"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/24/2022

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we spent the first hour playing music that was recorded live at various festivals and venues around the world.  Our show also included a bit of newer music and a couple of tunes in honor of a New England Bluegrass pioneer who recently passed.  Hope you were able to join us.

Among the newer selections we heard music from the Gibson Brothers, the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Laura Orshaw, Carly Arrowood, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Fast Track, Dale Ann Bradley with Danny Paisley, the Special Consensus, and Junior Sisk.

We also shared a couple of songs from a New Hampshire Bluegrass fiddler who was an original member of White Mountain Bluegrass, Joe Pomerleau, who died at the age of 89 on April 23rd.  Rest in peace.

Hope you're able to join us for the next edition of our Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/17/2022 ~ an Easter encore!

Happy Easter!

On this blessed day, I decided to stay home and share an "encore" presentation of our Bluegrass Cafe that originally aired on April 4, 2021.  This show was full of music appropriate for an Easter Sunday, as well as a mini-spotlight on the then-new recording, "Industrial Strength Bluegrass:  Southwestern Ohio's Bluegrass Legacy."  This show also featured lots of music from New Hampshire's own White Mountain Bluegrass, as we remembered and celebrated the life of the late Hazel McGee (April 2, 1941 - October 27, 2014).

We'll be back with a live presentation of our Bluegrass Cafe next week.  Sure hope you'll make plans to join us on Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/9/2022

This day's Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole lot of music in celebration of the late Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) -- not a Bluegrass singer by any stretch, but his songs have certainly been covered in the Bluegrass world many multiples of times over the years.  Limiting ourselves to just a dozen Merle Haggard selections and covers is a bit of a struggle, but since we had so many other great songs and performers to share, we did what we needed to do.

As far as newer music, there were selections from the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Rhonda Vincent, the Rick Lang project featuring a song by Stephen Mougin, and the Po' Ramblin' Boys.

Next Sunday's show may be an encore presentation of last year's Easter show, but the jury is still out on that.  We'll keep you posted.

Thanks for listening.  Have a great week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/3/2022

It's a new month for our Bluegrass Cafe -- no fooling!

The main focus for today's program was remembering the wonderful Roland White -- a Bluegrass Hall of Famer who has been an important part of many bands, from working with his brothers in the Kentucky Colonels to being a sideman with both Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt to spending 10+ years with both the Country Gazette and the Nashville Bluegrass Band to fronting his own band.  By all accounts, Roland White was a very kind man, and super-encouraging to many performers who would come after him.  He will be missed, but we will always have his legacy and 60+ years of music.  Coming up in June 2022, the University of Illinois Press is scheduled to release Mandolin Man:  The Bluegrass Life Of Roland White by Bob Black.  It should be a great read about a life well-lived.

In addition, we shared a bit of newer music from a recording featuring a guitarist by the name of Bob Minner.  We also included new or recent music from the Del McCoury Band, Shannon Slaughter, Laura Orshaw, Volume Five, Authentic Unlimited, Special Consensus, and Rick Lang.

Next Sunday's show will start a bit later than 4PM, as there will be a UConn Baseball game until approximately 4:30PM.  Please join me then.

Thanks, and have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlst - 3/27/2022

"New" was the word for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  Mind you, we didn't share only the newest Bluegrass music in existence, but it seems like this was the week for several performers to release music -- new bands, Grammy-nominated bands, older bands with new configurations -- no matter, as all of it was pretty top-notch, and gives us something to look forward to for the future Bluegrass in 2022.  This brand-new music came to us from the likes of a new group called Authentic Unlimited, the new configuration of Special Consensus, Woody Platt (minus his Steep Canyon Rangers bandmates), the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and more.   Hope you enjoyed it.

We also opened the phone lines for requests, and surprisingly, I was able to go 3/3, with requests for music from Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys, Ralph Stanley with Dwight Yoakam, and even a Bluegrass-sounding tune from Marty Robbins.  You just never know what folks are going to want to hear.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday.  If you couldn't tune in, there's always next week.  We'll be looking for you from 4-7PM on Sunday afternoon.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/20/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was two weeks in the making, as we took the battle plan for our March 13th show (in which we couldn't get into the Student Union to do any broadcasting) and added a couple of things.  The show included a couple of "Spring" songs, March birthday celebrating and a few new selections, too.  Hope you were able to join us.

As far as the birthdays go, we celebrated the mid-March birthdays of several Bluegrassers, including Bob Paisley, Kristin Scott Benson, Tim O'Brien, Ronnie McCoury, David Grisman, and John Starling.  In addition, there was a second short set of songs written by the wonderful Marshall Wilborn (born March 12, 1952).

Two important members of the Country Music Hall of Fame were celebrated, too:  Carl Smith (March 15, 1927 - January 16, 2010) and Charley Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020).  We heard from both of these legends, as well as several Bluegrass covers of some of their material.

And finally, there was some newer music, too.  This time around, we heard new selections from Laura Orshaw (with Trey Hensley), Donna Ulisse, and the Del McCoury Band.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/13/2022

So, it seems there was a little issue getting into the Student Union at UConn today ~ the building was locked up tight as the UConn students are enjoying their Spring Break this week.  Unfortunately, those of us who are not students didn't get the message, and so, we weren't able to get inside the building.  These things (unfortunately) seem to happen every now and then.  Fortunately, though, in the absence of a "live" show, today's broadcast was a COVID-era recording that originally aired on February 28, 2021.  Hope you enjoyed a revisit.  :)

Hope to be back inside the WHUS studios broadcasting next week.  Until then, have a fine week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/6/2022

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured something that I haven't done in over two years -- a bona fide, live-as-it's-happening telephone interview!  Our interviewee was the delightful Michelle Canning, who told us all about the things she's been doing (writing songs like crazy!) and also, about her upcoming virtual event to benefit the Alzheimer's Foundation of America:  A Night On The Edge.  For more information about the event and all of the other things Michelle is doing, visit Michelle's website (https://michellecanning.net).

The songs we played also included birthday selections in honor of two Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo players who were both born on March 6th:  Don Stover (1928) and Doug Dillard (1937).  Other birthday music celebrated Norman Blake, Rickie Simpkins, Cia Cherryholmes, and the first part of a two-show selection of songs written by the great Marshall Wilborn.

And we remembered Mac Martin, who died on February 28th at the age of 96.  Mr. Martin was a fine purveyor of traditional Bluegrass music in the Pittsburgh, PA area for over 70 years.  Amazing.

We'll look for you once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  Hope you have a fine week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/27/2022

In the days before COVID, it seemed like WHUS used to air every single UConn Basketball game that was played, but today, things are not the same.  While we may not experience sports-shortened radio broadcasts so much these days, we still have to deal with the traffic and parking issues that occur on game days when the basketball teams are playing on campus.  Today was one of those days, but COVID has actually provided us with a "fix," of sorts:  we can give recorded shows an "encore" appearance once in a while.  For this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we were both recorded and live:  the first hour was a broadcast first aired on February 28, 2021, and the second two hours were "warts and all" live broadcasts from WHUS.  Hope you enjoyed this "hybrid."

During the show, we celebrated birth anniversaries of two wonderful, very original performers: Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 - May 29, 2012) and John Duffey (March 4, 1934 - December 9, 1997).  There's no better way to celebrate a musician than by sharing his music, and so, we did.  And we could have celebrated a lot more, too, but we'll save that for another Sunday.

New music hit our airwaves today, as well, with brand-new music from the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Rick Lang's new stories-in-song collection, Unlimited Tradition, the Lonesome River Band, Kristy Cox, and Cedar Hill.

Hope you were able to join us, but if not, you'll have another chance in one week.  See you on March 7th!

Have a good week!

Amy O.
