"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/12/2023

Before a new week begins, it's time to share last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe playlist.  During this show, we shared several songs from Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway (who brought her tour to the UConn campus the previous evening with a fine show at the Jorgensen Auditorium), as well as a couple of songs honoring veterans, and a whole bunch of songs from performers whose band name or last name began with the letter "N."  In addition, there was new or recent music from the likes of Amanda Cook, Cory Walker, Williamson Branch, David Parmley, the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, the Kathy Kallick Band, the Seldom Scene, Jim Lauderdale & the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Appalachian Roadshow, Kristen Bearfield & Brooke Aldridge, High Fidelity, and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.

Thanks for listening, and we hope to be with you tomorrow from 4-7PM.  Join us, if you can!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/22/2023

Before we begin our new show at 4PM today, here's the playlist from last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  We shared some newer music, a few classic favorites, and remembered a very special entertainer from New York who was a fixture on the New England and Northeast music scene for many, many years:  Walter "Smokey" Greene (August 10, 1930 - October 19, 2023).  Smokey was the rare singer who performed (generally) by himself with his guitar, and played and sung a steady repertoire of heart-tugging ballads followed by laugh-out-loud novelty tunes.  What an incredible performer!  He will be missed.

Please consider joining us on Sunday afternoon for this week's show.  We'll see you at 4PM!

See you soon!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/15/2023

Sunday's show was a fun one and very full!  We paid tribute to the late Buck Trent (February 17, 1938 - October 9, 2023), shared a bunch of new music, and at the midway point in our program, we enjoyed a nice telephone visit with Jeremy & Corrina Rose Logston Stephens of High Fidelity.

If you've listened to our
Bluegrass Cafe in recent weeks, you know that High Fidelity has a brand-new gospel recording called "Music In My Soul."  This is their third release for Rebel Records, and it is a dandy.  We talked about the band, the CD, and shared that High Fidelity will be one of the featured bands at the 2024 edition of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival ~ August 8-11, 2024.  The full Podunk lineup has not yet been announced, but be sure to mark your calendars and check out High Fidelity (and the whole festival) on Friday, August 9, 2024.  And if you'd like to know more about the band and their traditional Bluegrass sound, please visit their website:  www.highfidelitybluegrass.com

New music was part of the show, too.  To that end, we enjoyed new (or recent) music from Bobby Osborne & C.J. Lewandowski, Balsam Range, the Kathy Kallick Band, Sister Sadie, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, and Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway.

As always, thanks for listening to the show.  We hope you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/8/2023

While driving to UConn on Sunday afternoon to present our Bluegrass Cafe, I had to figure out what music to play during the program.  I knew I had new songs to share from both Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, but what else to play?  As we hadn't done it in a while, we pulled out the "Spotlight Letter of the Week" feature and shared songs from performers with a last name or band name that began with the letter "O" or the letter "P" (clearing the way to play lots of music from Bobby & Sonny -- the Osborne Brothers).

In addition to the new music from 3TO and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, we also shared 2023 releases from the Henhouse Prowlers, Full Cord, Darren Beachley & Caleb Bailey, Rhonda Vincent, the Kody Norris Show, the Dan Tyminski Band, East Nash Grass, Nothin' Fancy, Greg Blake, Rebekah Speer, & Jeff Brown, and High Fidelity.

Hope you enjoyed our program for this week.  Be sure to join us once more next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM!

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/1/2023

Before our next edition of Bluegrass Cafe airs tomorrow (4-7PM), it 's high time to get the playlist posted from our October 1st edition of this program!  We shared music from several of the big winners of IBMA Awards on September 28th, including Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Special Consensus, Greg Blake, Jason Carter, Authentic Unlimited, and Entertainer of the Year, Billy Strings).  We also included a couple of songs each from the three new members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Wilma Lee Cooper, Sam Bush, and David Grisman.

We also took a few moments to remember the delightful Mark Wayne Kitchin ~ someone who was not only a noted country music DJ in eastern Connecticut for 30+ years, but also a Bluegrass bass player who made a record in the mid-1960s with some friends:  Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings & the Twin River Boys.  In addition, he also played a bit with Shady Creek in the 1990s. On a personal note, Mark was a radio mentor of mine for several years, and an all-around good guy who will be greatly missed.  Read his obituary here.  Rest in peace, Mark.

The next edition of our Bluegrass Cafe comes tomorrow afternoon at 4PM.  Hope you'll consider joining me.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/24/2023

Just as we honored Hank Williams on what would have been his 100th birthday on September 17th, on this past Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we remembered the King of Country Music, Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992).  Mr. Acuff was definitely not a Bluegrass performer, but, like the music of Hank Williams, a whole lot of Roy Acuff's songs have been covered by Bluegrass performers over the years.  We shared a dozen songs written, performed, or made famous by Roy Acuff over the course of our three hour program.  Hope you enjoyed them.

New music is part of our programming most weeks, and during Sunday's show we shared some new music from the Henhouse Prowlers, as well as Nothin' Fancy and Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road.  We also shared recent music from the Kody Norris Show, the Tim Raybon Band, East Nash Grass, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Jason Barie, and High Fidelity.

We also brought along several LPs to share this week, including the Osborne Brothers ("Up This Hill And Down"), J.D. Crowe & the New South ("You Can Share My Blanket"), Lester Flatt & Mac Wiseman ("Lester 'n' Mac"), Fred Pike ("Fred Pike And The Flat-Top Guitar"), and the Country Gentlemen ("Live From The Stage Of The Roanoke Bluegrass Festival").

Hope you enjoyed the show.  Please consider joining me once again this Sunday for another visit in our Bluegrass Cafe, won't you?

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/17/2023

On the 100th birthday anniversary of the one and only Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953), we couldn't help but pay tribute to the
man and his music during a good portion of our
Bluegrass Cafe.  We included both covers of songs Hank recorded and music from the man, himself.  Seventy years after his passing, the music world is still feeling the impact of Hank's troubled, short, very musical life...and we will forever be grateful.

Need to read more about Hank?  As promised, here are a few book options:

Escott, Colin.  Hank Williams:  The Biography.  (Little, Brown & Co., 1994)

Hemphill, Paul.  Lovesick Blues:  The Life Of Hank Williams.  (Viking, 2005)

Ribowsky, Mark.  Hank:  The Short Life And Long Country Road Of Hank Williams.  (Liveright, 2017)

There were a few songs that weren't from Hank's songbook, though.  To that end, we shared newer music from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Alan Munde, Greg Blake & Hometown, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Authentic Unlimited, East Nash Grass, Rock Hearts, Special Consensus, and High Fidelity.

Enjoy the week, and we'll look for you once again on Sunday at 7PM for our next Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/10/2023

After two weeks of missed broadcasts, I had a lot of ground to cover during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  We had birth anniversaries of three Bluegrass legends to celebrate, it was Grandparents Day, and we had a whole lot of brand-new music to share.  It was a show filled with lots of great music -- hope you were able to join us!

Probably 3/4 of the songs that made up Sunday's playlist were from the song catalogs of Carter Stanley (August 27, 1925 - December 1, 1966), J.D. Crowe (August 27, 1937 - December 24, 2021), and, of course, that of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe (September 13, 1911 - September 9, 1996).

And there was lots of new music to share, too.  In addition to two songs from the soon-to-be-released gospel recording from High Fidelity ("Music In My Soul"), we heard selections from Full Cord, the Tim Raybon Band, Donna Ulisse, the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Robert Hale, Cory Walker, and Kelley John Gibson.  We also played a couple of songs from the brand-new recording from Connecticut band, Audrey Mae.

We'll look forward to having you dine us once again next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a great week!

Amy O.
