"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/13/2017

Our radio program is one that generally plays only Bluegrass music, although we have been known to throw in an occasional country song rendered by a performer of classic country music (i.e. a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame).  During Sunday's show, we celebrated the August 12th birthdays of two classic country performers, we remembered the passing of a third Hall of Famer, shared a bit of Podunk music, and, of course, threw in a selection or two from some brand-new Bluegrass recordings.

The August 12th birthdays belonged to Porter Wagoner (August 12, 1927 - October 28, 2007) and Buck Owens (August 12, 1929 - March 25, 2006).  Both of these Hall of Famers recorded many songs which have been covered in the Bluegrass World, so it's nearly impossible to even consider missing their birthdays by not sharing a whole mess of songs from their respective song catalogs.  We even included a couple of songs each from both Porter and Buck, too.  And, as an added "bonus," one song ("Cajun Fiddle") featured Buck's right hand man, Don Rich (August 15, 1941 - July 17, 1974) on the fiddle.  

We also couldn't let the week pass without sharing some music from another Hall of Famer who died this past week:  Glen Campbell (April 22, 1936 - August 8, 2017).  Not quite as many of Campbell's 1960s/1970s pop-country tunes have been covered by Bluegrass performers (that I know of, anyway), but there were a couple that made Sunday's playlist.

We included a short set of songs from some of the Friday and Saturday Podunk performers, including the Gibson Brothers, Becky Buller, David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition, and Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike.  A bit of new music was included today, too, from the likes of the Kevin Prater Band, Jerry Salley, and the Misty Rose Band.
