"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/12/2023

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/8/2020

Thank you, Veterans!

What a gorgeous November Sunday!  Not sure where you might be, but we've been enjoying some record-breaking warm temperatures and sunny skies here in eastern Connecticut this weekend, so hope you as fortunate.  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe found us "trucking" through another pre-recorded show filled with songs about soldiers in honor of Veterans Day coming up on November 11th, as well as a few newer selections for 2020, and a couple of Bluegrass classics, as well.  Hope you were able to join us!

Even though 2020 has really been a miserable year to see and hear "live" Bluegrass, there still have been a number of really fine new recordings released over the past few months.  We shared songs from a few of those during this show, including selections from Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Merle Monroe, the Feinberg Brothers, Junior Sisk, High Fidelity, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, FastTrack, and Balsam Range.

For those who might be interested in knowing more about a November 22nd "live" show from Nova Scotia's Spinney Brothers, here's what I know:  this concert will take place "live" on the YouTube page of Canadian folk singer, J.P. Cormier (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=j.p.+cormier).  The show will take place on Sunday, November 22nd at 7PM Atlantic (6PM Eastern).  There will be a virtual "tip jar" set up, should you care to watch the Spinneys' show.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 11/8/2009 Veteran's Day

Hi Folks,

I like to remember our veteran's every year near Veteran's Day by playing songs related to military service, so I devoted a little more than an hour of this show to bluegrass and string band music about soldiers from at least the mid-19th century all the way to today.

Newer music was featured from Southern Rail, Bear Minimum, O'Reilly/Miller/Lester from the North To Ontario 2009 CD, The Steep Canyon Rangers, Grasstowne, The Anita Fisher Band with Ray Deaton, The Dixie Bee-Liners, The Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush, Adam Steffey, Ricky Skaggs, and Larry Sparks.

From the Heritage Corner vaults I featured a couple of really interesting tracks from Cullen Galyean, one of which was on a Folkways LP from 1983 with Bobby Harrison, and the other Cullen's winning banjo performance at the world's first multi-day bluegrass festival in Fincastle, VA, in 1965 that is on the new CD "Born Into Bluegrass - The Songs of Cullen Galyean." We also featured historic cuts from The Lilly Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, and Charlie Monroe.

We were surprised and delighted to get a call from Mr. Bud Godreau -- the former WHUS DJ who started bluegrass programming at WHUS over 27 years ago! Bud lives in North Carolina these days (how fitting!) and was visiting friends in the Northeast when he checked in with us, so we put Bud on the air to say hello to our listeners, all of whom owe Bud thanks for getting this great music started on radio in our neck of the Southern New England woods. Marti and I did this show just after the Veterans Day version of Red Rooster Party, so we continued the theme on Bluegrass Cafe by interspersing songs related to veterans throughout the show.
