was both abbreviated and expanded at the same time.  As UConn Men's Soccer action took over the WHUS airwaves starting at 5PM, we opted to start the show an hour earlier at 3PM.  We had a lot of ground to cover this week, so didn't want to try to squeeze it all into one hour.

It's a holiday weekend, so the show started with several songs centering on the theme of "working" or "labor."  Hope everyone is enjoying the last unofficial weekend of summer!

I wasn't in the studio last week to do a live version of our program, so I wasn't able to pay tribute to the wonderful Dolly Parton (January 19, 1946 - August 25, 2026).  We've long celebrated Dolly during our Bluegrass Cafe, as she was many things, as we know.  If Dolly had never sung a note or written a song, we would still know her from her many charitable contributions to the world.  Fortunately for us, though, Dolly was an incredible songwriter who wrote many songs that have been covered by many Bluegrass performers over the years.  In her later years, Dolly successfully recorded several Bluegrass-themed records, and often appeared as a guest vocalist with various performers.  We will spotlight some of her guest vocalist recordings in a future Bluegrass Cafe.  Dolly will be missed forever, but what a legacy she left for all!

We hope to join you for a full three-hour Bluegrass Cafe next week.  Have a wonderful week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/26/2025

During part of Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we spent some time belatedly celebrating the January 19th birthdays of two very important figures in the world of Bluegrass:  both the late Bluegrass Hall of Famer Charlie Waller (January 19, 1935 - August 18, 2004), and the always-important Bluegrass influencer, Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  No better way than to celebrate these folks than with lots of their music, and so, that is what we did.

We also remembered
Buck White, who died on January 13th at the age of 94.  This patriarch of the Whites (a band formerly known as Buck White & the Down Home Folks) was a staple at the Grand Ole Opry for 40+ years, and carried on the tradition of great family bands in country music for many decades.  Buck will be missed, but his influence lives on through his daughters (and musical partners), Sharon White Skaggs and Cheryl White Jones.

The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) held their 50th annual convention and awards show this past weekend, and we shared music from some of the big fan-voted winners, including the Kody Norris Show, Rhonda Vincent, Junior Sisk, and Authentic Unlimited.  For a complete list of the 2025 winners, check out this link from Bluegrass Today.

We even had time for a bit of brand-new music during our show, too, this time coming from Laura Orshaw (with the Slocan Ramblers), Larry Cordle, Becky Buller, and Nick Chandler & Delivered.

Hope you're having a good week.  We'll look forward to visiting with you on the radio once again this coming Sunday when Bluegrass Cafe returns from 4-7PM.

See you then!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/21/2023

Mid-January is prime time to celebrate some important Bluegrass birthdays, so that was our primary focus during this day's Bluegrass Cafe.

We remembered the January 19th birthdays of several folks, most notably those of Bluegrass Hall of Famer Charlie Waller (January 19, 1935 - August 8, 2004) and Queen of the World Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  Charlie's nearly 50 years as the lead singer/guitarist of the Country Gentlemen were filled with songs that have become Bluegrass standards.  And while Dolly has recorded a couple of what she marketed as "Bluegrass" albums, the fact remains that Dolly is a top-notch songwriter and many of her songs have been covered in the world of Bluegrass.  We also shared many songs in honor of Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo picker, Bill Emerson (January 22, 1938 - August 21, 2021), whose career included being a founding member of the Country Gentlemen, a stint with Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys, partnerships with Cliff Waldron and Pete Goble, and as a bandleader with his own Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie.  Great music.

There were quite a few new songs to share today from performers like Authentic Unlimited, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Jerry Salley, Missy Raines, and a new band called Wood Box Heroes.

Thanks for listening!  Hope you will be sure to join us next Sunday afternoon for our Bluegrass Cafe -- 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/16/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe included lots of birthday music, a Bluegrass farewell to a top-notch country music songwriter, and even a new duet from two of the finest voices in Bluegrass music.  Hope you were able to join us for all or part of the program.

We started and finished the show with songs from the prolific pen of an American original:  Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  As Dolly has dabbled in Bluegrass music for years, we even included some of her singing, as well.

On Friday, January 14, 2022, the music world lost a wonderful member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame:  Dallas Frazier.  Originally, my plan was to play a couple of Mr. Frazier's tunes that had been covered in the Bluegrass world, but as I made a list of some of his songs, I realized there were far more than 2 or 3 really good ones to share.  Instead, we put together a set of a dozen songs either written or co-written by Dallas Frazier, and all of them were wonderful.  Rest in peace, Dallas Frazier.

We couldn't let the show pass without remembering a few January birthdays, two of which were of founding members of the Country Gentlemen (Bill Emerson born January 22nd and Charlie Waller born January 19th).  And there was a song in honor of Tony Trischka, who celebrates his birthday on January 16th.

And if that wasn't enough, there is a new duet record by Dale Ann Bradley and Danny Paisley.  Yay!

Hope you were able to tune in to the show, but if not, we sure hope you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/17/2021

Our Bluegrass Cafe on this day was mainly one to celebrate birthdays, and there were a passel of them!  Those celebrating birthdays included Bluegrass Hall of Famers Charlie Waller and Bill Emerson, as well as Country Music Hall of Famers Dolly Parton and Phil Everly, and West Virginia Hall of Famer Walter Bailes.  If you celebrate your birthday in mid-January, Happy Birthday wishes to you, too!

Last week, we received in the mail a big box of CDs that have been sent to to the WHUS studios since mid-March 2020.  We're working our way through some of those CDs now, and trying to play catch-up.  On this broadcast, we shared two songs each from four CDs that had been sent to WHUS last year, but that had received limited airplay during our "home-made" COVID shows:  "My Best Friend" by Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition (Patuxent Music); "Ronnie Bowman" by Ronnie Bowman (Engelhardt Music Group); "Fiddler's Pastime" by Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (Self-Produced); and "Bridges And Backroads" by Jerry Salley (Very Jerry Records).  We'll check out a few more 2020 CDs in future weeks of our continued home-produced program.

This week's show also included three new recordings for 2021 from the likes of Williamson Branch, Carolyn Eyerly, and Chris Jones & the Night Drivers.

Thanks, as always, for listening, and be sure to check in with a request or comment, if you're so inclined.  Email can be sent to bgcafe@gmail.com and our Facebook page can be found at www.Facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Have a good week, and stay healthy!
