So...what to do with that extra hour? This week, I felt the need to play a bit of classic country music. Originally, I had intended to play a variety of performers, but this week, the focus fell pretty much on one Clarence Eugene (Hank) Snow, who was born on May 9, 1914. Many of Hank Snow's tunes have been recorded by BG performers through the years, so it wasn't really much of a stretch to play three covers of Hank's tunes, plus two of Hank's own tunes. Something we were playing during this hour must have appealed to listeners, though, as the phone was very busy. We even had one person who was a trucker passing through CT on Interstate 395 call in and ask to hear, "Tennessee Stud." How convenient that the next caller wanted to hear Johnny Cash, as we were able to combine the two requests...
Once we got into the "official" time for the BG Cafe, we stayed with straight BG tunes.
For many years, I will admit that Lynn Morris was my favorite female singer of BG music. Sadly, since suffering a stroke in the Spring of 2003, Lynn hasn't really been able to play music on a regular basis, as she has some difficulty remembering lyrics. Consequently, Lynn Morris doesn't really play music on stage anymore (although she did play one set at the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in 2007, as you can see in this photo). However, today, Lynn Morris was scheduled to take the stage at a BG festival in Winchester, VA with her husband, Marshall Wilborn, and other former members of the Lynn Morris Band (Jesse Brock, Tom Adams, Ron Stewart). I have no doubt that Lynn had a large number of folks pulling for her in the audience today. There's a great profile article which was published in the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper on April 30th. Read it by clicking here.
Last week, Jim put together a great tribute set to Hazel Dickens, who died on April 22nd. This week, I wanted to continue that tribute a bit, so I put together a few tunes recorded by others (including Lynn Morris, Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, the Johnson Mountain Boys, Laurie Lewis, & Springfield Exit) which came directly from the pen of Hazel Dickens. This amazing lady wrote so much great music through the years that you'll continue to hear it for a good long while, without a doubt -- and that's the way it should be.
New music continues to be a big part of our playlist at BG Cafe, as well, and there is just a surplus of it these days. On the show this week, we played new or newer recordings from the likes of Tom Mindte & Jeremy Stephens, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Bill Emerson, Tony Holt & the Wildwood Valley Boys, Ashlee Blankenship & Blades Of Blue, Steve Spurgin, NewFound Road, Shannon Slaughter, Terry Baucom, and James Reams & the Barnstormers.
Hope you enjoyed something you heard on today's BG Cafe, and that you'll be sure to join Jim on next week's edition of the show...
